Continued from the previous post...
When Menaka arrived at the palace, she found Seshadri waiting for her. "Namaste, Uncle! Please, come—let's go into the hall." She instructed a servant to arrange for some tea for all.
"Rani Sahiba, I have some bad news."
"Is there still more bad news left to come, Uncle?" She asked, handing him a cup of tea. Presented by Maitri.
"The mill workers have gone on strike."
"But why?"
"They found out that you are selling your share of the business, and they claim that their interests will not be safeguarded in the process."
"Uncle, we have always made every decision with their best interests in mind; why, then, this sudden strike?"
"Rani Sahiba, Jabbar is behind all of this. He has the workers' union leader wrapped around his little finger. He wants the buyer to be one of his own men. He attempted something similar last time as well, but he suffered a humiliating defeat back then."
"Hmm... Alright, Uncle. Please tell the workers that we will not make any decision without their support. Just ask them to return to work starting tomorrow."
"But, Rani Sahiba, wouldn't that amount to capitulating to them?"
"Uncle, think of how many workers are suffering losses because of just one man. Just because we are backing down this one time doesn't mean we will do so every time. Please, explain this to the workers on my behalf." Created by Maitri.
"As you wish," Seshadri said; he finished his tea and took his leave.
That night, for the first time since Raja Sahab's death, Menaka lay alone in her bed. Ever since his passing, her mother had not left her daughter alone for even a single moment.
She was wearing a slip that reached just above her knees. She tossed and turned, but sleep simply refused to come to her eyes. She was missing Raja Sahib. After tossing and turning for quite some time, the fatigue of the journey finally took its toll; her eyelids grew heavy, and shortly thereafter, she drifted off to sleep.
It was one o'clock in the morning. Silence reigned all around—but what was that? Who was that figure—evading the palace guards—that had crossed the lawn and reached the palace itself? Moments later, the shadowy figure opened a window and slipped inside. It was truly astonishing how he had managed to bypass the security alarms! He was now ascending the stairs to the upper floor. First, he opened the door to Raja Sahib's room and peeked inside; finding no one there, he moved on and opened the door to Menaka's room.
The moonlight streaming through the window bathed Menaka's fair body—clad only in a delicate slip—in a soft, ethereal glow. The stranger gazed upon her beauty for a while, then climbed onto the bed and leaned over her. Menaka’s eyes flew open as she felt his warm breath on her face. She was about to scream in terror when the stranger clamped his hand over her mouth.
Suddenly, amidst the fear and astonishment widening Menaka’s eyes, a flicker of recognition appeared; seeing this, the stranger removed his hand from her mouth. "...You!"
"Yes, it’s me," the stranger whispered, then pressed his lips against the Rani Sahiba's. Menaka responded to his kiss, wrapping her arms tightly around him. Maitri.
