Chapter 37 — The Weight of One Mistake

The next morning began too normally.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

---

The alarm rang at six.

Rain clouds still covered the Chennai sky, leaving the apartment wrapped in dull blue light.

Shruthi opened her eyes slowly and immediately remembered the kiss.

Not as passion.

As shock.

As guilt.

As something that now existed permanently between her and Karthik whether they acknowledged it or not.

---

Beside her, Lokesh was still asleep facing the other side, one arm resting near the edge of the bed.

Peaceful.

Unaware.

That sight twisted something painfully inside her chest.

For a brief second, Shruthi simply watched him silently.

Years together. Marriage. Hasini. A full life built patiently over time.

And now one moment of weakness had entered it like a crack in glass.

Small.

But impossible to completely erase.

---

She quietly got out of bed and walked toward the kitchen before anyone else woke up.

The apartment remained silent except for ceiling fan sounds and distant rainwater dripping outside.

Shruthi held the kitchen counter for a moment and closed her eyes.

“What am I doing…”

The whisper disappeared into the empty room.

---

Meanwhile, across the corridor, Laila stood near her balcony watering plants while Shah Rukh still slept heavily after his drunken night. Two days in a row, which kind of irritated laila, and she wanted to confront Shahrukh to stop this. But then..

Her mind unexpectedly drifted toward Lokesh.

Not intentionally.

Just small flashes: his laughter, helping carry Shah Rukh, the brief accidental glance when her saree slipped, their tea conversation afterward.

Nothing improper had happened.

Still, something had shifted.

She could feel it too.

---

And that awareness made her careful the next morning.

Very careful.

---

When Lokesh finally woke up, Hasini had already climbed onto the bed and was using his stomach as a jumping platform.

“Appaaa wake up!”

“Aiyo murder attempt.”

Shruthi watched them from the doorway holding coffee cups.

Usually this scene warmed her immediately.

Today it hurt slightly.

Because guilt changes ordinary love into something fragile.

---

Lokesh accepted the coffee and noticed her expression instantly.

“You slept late?”

“Hm.”

“Party headache?”

“Maybe.”

He studied her face a second longer.

Then casually:

“Karthik there?”

The question arrived without suspicion.

Just conversation.

Still, Shruthi’s fingers tightened slightly around her cup.

“Hm.”

“How was he?”

That simple question nearly exhausted her emotionally already.

“Normal.”

Lokesh nodded slowly.

“He spoke?”

“A little.”

“Good.”

Good.

The word echoed uncomfortably inside her head.

If only he knew.

---

Breakfast passed quietly that morning.

Hasini spoke nonstop about college competitions while Lokesh pretended to take her seriously like an Olympic coach.

Shruthi smiled when needed.

Answered when needed.

But mentally, she remained somewhere else entirely.

---

At office, she deliberately avoided looking toward Karthik’s desk initially.

She immersed herself in mails, meetings, spreadsheets.

Anything.

But avoidance only made awareness stronger.

Because she knew exactly where he sat even without turning.

---

Around eleven-thirty, fate finally forced interaction.

During a client discussion, both ended up alone briefly near the printer room.

The moment they saw each other, silence immediately swallowed the space.

---

Karthik looked tired too.

Not guilty in the dramatic sense.

Emotionally shaken.

Like someone who understood life had changed slightly overnight.

---

“Morning,” he said softly.

Shruthi nodded once.

“Hm.”

Neither moved.

Neither knew how.

---

Finally Karthik spoke quietly.

“Are you okay?”

She almost laughed at the absurdity.

“No.”

The honesty startled both of them.

---

Karthik looked down briefly.

“I didn’t sleep properly.”

“That makes two of us.”

Rain hit the office windows softly behind them.

The sound filled pauses neither knew how to cross anymore.

---

“We shouldn’t repeat yesterday,” Shruthi said carefully.

Karthik nodded immediately.

“I know.”

“But?”

He looked at her then.

And unfortunately, honesty remained his biggest weakness.

“I can’t pretend it meant nothing.”

The sentence landed heavily.

Because part of her felt the same.

That was exactly what made this dangerous.

---

Shruthi stepped back slightly.

“It can’t mean anything.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“I’m trying.”

That answer hurt more than manipulation would have.

Because he genuinely was trying.

---

That evening, By the time her cab entered their apartment complex, the sky had already turned dark blue under fresh rain clouds.

As the cab slowed near the park area inside the apartment campus, Shruthi looked outside absent mindedly.

And then she saw them.

---

Hasini was laughing loudly near the swings.

Lokesh stood nearby pretending to chase her while Laila sat on the low park wall smiling and clapping dramatically at Hasini’s running commentary.

The three of them looked strangely comfortable together under the yellow apartment lights.

Like a small evening routine already formed without her.

---

Shruthi remained inside the cab for one extra second watching them.

Not because anything inappropriate was happening.

Because the image disturbed her emotionally in ways she couldn’t fully explain.

Hasini looked happy.

Lokesh looked relaxed.

And Laila—

Laila looked like she belonged there too naturally.

---

When Hasini finally spotted the cab, she shouted immediately:

“Mammaaaa!”

Lokesh turned.

So did Laila.

Shruthi stepped out slowly adjusting her handbag while rain-smelling wind moved through the apartment courtyard.

“You came late,” Lokesh said casually once she approached.

“Traffic.”

“Chennai and traffic are in love,” Laila joked softly.

Shruthi forced a faint smile.

---

Hasini grabbed Shruthi’s hand immediately.

“Mamma appa lost race!”

“False allegations,” Lokesh protested.

“He cheated!”

“I’m forty years old. Why will I cheat against six-year-old?”

“Because losing.”

Even Laila laughed at that.

---

For a few minutes they remained there casually while children continued playing nearby.

Ordinary conversation.

Ordinary evening.

Yet Shruthi felt emotionally outside the scene somehow.

Watching instead of belonging.

---

Laila eventually stood up first.

“Okay enough. Mosquitoes starting conference.”

Hasini groaned dramatically.

“Noooo.”

“Tomorrow again.”

After ruffling Hasini’s hair gently, Laila walked back toward the apartment block.

And for reasons Shruthi herself couldn’t explain properly, her eyes unconsciously followed Lokesh’s expression while he watched Laila leave.

Only for a second.

Still enough to disturb her further.

---

Later that night, after dinner and homework and finally putting Hasini to sleep, Shruthi stood alone near the balcony staring at rainwater dripping from nearby terraces.

Behind her, Lokesh worked quietly on his laptop.

The apartment felt peaceful.

Safe.

And suddenly she realized something terrifying:

Nothing had actually broken yet.

Not openly.

No affair. No betrayal exposed. No marriage destroyed.

Everything still looked repairable.

Which meant the real danger was beginning now.

Not from one kiss.

But from what they chose next.
