30. The Distance and Invitation

After that last conversation with Raj, Gayatri couldn’t shake the weight of guilt that settled in her heart. His playful messages and flirtatious tone haunted her in quiet moments, especially when she was alone. She felt conflicted—part of her longed for the attention he gave her, but another part was screaming that it was wrong. She loved Siva, and whatever was brewing between her and Raj had to stop. She knew that her interactions with Raj, while mostly innocent, had begun to weigh heavily on her mind. 

She couldn’t deny that his attention and constant presence had started creating an inner turmoil, causing stress that she wasn’t fully aware of until now.

This health scare gave her the perfect reason to distance herself without having to explain or engage in any awkward conversations. She withdrew from social interactions, even cutting down on regular calls and texts, including those with Raj. 

Instead, she focused entirely on her well-being, her family, and creating a peaceful environment for herself. She decided to ignore Raj’s messages. Each time her phone pinged, she felt a familiar flutter in her chest, but she forced herself to put it away. She couldn’t allow herself to be drawn back into their flirtation. When Siva asked her why she seemed quieter than usual, she brushed it off with a tired smile, saying she was just overwhelmed with household work. Little did he know about the storm brewing inside her.

The weeks passed, and Gayatri managed to avoid Raj almost entirely. She ignored his messages, didn't answer his calls, and whenever he visited their home, she made sure she wasn’t around. If Siva asked Raj to join them for dinner or tea, Gayatri found excuses—chores, errands, headaches—anything to keep her distance. She was doing everything in her power to put space between them.

As weeks passed, Gayatri felt better physically and emotionally.

Raj had noticed the growing silence. Weeks had passed without any messages or calls from Gayatri, a stark contrast to their earlier interactions. The air between them had become thick with unspoken words, and the absence weighed heavily on his mind.

Finally, unable to take it any longer, he sent her a text:
“Bhabhi, have I done something to upset you?”

Gayatri sat at the kitchen table, staring at the screen. The message seemed simple, but the emotions behind it were anything but. Her heart ached as she read the words, knowing how confused Raj must have been. She had promised herself that this distance was necessary, a safeguard to prevent things from spiraling out of control. But explaining that to Raj seemed impossible.

She wanted to respond, to tell him it wasn’t his fault—that she had to create this space for her own peace of mind, to keep her marriage with Siva intact. But what could she say that wouldn’t hurt him? How could she explain that every time she saw him, she felt herself being pulled into something dangerous, something she wasn’t ready to face?

So, instead of replying, Gayatri left the message unread. She hoped the silence would be enough of an answer. She hoped Raj would understand that this was her way of protecting not just herself, but him too. But the guilt hung over her like a shadow, and as the days passed, it grew heavier with each moment of unacknowledged connection.

She sighed, her thumb hovering over the screen, then closed the message without responding, retreating once again into the quiet distance she had created between them.

A Trivial Situation: The Shopping Encounter

It had been nearly a month since Gayatri had spoken to Raj. The distance she kept had eased her mind somewhat, though she often found herself thinking about him. She had convinced herself that everything was under control, that she had made the right decision by pulling away. But fate, it seemed, had other plans.

One afternoon, Gayatri was out shopping for Chintu’s college supplies and a few things for the upcoming Holi celebrations. As she stood at the checkout counter, sorting through her items, she heard a familiar voice behind her.

Raj: "Gayatri bhabhi?"

Her heart skipped a beat, her hands faltering over the grocery bags. She turned slowly, her breath catching when she saw him standing there, smiling warmly. Raj looked just the same as she remembered—charming, confident, with that easy smile that always seemed to get to her. She had forgotten how seeing him in person made her feel so flustered.

Gayatri: "Raj... hi..."

Her voice was softer than she intended, and she cursed herself for sounding so nervous.

Raj: "It’s been a while. You’ve been... avoiding me, haven't you?"

There was no accusation in his tone, just curiosity. And something else—a trace of hurt.

Gayatri swallowed hard, trying to gather her thoughts. "I’ve just been busy, Raj. Things at home, with Chintu and Siva... you know how it is." She offered a weak smile, hoping he would accept the excuse.

Raj studied her for a moment, his gaze gentle but probing. He nodded slowly, understanding dawning in his eyes. "I understand. I won’t bother you, bhabhi."

Gayatri’s heart sank at the sadness in his voice. She hadn’t meant to push him away so harshly, but she knew it was for the best. "Raj... it’s not that I don’t want to talk to you. I just... I’ve had a lot on my mind." She didn’t want to elaborate, but the guilt gnawed at her.

Raj gave her a small smile, not pushing any further. "No worries, Bhabhi. I get it. Just take care of yourself, okay?"

As he turned to leave, Gayatri watched him go, her mind a whirl of emotions. She had kept him at a distance for so long, but seeing him again made it clear that the feelings she had been trying to suppress weren’t going to disappear so easily.

