Scene 2
Summer arrived at Ashok and Vanitha’s Los Gatos home just before eleven. She carried a laptop bag slung over one shoulder and a coffee in her hand, her hair pulled back in a messy ponytail. Vanitha answered the door with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Hey,” Summer said, giving her a quick hug. “You okay? You look...”
“I’m fine.” Vanitha stepped back, gesturing her inside. “Selvam’s here. In the living room.”
Summer’s eyebrows rose slightly. “Hi Selvam.. did you just come back from…”
“His run ended late today.” Vanitha’s voice was carefully neutral. “Come on. He’s waiting for us.”
They walked through the house together, the sound of their footsteps muffled by the plush carpet. Through the tall windows, California sunshine streamed in, catching dust motes in golden beams. The living room opened up before them... spacious, modern, with its white sectional and glass coffee table. Selvam sat in the single armchair, his back straight, his hands resting on his knees.
He looked up as they entered. His eyes met Vanitha’s for a brief moment before shifting to Summer.
“Morning,” he said, his voice steady.
“Hey.” Summer dropped her bag on the floor and took a seat on the sectional. Vanitha settled beside her, close but not touching. “So. What’s going on?”
Selvam took a deep breath. “I slept with Tara.”
The words fell into the room like stones. Summer’s eyes widened. Vanitha’s expression didn’t change.
“Last night?” Summer asked.
“This morning.” Selvam’s jaw tightened. “After my run. I was passing their house, and she was on the porch. She called me over. Said she wanted to show me something.”
Vanitha’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Show you something.”
“Yes.” His gaze didn’t waver. “It moved faster than I anticipated. We went inside. She took me upstairs. And it ended with me inside her.”
The room went quiet. Summer stared at him, her coffee forgotten in her hand. Vanitha watched Selvam’s face, her expression unreadable.
“I’m sorry,” he said, the words directed at both of them. “I didn’t plan for it to happen. But it did, and now we have to deal with the consequences.”
Summer set her coffee down on the glass table with a soft clink. “Holy shit,” she whispered. Then, louder: “It actually worked.”
Selvam’s head snapped up. “What?”
Summer exhaled, a long, slow breath. “I knew it was a possibility,” she admitted. “Inside my plan. I just didn’t think it would happen so fast.”
Vanitha turned to look at her. “Your plan?”
Summer nodded, her cheeks flushing slightly. “When we talked about Tara, about her wanting what I have.” She gestured between Selvam and herself. “About how she’s been trying to one-up Vanitha since they met.”
“I remember,” Vanitha said slowly.
“I told myself that if things went the way I thought they might...” Summer shrugged. “I knew Selvam would handle it with enough judgment to keep things from becoming a disaster.”
Selvam stared at her. “You planned for me to sleep with her?”
“Not planned, exactly.” Summer’s voice was matter-of-fact. “More like... anticipated. I thought her competitive streak would kick in. I thought seeing our pictures, she would get jeolous of you sleeping with me.” She took a sip of her coffee. “And I was right.”
“So you used me as bait,” Selvam said, his voice flat.
Summer shook her head. “No. I trusted you to make your own choices. I just...” She hesitated. “I had a feeling about Tara. About what she might do if she thought she had a chance.”
Vanitha, who had been watching Selvam’s face throughout the entire confession, let a warm, unhurried smile spread across her features. “The right thing to do was empty her milk, yes, mama?”
For a moment, the room was silent. Then Selvam’s face cracked into a smile. A chuckle escaped him, low and surprised. Summer’s eyes widened, then she burst into laughter... a real, genuine laugh that made her double over. Vanitha joined in, her head tipping back as she giggled.
The three of them sat there, laughing together... the sound bouncing off the high ceilings, filling the room with something that felt like relief. For a moment, the whole scheme sat between them like something they’d built together and were now marveling at.
“God,” Summer gasped, wiping tears from her eyes. “I can’t believe it actually happened.”
“I can,” Vanitha said, still smiling. “Tara’s been looking at Selvam like he’s dessert since the day we moved in.”
Selvam shook his head, but he was smiling too. “You two are something else.”
“So now what?” Vanitha asked, her laughter subsiding. “What’s step two of this master plan?”
Summer’s expression grew more serious. “Now we wait.” She leaned forward, her elbows on her knees. “Tara’s competitive. She’s proud. And she’s not going to let this go.”
Selvam’s smile faded. “You think she’ll tell him?”
“I think,” Summer said carefully, “that she’ll do something to make sure he finds out. Not directly. But she’ll leave evidence. She’ll want him to know she’s desired. That she has options.”
“She’s still nursing,” Selvam said quietly. “Aryan’s just a year old.”
“And that,” Vanitha said, reaching over to squeeze his hand, “is exactly why you’re not the villain in this story.”
Summer nodded. “She made her choice. Just like you made yours.” She picked up her coffee again. “Now we let nature take its course. Tara will play her hand. Mohan will react. And then...”
“And then,” Vanitha finished, “we’ll be ready.”
Selvam looked between them, his expression a mix of resignation and wonder. “Remind me never to get on your bad sides,” he said.
Summer grinned. “You’re on our good side. That’s why you’re here.”
The three of them sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the morning light warming the room. Outside, a car door slammed. The sound of Ashok’s voice floated through an open window, talking to Latha as they walked toward the front door.
“We should get back to work,” Summer said, standing up. “Ashok will be wondering why we’re all sitting around the living room instead of coding.”
Vanitha nodded, rising to her feet. “I’ll make lunch in an hour.”
Selvam stayed seated, watching them. “I’m still processing,” he said. “All of it.”
Summer paused at the doorway. “That’s okay. Just remember... “ She smiled, the expression both warm and a little wicked. “You did exactly what you were supposed to do.”
As she left the room, Selvam turned to Vanitha. “Did I?”
