Adultery His wife, Her secrets: Rain,Whiskey and Temptation (CH:55 HOT)
#46
The humid air inside the car was suffocating, smelling faintly of old leather and the sharp, chemical sting of stale alcohol. Outside the windshield, the pale, bruised gray of dawn was just beginning to break over the suburban street, casting long, eerie shadows through the morning mist.

Chapter 23: Collateral Truths

Lokesh sat frozen in the driver’s seat. His fingers gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were completely white, but the keys merely dangled from the ignition.

He hadn't started the engine. His breath came in ragged, heavy heaves, his mind trapped in a violent loop of the night's events.

"Are you seriously just going to sit here?" Shruthi’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and brittle. She was staring straight ahead, her hands wrapped like a vice around the purse in her lap.

Her hair was still damp from the bath, clinging to the collar of the clothes Divya had lent her.

Lokesh let out a hollow, bitter laugh that sounded more like a choke. "Start the car? Go where, Shruthi? Home? So we can crawl into bed and pretend my best friend didn't just violate your privacy while my own wife defended him?"

"He didn't violate anything!" Shruthi snapped, turning her head sharply to face him.

Her eyes were bright, fueled by a volatile mixture of lingering intoxication and stubborn, defensive pride. "Why do you have to make everything so dramatic? It was an accident, Lokesh.

The door was half-open. He was drunk out of his mind—you *know* how he gets when he crosses the line. He probably thought it was the guest toilet."

"Then why did he fake being asleep?!" Lokesh turned on her, his face flushed with a dangerous cocktail of betrayal and rage.

"Why did he lie there like a coward while I was screaming at you? Why did he bolt like a thief the second Divya called him out? Tell me that, Shruthi!"

"Because of *you*!" she fired back, her voice echoing violently inside the cramped space of the car. "Look at yourself right now! You’re looking for an excuse to be violent.

Karthik knew that if he spoke up, you’d lose your mind and beat him half to death. I protected him because someone had to be the rational one tonight! If you go after him, you’ll end up in jail. And for what? A stupid, drunken misunderstanding?"

Lokesh stared at her, a terrifying, vast distance opening up between them in the quiet car.

But beneath her fierce, defensive mask, Shruthi’s stomach was churning with a sickening knot of reality. She wasn't fighting to protect Karthik because she cared about him. She was fighting because the alternative—the truth—was a horror she couldn't afford to face.

If she admitted that Karthik had sneaked in intentionally, she would have to accept that she was a victim.

She would have to live with the violating, dirty feeling of a trusted friend looking at her naked body. Worse, she knew Lokesh. If he knew the truth, there would be a bloodbath.

He would ruin his life, go to prison, and their entire social circle would explode in a humiliating scandal.

She would forever be the woman at the center of a dirty neighborhood drama.
To Shruthi, burying the truth under a plausible lie was the only way to keep her world from collapsing.

She took a deep breath, forcing the aggressive edge to drain from her posture. She needed to disarm his rage, and she knew exactly which buttons to push.

Slowly, she reached across the console, placing her cold, trembling hand over his white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel.

"Lokesh... please. Look at me," she whispered. Her voice cracked, and she let the tears she had been suppressing finally spill over her cheeks.

Lokesh’s jaw remained tightly clenched, but his shoulders visibly tensed at the sound of her crying. He slowly turned his head to look at her.

"Do you honestly think I’m happy right now?" Shruthi asked, her voice thick with engineered vulnerability.

"Do you think I want to sit here and talk about another man seeing me like that? It makes me feel sick to my stomach, Lokesh. It’s deeply humiliating."

Lokesh’s expression softened just a fraction, his protective instincts warring with his anger. "Then why are you fighting me on this? He lied to us. He ran."
"I am not protecting *him*! I am protecting **us**!" she cried out softly, leaning closer to him, her eyes pleading.

"Think about it, Lokesh. If we make this a crime, what happens? You hunt him down. You fight him. You end up in a security officer station, Ganesh and Divya look at us like we’re trash, and my dignity is completely stripped away in public. Is that what you want?"

She squeezed his hand, her voice dropping to a low, intense whisper, spinning the narrative she needed him to believe.

"He was completely wasted, Lokesh. He stumbled down the hall, opened the wrong door, realized what he did, and panicked.

He faked being asleep because he was terrified of you. He ran because he knew you’d kill him. It was a disgusting, horrific mistake. But it was just a *mistake*. Let him live with the shame of it."

Lokesh listened, his breathing slowing down. The story she was weaving offered him an escape route. It allowed his ego to believe his wife wasn't targeted, and it saved him from a path of violence that could destroy his future.

"Look at me," Shruthi begged, gently lifting his chin so their eyes locked.

"Don't let his stupidity ruin our marriage or your life. Please. Just take me home."

A heavy, suffocating silence filled the car as Lokesh stared into his wife's tear-filled eyes. The roaring fire in his chest slowly died down into ash, replaced by a profound, bone-deep exhaustion.

Without a word, he turned the key. The engine roared to life, cutting through the dawn stillness. He shifted into drive and pulled away from the curb, leaving Divya’s house behind. He had accepted the lie because it was easier to live with than the truth.

As the car accelerated down the empty street, Shruthi turned her head back to the passenger window, watching the yellow glow of the streetlights fade away.
She had won.

She had convinced him. But as her eyes stared blankly into the gray morning, she remembered the distinct, deliberate sound of that door lock clicking—and the chilling realization that Karthik had stood in the dark, watching her, for far longer than an accident would ever take.

She had saved her marriage tonight, but she knew she had just entered a dangerous, unwritten contract with a predator.
