The first three days after Suriya’s return were strangely calm.
Suriya started work immediately, as if he had never left the field. He woke up at 5 AM every morning, quietly left the hotel Rahul had booked for him, and drove straight to the old gym site and the empty land near Rahul’s house. He took detailed measurements, spoke with landowners, noted down legal requirements, and made careful sketches — all without wasting a single minute.
Rahul was genuinely impressed. From a distance, he watched Suriya move with focus and discipline. There was no trace of personal agenda, no lingering glances at Anandhi, no emotional undercurrents. It was pure business. For the first time, Rahul felt a small sense of relief. He really has moved on, he thought. He’s just here to work.
Practical difficulties began to surface quickly.
The proposed shop and land were 25–30 minutes away from any decent hotel or proper eatery. Suriya was working late into the night — often until 11 PM or midnight — because of supplier meetings, contractor discussions, and site inspections. Rahul noticed him skipping proper meals or grabbing cheap roadside food at odd hours. A small pang of practicality hit Rahul: It’s inconvenient for him. He’s working hard for our partnership.
Anandhi stayed mostly in the background, taking care of AaRa and the older children. But she quietly observed everything. She felt a strange mix of relief that Suriya was not pushing any emotional buttons yet… and deep alarm.
The question he had asked her in the room — “We… or I?” — kept ringing in her ears. He knows everything, she thought. He certainly knows Rahul was behind his downfall. She decided she would stay alert, even if Rahul trusted him completely. The terrifying part was she couldn’t even warn Rahul. If she did, it would hurt everyone — Rahul’s pride, the fragile peace, and possibly the entire family.
By the end of Day 3, the practical issues had become obvious.
Suriya had been working non-stop. He returned to the hotel late again, exhausted, and ate whatever was available at that hour. Rahul, seeing him leave with just a small packet of biscuits and tea, felt another pang.
That night, when Suriya came to the house to discuss the next day’s plan, Rahul casually said, “It’s too late to find decent food outside. Why don’t you have dinner with us tonight?”
Suriya accepted politely. “Thank you. That would be helpful.”
It was the first family dinner in the house after a long time.
The atmosphere was awkward but civil. Rohan and Riya were visibly happy to see “Periyappa.” They chatted excitedly about college and toys. Suriya smiled at them and joked lightly, “Calling me Periyappa makes me feel older. It’s better than uncle, still… it’s like calling an old man. Just call me Appa shortly… or Suriya Appa. That’s enough.”
Rahul felt surprisingly okay with it. He even smiled a little.
AaRa, however, was still sleeping. Because of Suriya’s odd timings — early mornings and late nights — they had not been able to show her to him yet. Every time he came, she was either asleep or already down for the night.
After dinner, Suriya thanked Anandhi for the meal and left for the hotel.
As the door closed behind him, Rahul turned to Anandhi and said quietly, “He seems fine. No drama. Just work.”
Anandhi nodded silently, but inside her mind, the storm continued.
She still remembered the sharp question Suriya had asked her in the room — “We… or I?” — and the way his eyes had looked at her. She knew he was aware of far more than he was letting on. Yet she couldn’t warn Rahul. Doing so would shatter everything.
She decided she would stay alert.
Even if Rahul trusted Suriya completely.
Even if it meant carrying this heavy secret alone.
