After moving to the right-side berth, I sat beside Aniklal Uncle and we continued our talking. It was around 8:45 pm and the bus took a halt for passengers' dinner near Alwar city. We, including Bijender ji, had dinner together. In the last 4 hours of chit chat, we all got more open to each other.
During dinner, Bijender ji suggested having some beers as it would help in relaxing on such a long journey. Aniklal Uncle quickly agreed to his suggestion and they both looked towards me. I felt they were asking if I had any objection. Although both were nearly strangers to me as I was knowing Aniklal Uncle for barely a couple of days and Bijender ji since only a few hours, considering their mood and excitement, I said it's fine. Quickly, Bijender ji brought 6 beer cans of 500 ml each. He said we could have one each now and another in the next stop at midnight. I was surprised that they were considering me for having beer as well and declined immediately. They insisted a few times, but I declined firmly. Ultimately, they took two cans each and kept the remaining two cans for the latter.
After having two strong beers together, both of them got in their mood, and started talking loudly and nonsense. And during the same, Bijender je asked Aniklal uncle that you are Gujjar and she is Dixit, how come she is your niece and started mocking with loud laugh. Being ashamed, Aniklal uncle quickly clarified to him that I am a daughter of his close friend. Bijender ji mocked saying, I was doubting that you both are a love couple and laughed loudly. Aniklal uncle also chuckled by patting softly on my thigh. I didn’t like the joke and responded sarcastically to Bijender ji with a smirk that on what angle he finds us a love couple, as there is no match in age, religion or even status. I said that in anger but later realised my mistake for using the word ‘status’, that might have hurt Aniklal uncle. Bijender ji responded readily in the same tone that he works in a hotel and sees all these everyday. Many young girls coming from upper class society, check- in to the hotel with all kinds of people and they don’t come for chit chat. He added further that many girls come just for a couple of hours and after enjoying themselves, she leaves the hotel and returns to her college or home.
Aniklal uncle found our discussion was turning into a heated argument. And before I could respond, he said, “are Bijender bhai… bo sab chakkar nahi hai. Humlog bas apne apne ghar ja rahe (Ooo… brother,… we don't have such matters… we are just going our homes)”.
I felt insulted by Bijender Ji's reply and got upset. I got up and excused myself saying, I am going to the bus. Aniklal uncle tried to stop me saying, we still have 10-12 mins of time, but I didn’t care and returned to the bus.
From my berth window, I saw that they were still talking and in a very funny way. Frequently, they were looking toward my berth window, whispering to each other and patting each other. It was very obvious, they were talking about me; something funny and may be vulgar.
I recalled Bijender Ji's comments that young rich girls come to hotels with men of all ages to have fun. In fact, that seemed to be true to me as well, as in Delhi often I was finding weird couples, where a young high profile girl was dating a cheap, matured man. But me as a Love couple with Aniklal uncle? … What a thought ! I just smiled at their imagination. Though looking at their current closeness and friendship, it seemed Aniklal uncle was well influenced by Bijender ji.
Suddenly, the bus started honking and they also boarded the bus. As soon as they returned to their berths, their ongoing discussion changed to whispering and then ended abruptly in front of me.
The bus left the Alwar halt by 9:30 pm and continued its remaining journey. A few minutes later, Aniklal uncle said that he was feeling tired and wanted to sleep. Bijender ji also agreed. We arranged our beds, pulled the curtains, and settled in.
I was not comfortable sleeping with Aniklal uncle on the shared berth even before, and after Bijender Ji’s recent allegation of ‘us as a Love Couple’ was making me more allergic, even though it was said in a lighter tone. Now, even a small body touch was making me worried for being doubted as uncle’s love partner, and so I was extra cautious.
I was exhausted after a long day of local commuting, buying tickets, and boarding the bus. Within ten minutes, I fell into a deep sleep.
