18. The Wedding Trip: A Memorable Journey

Siva had been on business trips before, but this time, Gayatri was supposed to attend a family wedding in another town, and Siva couldn’t join her due to his work commitments. Knowing the wedding was important and not wanting her to travel alone, Siva asked Raj to accompany Gayatri. Raj, ever the dependable friend, readily agreed. He’d been close to Siva and Gayatri for years now, and this was just another way to help out.

The wedding was a two-day affair, filled with festivities, dancing, and family bonding. For Raj, it wasn’t just about attending the wedding—it was about spending time with Gayatri, someone he had grown to admire in more ways than he could admit.

Arrival and the First Teases

From the moment they set off, the journey was filled with lighthearted teasing. Gayatri, dressed in a beautiful saree with elegant gold accents, looked stunning, as usual, her grace and charm effortless. As Raj drove, his eyes would occasionally flicker to her reflection in the rearview mirror, and Gayatri, catching him every time, would chuckle.

"Raj, you’ve been looking at me for the last ten minutes. Keep your eyes on the road, focus there. You keep looking at me like I’m some new scenery." she teased, her lips curving into a playful smile.

Raj laughed, feeling caught but not embarrassed. "What can I say, Bhabhi? You’ve outdone yourself today. I just want to make sure I don’t forget how beautiful you look. I’m just trying to figure out how someone can look this beautiful on a simple car ride to a wedding."

Gayatri raised an eyebrow, her tone teasing. "Oh, really? Is that why Siva trusted you to come along with me? To be my personal mirror? "

Raj shot her a mock-serious look. "I think he wanted me to protect you from all the admirers who’ll be trying to flirt with you."

Gayatri’s laughter filled the car, a soft sound that made Raj’s heart skip a beat. "I’m sure you’ll do an excellent job at that. You’ve been spending too much time with Siva. His flattery is rubbing off on you."

Raj gave a half-smile, turning briefly to meet her gaze. “And I’m not flattering you, Bhabhi. It’s just the truth. But I’ll be careful—don’t want you to start thinking I’m flirting.”


Gayatri raised an eyebrow. “Start thinking? Raj, you’ve been flirting since we left the house.”

The journey continued with similar playful banter, making the trip feel shorter than it was. Gayatri teased Raj about his "overly protective" nature, while Raj countered with mock complaints about how she had the power to make him nervous, even though they were just friends.

At the Wedding: Flirting and Fun

The evening wedding celebrations were in full swing, and Gayatri had just stepped aside from the main crowd to catch her breath for a moment. The air was filled with music, laughter, and the buzz of people chatting, but Gayatri wanted a few minutes of peace. However, before she could truly relax, two young men approached her, their smiles a little too friendly.

“You’re looking really beautiful tonight,” one of them said with a charming grin. His tone was light, but the way he looked at her felt a bit too much. “It's hard to believe someone as stunning as you is standing alone.”

Gayatri sensed the change in their behavior. They were no longer just being polite—they were flirting. She smiled politely but didn’t encourage them. 

“Thank you,” she said, her voice calm but keeping some distance.

The second boy stepped a little closer, his smile widening. “Your husband is a lucky man, but maybe he doesn’t realize just how lucky he is to miss seeing you like this.”

Before Gayatri could reply, Raj, who had been keeping an eye on her from a short distance, walked over. His voice was calm, but there was a firmness in it that made it clear he wasn’t here to joke around.

“I think that’s enough,” Raj said, stepping between Gayatri and the two boys. “Her husband may not be here, but I am. So, move along now.”

The boys looked surprised by Raj’s sudden appearance. One of them tried to defend himself, “We were just paying her a compliment, that’s all.”

Raj’s expression remained serious. “There’s a difference between a compliment and crossing the line. Don’t cross it.”

Sensing that Raj wasn’t someone to mess with, the boys exchanged awkward looks before backing off. “Alright, alright,” they mumbled, walking away with forced smiles. As soon as they were out of sight, Gayatri let out a soft laugh, shaking her head. “Raj, why did you scold them? They were harmless.”

Raj turned to her, his expression softening, but he still looked protective. “Harmless? They were being too bold, Bhabhi. You deserve better than cheap lines like that.”

