“I never meant to hurt you,” he said, knowing how hollow the words sounded.
Vanitha turned to face him fully, her eyes bright with unshed tears. “But you did hurt me. You’ve been hurting me for months. And the worst part?” She laughed again, a broken sound. “I think I felt it all along. I just didn’t want to see it or admit it.”

The question hung between them, heavy with implication. Ashok’s expression shifted, a shadow passing across his features.
“It’s upto you ,” he said carefully. “But I won’t go near her, as long as you are with me.”
“If I am not with you?”
He squeezed her and said “You know what I mean. I’ll never go to her.”
“But what about your feelings for her?” Vanitha pressed, her hands still resting on his chest. “You can’t just turn those off.”
Ashok sighed, his shoulders dropping slightly. “No,” he agreed. “But I can choose where to direct them.” He cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs tracing the line of her cheekbones. “I chose you, Vanitha. I’ve always chosen you.”
Vanitha’s eyes filled with tears. “Even when you were with her?”
“Especially then,” Ashok said softly. “Every time I was with her, I was thinking of you. Comparing her to you. Wishing it was you.”
Vanitha’s breath hitched. The admission should have hurt, but instead, it sparked something in her chest... a flicker of hope, perhaps, or the beginning of understanding.
