Chapter 25: The Shift in the Shadows

The fluorescent lights of the corporate office hummed with a sterile, uncaring efficiency.

For Shruthi, stepping back into the workspace the morning after Lokesh’s devastating boardroom revelation felt like walking a tightrope over a canyon. She kept her head down, her fingers flying across her keyboard, hiding behind a wall of spreadsheets.

A week dragged by in agonizing slow motion. Every time the elevator doors slid open, Shruthi’s chest tightened. Every shadow that passed her cubicle made her breath catch.

Then, on Thursday afternoon, he arrived.

Karthik walked through the glass doors of the department, his face still bearing the faint, yellowish-purple remnants of bruises around his eyes.

His nose, though surgically reset, was distinctly different—sharper, crooked, a permanent scar of the violence that had broken their lives apart.

He walked straight to the HR manager’s glass cabin, holding a folder of medical documents.

"Medical emergency," the office gossip whispered near the water cooler. "Hear he’s asking for an extended leave or a structural transfer. Something about post-operative trauma."

Shruthi didn't look up, but her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. *He’s here.*

Throughout the afternoon, Karthik tried to orchestrate a moment alone with her. He loitered near the printer when she stood up to collect her documents. He timed his coffee breaks to match hers.

But Shruthi was a ghost. She bypassed him without a glance, using her colleagues as human shields, her face an unreadable mask of absolute stone. Every petty corporate ambush he planned fell entirely flat.

It wasn't until 6:30 PM, when the floor had mostly emptied and the cleaning crew began their rounds, that he finally cornered her.

Shruthi was packing her laptop into her bag when a shadow fell across her desk.

"Shruthi. Please."

She stopped. Slowly, she stood up, keeping the heavy mahogany desk between them as a physical barrier. Her eyes met his, devoid of the panic he was likely expecting.

There was only a profound, freezing disgust.
"Don't run," Karthik said, his voice a low, urgent whisper. He held his hands up, palms open, a pathetic attempt to look harmless.

"I'm not here to threaten you. Or Lokesh. I swear to God."

Shruthi didn't say a word. She crossed her arms, her silence acting as a heavy, suffocating weight in the empty office.

"I just... I needed to say I’m sorry," Karthik stammered, his eyes darting nervously toward the exit. "What happened at Divya's place... I was out of my mind. The alcohol, the stress... it’s not who I am. I know I broke your trust. I know I ruined everything.

When Lokesh came to my apartment... I deserved that punch, Shruthi. I really did. I’m not going to press charges. I just want us to go back to normal.

Please tell Lokesh I’m dropping everything."

Shruthi listened. She didn't blink. She didn't interrupt his stuttering, desperate monologue. She watched the way his hands trembled, the way his crooked nose shifted when he spoke, and she realized something profound: he wasn't a corporate mastermind right now.

He was a pathetic, desperate man trying to manipulate his way out of the social death sentence he had brought upon himself. He wanted her forgiveness not because he felt guilty, but because her silence made him feel safe.

When he finally ran out of words, panting slightly, looking at her with begging eyes, Shruthi calmly zipped her laptop bag. She slung it over her shoulder.
"Are you done?" she asked, her voice chillingly quiet.

Karthik blinked, caught off guard. "Shruthi, I—"

Without giving him another syllable, she walked right past him. The click of her heels against the tiled floor was the only answer he received as she left him standing alone in the dimming office light.

The Strategy at Home

The kitchen was quiet when Shruthi returned. Lokesh was sitting at the island, a glass of water in front of him, his laptop open to his company’s financial ledger.

The strain of the past week had taken a toll on him; his shoulders were hunched, his jaw perpetually tight.

Shruthi set her bag down and poured herself a cup of tea. She sat opposite him, waiting until he closed the laptop and looked up at her.

"He came to the office today," Shruthi said directly, skipping any preamble.
Lokesh’s entire body stiffened.

The air in the room instantly turned volatile. "What did he do? Did he touch you? Shruthi, if he used that compliance audit to—"

"Lokesh, stop. Listen to me," she interrupted, her voice firm, placing her hand over his trembling arm. "He didn't threaten the contract. In fact, he tried to apologize to me."

Lokesh let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "Apologize? The bastard leverages my company's future, corners you, and thinks a sorry fixes it?"

"It didn't work. I didn't give him an inch," Shruthi said, her eyes locking onto his with a fierce, calculating calm. "

And there’s more. He applied for a medical transfer today. HR approved it before we left. He’s being assigned to a completely different regional team starting next week. He won't even be on this floor anymore."

Lokesh stared at her, the frantic rage in his eyes slowly giving way to confusion. "A different team? But he still holds the compliance veto for my firm, Shruthi.

He can still pull the plug on the contract from wherever he sits."
"No, he can't. Not if he’s trying to save his own skin," Shruthi explained, her voice dropping to a sharp, strategic whisper. "I watched him today, Lokesh. He is terrified.

He realized that the 'compliance power' he bragged about in the boardroom doesn't work if I refuse to play his game.

He knows that if he touches your contract or sends me a single text, I will take that broken latch straight to his new regional head and file a sexual harassment case that his uncle won't be able to bury."

She leaned closer, her grip on his arm tightening.

"He’s retreating, Lokesh. He thought he could use the office to force me back into that silent contract, but he failed. I can manage his advances. I know exactly how to handle him now.

You focus on delivering the logistics project. Let him sit in his new corner and watch us rebuild our lives out of the wreckage he made."

Lokesh looked at his wife, seeing the raw, unyielding strength that had replaced the panicked girl from Divya's house.

The knot in his chest loosened just a fraction. He didn't smile, and the scars on their marriage were still deep, but for the first time in a week, he reached out and took her hand.
