Chapter 24— The Difference Between Fear and Disgust

The silence inside the car felt heavier than the rain outside.

Shruthi sat near the window, arms folded tightly, staring at blurred streetlights sliding across wet Chennai roads.

Lokesh drove quietly.

Neither had properly spoken after leaving Divya’s function.

Because both of them were still replaying the same moment differently.

---

Karthik.

Drunk.

Crossing a line.

Not physically violent.

Not openly shameless.

But enough.

Enough to break comfort.

Enough to change trust.

Enough that Shruthi still felt angry every time she remembered his eyes lingering too long after everyone else laughed it away.

---

Lokesh finally spoke first.

“You sure you’re okay?”

Shruthi answered immediately.

“Yes.”

Too quickly.

Lokesh noticed.

But didn’t push.

---

That irritated her even more suddenly.

Because she knew what he was doing.

He was controlling himself.

Controlling anger.

Controlling humiliation.

Controlling the instinct to react immediately.

And somehow that restraint made her feel worse than shouting would have.

---

Back at home, Laila opened the door half-asleep carrying Hasini carefully on her shoulder.

“She refused to sleep until cartoon negotiations ended,” Laila whispered dramatically.

Despite everything, Shruthi smiled softly.

“Sorry.”

“Please. She’s sweet.”

Lokesh gently carried Hasini inside while thanking Laila quietly.

Normal scene.

Domestic scene.

Safe scene.

And suddenly Shruthi realized how badly she wanted normal again.

---

Later that night, after Hasini slept, the apartment became painfully quiet.

Lokesh stood near the balcony holding a glass of water.

Shruthi remained seated on the sofa staring at nothing.

Finally—

“I should’ve stopped him there itself.”

Lokesh turned slowly.

The sentence came from somewhere deeper than anger.

From disappointment.

In herself.

---

“He was drunk,” Lokesh said calmly.

“That’s not excuse.”

“No.”

“He knew what he was doing.”

Lokesh didn’t answer immediately.

Because truthfully?

He agreed.

---

Shruthi laughed once bitterly.

“You know what’s insulting? He probably thinks I’ll just adjust and move on.”

Lokesh watched her carefully now.

“He crossed line. You don’t have to defend it.”

“I’m not defending him.”

But even she knew her reaction earlier had looked exactly like defense.

Not because she accepted what Karthik did.

Because panic had overtaken judgment.

Panic that:

Lokesh would explode,

friendships would collapse,

people would create drama,

everything would become ugly publicly.

So instead of reacting emotionally—

she had reacted practically.

And now practical decisions felt morally weak.

---

Lokesh sat opposite her quietly.

“You trusted him.”

Shruthi nodded slowly.

“That’s what’s making me angry.”

Not attraction.

Not scandal.

Trust.

---

She rubbed her forehead tiredly.

“I treated him like friend. Genuine friend.”

Lokesh listened silently.

“And he stood there looking at me like…” she stopped mid-sentence.

Disgust flickered briefly across her face.

Not fear.

Disgust.

At the realization that maybe moments she thought were harmless friendship had not been harmless for him at all.

---

“He kept watching,” she said quietly.

Lokesh’s jaw tightened immediately.

Tiny reaction.

Still visible.

Shruthi noticed it instantly.

That protective anger.

Controlled.

But real.

---

“He’s lucky you stayed calm,” she muttered.

Lokesh looked away briefly before answering.

“I stayed calm because you asked.”

That sentence hit harder than shouting would have.

Because she knew it was true.

---

For a long moment neither spoke.

Rain continued outside softly.

Then Lokesh finally asked the real question.

“So now what?”

Shruthi stared at the floor.

And for the first time since the incident—

she answered honestly.

“I don’t know.”

---

Because that was the uncomfortable truth.

If Karthik had been:

Lokesh’s friend,

some random stranger,

a colleague she barely cared about—

cutting him off would have been immediate.

Easy.

But emotional reality was messier.

She genuinely liked him as a person before this.

That friendship had been real to her.

Which made betrayal feel more confusing, not less.

---

“I hate that I’m even thinking about this,” she admitted softly.

Lokesh leaned back quietly.

“You’re trying to understand whether one mistake defines whole person.”

Shruthi looked up slowly.

“And?”

Lokesh answered carefully.

“That depends whether he understands what he did.”

---

Another silence.

Heavier this time.

---

Shruthi finally whispered:

“If I continue acting normal… then maybe I’m disrespecting myself.”

Lokesh didn’t interrupt.

“And if I completely erase someone immediately after one ugly moment… then what was friendship even worth?”

There it was.

The actual conflict.

Not romance.

Not hidden desire.

Human disappointment.

---

Lokesh spoke after a long pause.

“You don’t owe him comfort now.”

Shruthi nodded slowly.

“And you don’t have to protect him from consequences just because he matters to you.”

That line stayed with her.

Because deep down, that was exactly what she had tried to do earlier.

Protect everyone from fallout.

Including Karthik.

---

Shruthi suddenly laughed tiredly.

“RCF-type readers would probably slap me themselves now.”

That unexpectedly made Lokesh smile faintly.

“Probably.”

“They’ll say I’m being stupid.”

“Some of them maybe.”

She leaned back finally, exhausted.

“Maybe they’re right.”

Lokesh shook his head slowly.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You’re not stupid for being conflicted. You’re just realizing friendship and trust are not same thing anymore.”

---

And somewhere inside that quiet apartment—

for the first time in weeks—

Shruthi and Lokesh were finally emotionally on the same side again.

Not because the problem disappeared.

But because the illusion around it had.