The Holi Invitation

A week later, Gayatri was preparing for Holi. Siva had been excited about the festival for weeks and had invited some friends over for the celebrations. The house was buzzing with energy, Chintu running around, and Gayatri herself feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.

As Siva scrolled through his phone, sending out messages to friends and family, he suddenly looked up at her.

Siva: "I’m inviting Raj over for Holi, okay? He loves this festival, and it’s been a while since we had him around."

Gayatri’s heart thudded in her chest. She hadn’t expected this, and the thought of Raj coming over after weeks of keeping her distance sent a surge of anxiety through her.

Gayatri: "I’m not sure if that’s a good idea. He might have other plans..."

Siva chuckled, raising an eyebrow teasingly. "Other plans? On Holi?" He leaned in closer with a playful grin. "Come on, Gayatri. On Holi, all the men just want to find an excuse to meet their crush and throw some color on them. Is that what you’re worried about? Who’s Raj planning to meet, hmm?"

He laughed, clearly enjoying his own joke, unaware of how much it rattled Gayatri inside. She forced a smile, trying to brush off her unease.

Gayatri: "No, no... nothing like that. I just meant... he might be busy."

Siva: "Busy? Holi’s not the time to be busy, it’s time to have fun! Trust me, he’ll be here. He wouldn’t miss it."

Gayatri felt trapped. She couldn’t refuse without raising suspicion, and she certainly didn’t want Siva to think anything was wrong between her and Raj. Finally, she nodded, forcing a smile.

Gayatri: "Of course yeah. Let’s invite him."

Siva grinned wider, still in a joking mood.

Siva: "Well, if Raj has some other plans, he’ll say no. But who knows, we’ll have to keep an eye on him!"

He said with a laugh, thoroughly enjoying the joke, completely unaware of how close to the truth he had unknowingly come.

Gayatri’s smile wavered, but she quickly recovered. Inside, her thoughts raced. As Siva turned back to his phone, she quietly walked to the kitchen, the weight of her worry settling in. Holi was supposed to be a joyful celebration, but this year, it felt like it would be anything but simple.

Later that night, as Gayatri lay in bed, the weight of the upcoming Holi celebration pressed down on her. Raj would be there. She would have to face him, interact with him in front of Siva and everyone else. But she couldn’t let anything slip—not her guilt, not her reluctance, not the emotions she had buried so deeply.

She had no choice but to act like everything was normal.

Raj’s Reply

The following morning, as Gayatri moved around the house, she noticed Siva on the phone, laughing. She couldn’t help but feel a knot in her stomach, knowing it had to be about the upcoming Holi celebration. Moments later, Siva called out to her from the living room.

Siva: "Raj said he might not make it for Holi this year!"

He frowned dramatically, glancing at Gayatri.

Gayatri paused, her heart pounding. "Really?" she asked, trying to sound casual, though her chest tightened with relief.

Siva: "Yeah, he’s giving me some lame excuses about work and meetings. Let’s see what he's really up to."

Siva grinned and put the phone back to his ear. Gayatri lingered nearby, half-listening to the conversation, her anxiety mixed with curiosity.

Siva (on phone): "Raj, come on, yaar. You can’t miss Holi, it’s tradition! What’s the real reason?"

Gayatri could hear Raj mumbling something on the other end. Siva’s grin widened, clearly amused.

Siva (teasing): "Wait, wait. Don’t tell me... you’re skipping Holi because you’ve got plans with someone special? Hmm? What, are you going to meet Rani on Holi?"

Siva chuckled as Raj’s voice grew louder, clearly flustered by the joke.

Raj (on phone): "What?! No, Bhayya, nothing like that! I’m just really swamped at work this week. I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it."

Siva (grinning): "Yeah, sure... swamped with work, huh? Or maybe you’re swamped with plans to charm someone under the guise of Holi colors?"

Gayatri tensed at the mention of Rani, hoping the conversation wouldn’t drift toward something more awkward.

Raj (laughing, on phone): "I swear, Bhayya, there’s no Rani, or anyone for that matter! Just a lot of deadlines. That’s all."

Siva leaned back, his tone shifting from playful to insistent.

Siva: "Come on, Raj. Forget the work excuses. You know this year Holi isn’t the same without you! Just show up for a few hours, man. You’ll have a blast!"

There was a pause on the other end of the line. Gayatri found herself holding her breath, torn between hoping Raj would decline and knowing it was inevitable that he’d give in to Siva’s persistence.

Finally, Siva beamed, clearly hearing the response he was hoping for.

Siva (laughing): "That’s the spirit! Raj says he wouldn’t miss it!"

He hung up the phone and turned toward Gayatri, grinning widely. "See? Told you! It’s going to be a great Holi this year."

Gayatri forced a smile, her heart sinking. On the outside, she tried to remain calm, but inside, the storm of conflicting emotions began to churn again.
