Chapter 42 — One More Night

The fourth day in Coimbatore became the turning point.

Not because something dramatic happened.

Because emotional exhaustion slowly lowered every boundary both of them had been trying to protect.

---

The client issue had finally stabilized by evening.

After days of pressure, continuous meetings, and sleepless nights, the atmosphere inside the office relaxed for the first time.

People smiled again. Jokes returned. Even the client team insisted on taking Shruthi and Karthik out for dinner as gratitude.

Shruthi initially refused politely.

But after constant pressure, she agreed.

---

The dinner happened at a quiet rooftop restaurant near Race Course Road.

Cool breeze. Dim lighting. Soft A.R Tamil melodies playing somewhere in the background.

And for the first time during the trip, Shruthi wasn’t thinking about work every second.

---

Karthik noticed the difference immediately.

She looked calmer tonight.

Less guarded.

The tension around her face had softened slightly.

Even her laughter returned naturally during conversations.

And unfortunately, that made her even harder for him to emotionally distance himself from.

---

By the time dinner ended, light rain had started again.

Not heavy.

Just enough to make the city glow under streetlights.

The client team left first after thanking them repeatedly.

Soon only Shruthi and Karthik remained near the parking area waiting for their cab.

---

“It finally ended,” Karthik exhaled dramatically.

“For now,” Shruthi corrected.

“Please let me enjoy peace for ten minutes.”

That made her smile faintly again.

---

The cab got delayed because of rain and traffic.

Fifteen minutes became thirty.

So they walked slowly under the hotel awning area while waiting.

And slowly, conversation drifted away from office.

---

Shruthi spoke about college days. How she once wanted to leave Chennai completely. How marriage and responsibility changed plans gradually.

Karthik listened quietly.

Not interrupting.

Just listening carefully the way he always did.

And that attention itself became dangerous again.

---

Then suddenly he asked softly:

“Are you happy?”

The question caught her completely off guard.

---

She looked at him for several seconds before answering.

“That’s not a simple question anymore.”

Karthik immediately regretted asking.

But before he could apologize, she continued quietly.

“Lokesh is a good man.”

The answer sounded honest.

Yet incomplete.

---

“And you?” he asked carefully.

Shruthi gave a tired smile.

“I don’t even know what happened to me these past few months.”

Rainwater slid slowly from the edge of the roof nearby.

The city around them had grown quieter.

And somewhere inside that silence, emotional honesty began replacing caution.

---

“You felt alone,” Karthik said softly.

She looked up sharply.

Because he had understood it exactly.

---

“I shouldn’t have,” she whispered.

“But I did.”

For the first time, neither of them pretended anymore.

Not about the attraction. Not about the emotional closeness.

---

The cab finally arrived.

But fate complicated things again.

Due to waterlogging near the hotel road, the driver dropped them a little away from the entrance.

By the time they walked back through the rain-covered pathway, both were partially drenched despite trying to avoid it.

Shruthi laughed softly in frustration while trying to wipe rainwater from her face.

“This trip is cursed.”

“You look happier than first day.”

That sentence made her stop walking briefly.

Because it was true.

And because she hated that it was true.

---

Inside the hotel elevator, silence returned again.

Only the hum of the lift filled the space.

Karthik stood beside her close enough to feel the faint scent of rain and perfume around her.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

But awareness thickened heavily.

---

When the elevator stopped at Shruthi’s floor, she stepped out first.

Then paused.

Karthik looked at her silently.

And for one dangerous second, neither seemed willing to leave.

---

“Goodnight,” he finally said quietly.

She nodded.

But didn’t move immediately.

---

The corridor remained empty.

Rain tapped softly against distant windows.

And somewhere between exhaustion, emotional loneliness, relief, attraction, and the strange intimacy built over days away from reality —

something shifted again.

---

Shruthi looked at him one last time.

Not with innocence anymore.

Not fully with resistance either.

Just confusion.

Human confusion.

The kind born when emotional need and moral clarity stop aligning properly.

---

Karthik slowly walked closer.

Careful.

Giving her enough space to stop him.

Enough time to reject him.

---

She didn’t.

Not immediately.

And that silence itself became the most dangerous answer of all.

---

The next few moments would decide everything.

Not just because of desire.

Because once two emotionally vulnerable people cross a certain line willingly —

they can never return to pretending nothing existed between them.