Gayatri smiled, amused by how defensive he was getting. “But all they said was that I’m beautiful,” she teased. “Isn’t that what you’ve been saying all day too? So how are you any different from them, Raj?”

Raj blinked, caught off guard by her question. “That’s... different!” he stammered, rubbing the back of his neck, clearly flustered. “I mean, I’m not like them. I’m just... I’m just...”

Gayatri raised an eyebrow, a playful smile on her lips. “Just what, Raj?”

Raj struggled to find the right words, his face turning a bit red. “I’m not flirting with you, Bhabhi,” he said, though his hesitation made it clear he was unsure. “I’m just... appreciating you. That’s different.”

Gayatri laughed softly, enjoying his awkwardness. “Oh, is it? You’re just ‘appreciating’ me? Well, you seemed pretty upset when they said the same thing.”

Raj sighed, realizing he had walked right into her teasing. “Bhabhi, they weren’t appreciating you the way I do. They were just... well, you know.”

Gayatri took a step closer, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “No, I don’t know. Why don’t you explain the difference to me, Raj?”

Raj opened his mouth to speak but couldn’t find the words. “It’s just... different, okay? When I say it, it comes from respect.”

Gayatri chuckled again, clearly enjoying how flustered Raj was. “Alright, Raj. Keep telling yourself that.”

She turned to walk away, but before leaving, she glanced back at him with a playful smile. “Next time, let them compliment me a little longer, okay? It’s nice to hear it from someone other than you.”

Raj groaned, running a hand through his hair, feeling defeated. “You’re impossible, Bhabhi.”

Gayatri laughed as she walked away, leaving Raj standing there, a mixture of amusement and embarrassment written all over his face.

The wedding celebrations were starting to slow down, and Gayatri and Raj found themselves sitting together at one of the tables, sipping their drinks and watching the guests enjoying the music and dancing. The mood was light, and Gayatri still had that playful look in her eyes from earlier.

She turned to Raj with a teasing smile. “So, about those boys from earlier...”

Raj, already sensing where this was going, sighed dramatically. “Can we just forget about it, Bhabhi?”

Gayatri leaned back in her chair, clearly enjoying the teasing. “Why should I? You seemed pretty eager to protect me from those ‘dangerous’ compliments.”

Raj leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. “I wasn’t protecting you from compliments, Bhabhi. I was protecting you from their intentions. There’s a difference.”

Gayatri tilted her head, pretending to think. “Hmm... but didn’t you say earlier that you appreciate me too? So, are your intentions different, Raj?”

Raj felt his face getting warm under her playful gaze. “Of course, they’re different! I’m your friend... Siva’s friend. I’m just looking out for you.”

Gayatri chuckled. “And how would Siva feel if he knew you were chasing away all my admirers?”

Raj couldn’t help but smile. “He’d thank me! Trust me, he wouldn’t want you dealing with boys like that.”

Gayatri’s teasing softened as she looked at him, though there was still a glint of mischief in her eyes. “Maybe. But it’s still funny how serious you got over it.”

Raj shrugged, leaning back in his chair. “What can I say? I’m protective. You’re important to me.”

Gayatri’s smile became softer, sensing the sincerity in his words. For a moment, the teasing atmosphere between them shifted into something more thoughtful. “I know, Raj. And I really appreciate it. You’ve always been there when I needed you.”

Raj’s expression softened too, as he replied, “I’ll always be here for you, Bhabhi.”

But not wanting the conversation to get too serious, Gayatri quickly returned to her playful self. “Just make sure you don’t scare off too many admirers next time, okay?”

Raj laughed, shaking his head. “No promises.”

As the evening went on, Gayatri found more opportunities to tease Raj about the incident. Each time, she’d throw in a playful remark, keeping him on his toes but in a comfortable, familiar way.

“So, Raj,” she said at one point, her tone light, “how many more admirers are you planning to chase away tonight?”

Raj, now used to her teasing, grinned. “As many as it takes. I’m on full-time duty tonight.”

Gayatri laughed. “Full-time duty, huh? Well, I hope Siva’s paying you well for this job.”

Raj’s grin widened. “Protecting you is payment enough.”

Gayatri paused, surprised by the sincerity in his voice. But before the moment could get too serious again, she smirked. “Careful, Raj. You’re starting to sound like one of those boys.”

