Chapter 18:A Marriage in the Balance
Shruthi stares at Lokesh, her eyes stinging with tears of anger and humiliation.
"Lokesh, we are in Divya's house! Why would you sneak up on the door like that? If you wanted to come in, why didn't you just say something instead of clicking the lock and running away?"
Lokesh looks completely blindsided. "Shruthi, what are you talking about? I'm your husband!
Why would I sneak around to look at you?
I was literally just walking to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I didn't touch the guest room door!"
"I heard the door, Lokesh!" Shruthi whispers fiercely, her voice trembling. "Don't play dumb with me right now."
Karthik’s Twisted Advantage
Over on the couch, Karthik’s heart is hammering against his ribs, but not entirely out of fear. A dark, reckless thrill washes over him.
He realizes the gravity of what he’s done: he didn't just spy on a friend; he just drove a massive wedge between a married couple.
If he confesses now, he ruins his friendship with Lokesh, destroys his standing with Divya, and faces total disgrace.
But seeing Lokesh take the blame gives him a malicious sense of control.
He buries his face deeper into the couch cushion, letting out another heavy, fake snore, secretly relishing the fact that he holds a secret that could blow the whole room apart.
Divya’s Growing Suspicion
Divya steps into the middle of the hallway, looking between the married couple. As a close friend, she knows their dynamics, and something about this situation feels entirely wrong.
"Okay, both of you quiet down," Divya commands in a low, sharp whisper, glancing toward her kids' room.
She looks at Lokesh’s genuinely confused face, and then at Shruthi’s sheer panic.
Divya's eyes then slowly drift over to the living room. She looks at Karthik, who is supposedly passed out cold.
Divya knows how much liquor Karthik drank, but she also knows he wasn't that far gone just twenty minutes ago.
A sudden, uneasy suspicion creeps into her mind.
"Shruthi,"
Divya says softly, putting a hand on her friend's shoulder while keeping her eyes fixed on the couch. "Are you absolutely sure it was Lokesh at the door?"
