Chapter 89: The Price of Milk
Scene 1
The front door swung open. Selvam stepped into Ashok and Vanitha’s Los Gatos home, his shirt plastered to his chest with sweat, his breathing still uneven despite the cool morning air. The clock on the wall showed 10:15... well past his usual return time from his morning run.
Ashok stood at the kitchen island, coffee mug in hand. He looked up with a grin as Selvam wiped his face with a towel.
“Dad! There you are.” He raised an eyebrow. “What happened? A five-mile run took half the morning today?”
Selvam opened his mouth to answer. Before he could form the words, a baby’s wail pierced through three sets of walls and open windows from the Mohan villa next door. The cry was loud, inconsolable, with the high-pitched urgency of a hungry infant.
Vanitha set her coffee mug down on the marble counter without a sound. Her eyes met Selvam’s across the kitchen, her expression steady, her chin level, her hands flat on the counter.
Selvam held her gaze for exactly one beat. His jaw tightened. He looked away first.
“Poor little guy,” Ashok said, his back half-turned as he refilled his cup at the coffee maker. “Aryan’s probably hungry. Tara must be having one of those mornings.”
Neither Selvam nor Vanitha responded.
The silence hung between them at the island like a physical presence. Tara’s milk was gone. Both breasts emptied. And the two of them knew exactly whose mouth was responsible.
Selvam pulled out a stool and sat down. He reached for a glass, filled it with water from the pitcher. He wrapped both hands around it, his knuckles white.
Vanitha slid toward him without being asked. She rested her hip against the counter, close but not touching. Her eyes studied his profile... the firm line of his jaw, the slight shadow of stubble, the way his throat worked as he swallowed.
“You’re back late,” she said, her voice neutral.
“I know.” He didn’t look at her.
“You ran longer than usual.”
“I did.”
She waited. He took another drink.
“I ran to the park,” he said finally. “Then I turned around and came home.”
“Five miles?” Her tone was casual, but her eyes never left his face.
“Seven,” he said. “Maybe eight.”
Vanitha nodded slowly. “It’s a nice morning for running.”
“It is.”
The baby’s cry intensified from next door. Ashok winced, topping off his coffee with cream.
“Someone’s having a rough time,” he said. “I hope Tara’s okay.”
“She’s fine,” Selvam said, the words coming out sharper than he intended.
Vanitha’s hand moved to his shoulder. Her touch was light, just her fingertips resting on his damp shirt.
“Hungry?” she asked.
He shook his head. “No.”
“You should eat something. After your run.”
“I’ll be fine.”
Ashok turned, mug in hand. “You know what? I think I’ll head to the office a bit early today, I’ll take Latha.”
“Good idea,” Vanitha said, her eyes still on Selvam.
The front door closed behind him with a soft click. The baby’s crying continued, the sound carrying through the open windows.
“You should shower,” Vanitha said. “You’ll catch cold.”
“I’m not cold.”
“You’re sweating.”
“It’s the run.”
“The whole seven or eight miles of it.”
He turned to look at her then. Her eyes were steady on his, her expression unreadable.
“It wasn’t planned,” he said quietly.
“I know.”
“I didn’t go there meaning to... “
The baby’s cry cut off abruptly. The sudden silence felt louder than the noise had been.
Selvam caught her wrist, not tightly, just enough to hold her hand against his face. “I didn’t mean for it to happen.”
“But it did.”
“Yes.”
“And now we deal with it.” She leaned down, pressing her lips to his forehead. “Go shower. I’ll make you breakfast.”
He nodded, releasing her hand. As he stood, he let his fingers brush against hers... a touch so light it might have been accidental. But the look that passed between them held all the weight of everything that had happened, everything that was still to come.