Raj shook his head, laughing. “I’ll leave the flirting to them. I’m just here to keep you safe.”

Gayatri smiled, her expression soft for a brief moment. “That’s why you’re different.”

Raj met her gaze, and for a moment, the playful teasing between them gave way to something deeper. They shared a quiet understanding, an unspoken warmth that hung between them.

But before the mood could shift too much, Gayatri nudged him playfully again. “Just don’t scare off too many, okay? I like knowing I’m still turning heads.”

Raj chuckled, shaking his head. “I’ll try to control myself.”

Later in the evening, Gayatri introduced Raj to one of her old friends from college, Anjali. She was a lively woman, full of energy, and she immediately took a liking to Raj. Her eyes lingered on him a bit longer than expected.

“So, Raj,” Anjali said with a playful grin, “you’re here to protect Gayatri from all these flirty men, huh?”

Raj smiled, feeling a bit embarrassed by her directness. “Just doing my job.”

Anjali’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “A loyal protector, I see. You’re doing a good job. Too bad you’re not taken yet.” Before Raj could respond, Anjali walked away with a teasing smile, leaving him flustered.

Gayatri leaned in close, whispering with a grin, “Looks like you’ve always had a thing for married women. What do you think of Anjali?” Raj groaned, covering his face with his hands, his cheeks turning red. “Bhabhi, please! I can’t handle this!”

Gayatri laughed, giving him a playful nudge. “Good answer.”

As the night wore on and the laughter and music continued, Raj couldn’t help but reflect on the day. His protectiveness over Gayatri had come naturally, and while he enjoyed teasing her, there was something deeper in the way he cared for her. She was more than just his best friend’s wife—she had become someone important to him, someone he felt responsible for.

Raj grinned, shaking his head. “Only if you promise not to bring up those boys again.”

Gayatri laughed softly, nudging him as they walked toward the car. “No promises, Raj. No promises.”

As the evening drew to a close, Gayatri and Raj found themselves standing on the balcony, watching the festivities from afar. The air was cool, and the sound of laughter and music drifted up to where they stood.

Gayatri leaned against the railing, her eyes soft with reflection. “This was a good trip,” she said quietly, her voice losing some of its earlier playfulness. “It’s been fun having you here with me.”

Raj nodded, his eyes focused on the lights below. “Yeah, it’s been nice. I’m glad I could come.”

There was a moment of silence, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was the kind of silence that existed between two people who knew each other well enough to not always need words.

After a long day at the wedding, Gayatri and Raj found themselves alone on the quiet terrace of the guest house. The distant hum of music from the wedding festivities was fading, leaving behind a peaceful silence that wrapped around them like a comforting blanket. The night air was cool, and the stars sparkled in the sky above them.

Breaking the silence, Gayatri spoke softly. “You know, Raj... I don’t think I’ve ever thanked you properly.”

Raj looked at her, a bit surprised. “Thank you. For what, Bhabhi?”

“For being there for me,” she replied, her voice gentle. “Especially this trip. You didn’t have to come. I know Siva couldn’t make it, but you could’ve easily said no. Yet here you are, making everything easier for me, as always.”

Raj shifted uncomfortably, not sure how to respond. “It’s no big deal, Bhabhi. You know I’m always here to help.”

Gayatri smiled, but her gaze was serious. “No, Raj. It is a big deal. You’ve been more than a friend to us. To me. Whenever things get hard or awkward, you’re always there, stepping in like you can sense it.”

Raj was silent for a moment, the weight of her words sinking in. “I’m just trying to do what I can,” he said quietly.

Gayatri’s eyes softened as she looked at him. “But not everyone would. You’ve gone above and beyond, Raj. I’ve noticed it for a while now.”

Raj didn’t know what to say, so he simply smiled in response. The air between them was filled with the quiet acknowledgment of something deeper—a connection that went beyond mere friendship, though neither would say it aloud.

Gayatri squeezed his hand gently before pulling away, creating a distance between them that felt both necessary and heartbreaking. She stood up, looking down at him with a sad smile.

“Thank you, Raj,” she said quietly, her voice filled with a mixture of gratitude and sorrow. “For being here. For protecting me from the boys. For everything.”

Raj watched her walk away, the weight of their conversation settling heavily on his shoulders. As she disappeared into the house, he leaned back, staring up at the stars.
