Chapter 48— Closed Doors

The conference room was dim now.

Most of the office had already left.

Music from the party had faded into a distant memory, replaced by the hum of the air conditioner and the soft echo of footsteps that were no longer there.

Only Shruthi and Karthik remained.

And the silence between them wasn’t empty anymore.

---

The door clicked shut behind her.

Not loudly.

But decisively enough that it changed the room.

---

Shruthi leaned slightly against the table, trying to steady herself more than she admitted.

The drinks had blurred the edges of everything—thoughts, decisions, even restraint.

Karthik stood near the projector screen, watching her.

Not moving closer.

Not moving away.

---

“You should’ve gone home,” she said softly.

“So should you,” he replied.

A faint pause.

“But neither of us did.”

---

That made her look up.

---

The fluorescent light above flickered once, then stabilized.

Somewhere outside, a cleaning staff cart rolled past.

Inside, the room felt sealed off from everything else.

---

Karthik took a slow step forward.

Then stopped again.

As if testing whether the space between them still had rules.

---

Shruthi didn’t tell him to stop.

That was the problem.

She should have.

She didn’t.

---

“You’re different when you’re not pretending,” he said quietly.

“I’m always pretending,” she replied.

“No,” he said. “Not now.”

---

The honesty landed too close.

She looked away, then back again—like she couldn’t decide where to keep her gaze safe.

---

“Why are you here with me?” she asked.

The question wasn’t firm anymore.

It was searching.

---

Karthik didn’t answer immediately.

He just looked at her.

Like he was finally allowing himself to.

---

“Because when you’re around,” he said slowly, “everything else becomes background noise.”

---

Shruthi let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.

Her fingers loosened on the edge of the table.

---

“Don’t say things like that,” she whispered.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with them.”

---

That was the moment he moved closer.

Not fast.

Not sudden.

Just inevitable.

---

Now there was no table between them.

Only space.

And even that felt temporary.

---

Shruthi’s voice softened.

“You’re crossing lines you shouldn’t.”

---

Karthik’s eyes didn’t leave hers.

“I think we crossed them a while ago. We’re just noticing now.”

---

Her breath wavered slightly.

The room felt warmer.

Or maybe it was just him being too close.

---

Neither of them spoke for a few seconds.

That silence wasn’t calm.

It was loaded with everything they were avoiding saying out loud.

---

Shruthi’s hand lifted slightly, as if to create distance.

But it stopped halfway.

---

Karthik noticed.

And didn’t take advantage of it.

He just waited.

---

That patience did more damage than urgency ever could.

---

Her voice came quieter now.

“If we stop pretending… this changes everything.”

---

Karthik nodded once.

“I know.”

---

A pause.

Longer this time.

---

Shruthi looked at him properly now.

Not as a colleague.

Not as a passing presence in her life.

Something else.

Something she hadn’t named yet.

---

The space between them disappeared slowly.

Not forced.

Not decided.

Just surrendered to.

---

Her forehead rested briefly against his.

A moment of stillness that felt heavier than movement.

---

Neither of them spoke after that.

Because there was nothing left that words could hold safely.

---

And when the door of the conference room stayed closed a little longer than it should have, the rest of the world outside simply assumed they had already left.
