The next morning, Rashmi woke up and got dressed. She opened her bag and she recollected sreya’s words.

                            ” They enjoyed seeing yours….It’s a compliment…..”

She looked at a sleeveless training tank in her bag and pulled it out. She wore the black training tank which ended right at her waist and wore and a black pant. Her arms were exposed and she felt slightly awkward as she would be out jogging in the campus. She always wore them in her space and never outside.

Sreya came out of her room and smiled. She stared at Rashmi.
“ What happened didi?”
Sreya pressed her lips inside and then smiled and said,” Nothing. Let’s go?”
Rashmi blushed unsure if it meant she thought she was doing it on purpose.

They started the jog at the hostel. Sreya noticed Rashmi struggling slightly with the run as the pains have still not sufficed. She jogged slowly and spoke to her, “ So rashu, Have you spoke to any of your classmates?”
“ Yeah. Apart from sanju, I spoke to Vaishnavi and ananya…..”
“ Nahi baba, boys … did you speak to anyone?”
Rashmi didn’t understand why she asked so precisely. “ I did speak to two boys in sanju’s gang. Sunny and jatin”
“ Nice. You should speak. That’s what opens perspectives.”
Rashmi didn’t understand what she meant.

They reached the ground. Sreya said, “ Lets do our exercises over there.”
She pointed towards a tree and there was a kho-kho court where it was empty.
“ Didi, it is too away from people na. At this early in the morning, won’t there be snakes or something?”
Sreya smiled to herself. “ Yeah yeah, true. There can be some snakes…..”
Sreya waited for her to speak as she searched for another spot.

“ Didi, why not go to the same place like we did on Saturday? Searching for a spot itself is taking time”
Sreya smiled to herself again and said okay.

They went towards the goal post and there were few football players warming up and few general people to the other side. Rashmi took the same spot which was opposite to the people exercising towards the corner flags.

They started with stretching and as she stretched , from one corner of the eye, Rashmi looked towards the corner flags. She could see a few taking a peek every now and then.
Rashmi smiled to herself.
When they were doing the skipping, she started noticing how everytime she jumped, the tank jumped up and down as her navel played hide and seek with a person watching it.

She heard one of the guy say, “ Damn broo!!”
She blushed so much, sreya could see her face turn red. She smiled to herself.
Rashmi felt it was too much and told sreya, “ I’ll have some water….”
She went to the indoor sports plaza and stood at the water.

She took the glass and had some water. Meanwhile , a tall guy stood beside her.
He was brown skinned , had lot of hairs on his hands and a full beard which was very uneven. He was dressed in tracks and a half hands tshirt. He wore a turban and had a khada on his right hand.
He seemed like a typical Punjabi guy.

He almost towered her standing right beside her. “ He must be 6’1 atleast “ she thought.
She handed the glass to him. He didn’t take it and asked, “ Hi, you speak english right?”
Rashmi said yes. “ Thanks, I’m new to this college and I want to meet the Football coach, he still hasn’t come and I want to ask the lady sweeping his room that. She doesn’t understand English or hindi. Can you help?”

Rashmi looked around. There were not many people in the indoor complex.
He instantly said, “ I asked one person, he just made fun of me. It’s those turban jokes.”

Rashmi instantly said, “ oh I’m sorry. Some people can be very insensitive. Sure I’ll come.”
They climbed the stairs and reached the first floor. “ I’m aman by the way, M.Tech first year computers”
Rashmi knew he was older but didn’t think he was a M.Tech student.
“ I’m Rashmi, B.Tech first year, computers too”
“ Oh nice. Kaisi lagi college?”
Rashmi sensed him switching to hindi. Despite knowing hindi, she always never had friends to speak it with and here a guy from Punjab needed help and relied on her. It boosted her confidence.
“ Achi hai. Aapko?”
“ Theek lagi, dekhna hoga … abhi toh bas 1 hafta hi hua”
She smiled. “ yahan koi help hi nahi karta hai….very strange.”
Rashmi smiled and said, “ maybe unhe hindi nahi aati….”
“ Oh….”
They reached the room. Rashmi asked her for the coach and she told he will be here at 9.
“ Aman, aap 9 bhaje aa jana yahan. Coach rahenge….”
“Oh cool, you saved the day haha”
They both laughed. They started going down and aman asked, “ Rashmi, aap kahan se ho?”
“ Hyderabad”
“ Main delhi…”
“ Oh maine sochi Punjab”
Aman laughed and said, “ Arey nahi yaar. My family and all stays in delhi”
“ Oh nice”
He sounded extrovertic and had the Punjabi energy in his voice everytime he spoke. It made her smile. She waved him a bye and walked towards the ground.
She was feeling good about talking to different kinds of people in the campus, being friendly just like the others were , without any extra thoughts in head.

Sreya stood outside. “ took you long.” She said.
She turned back to point at aman but he was not in sight. “ I was helping someone. He couldn’t speak to the cleaning person and so I helped him.”
Sreya smiled, “ good, you are talking to people, especially boys …”
Rashmi suddenly realised and kept quiet. They walked back.
“ I haven’t grown up in such an environment didi”
Sreya nodded. “ It’s okay. I know, I can see my sister in you”
“ You have a sister?”
“ Yeah she is just one year younger to me. She is very quiet around people especially around boys.
It’s the general stigma that is taught when in college that talking to boys is seen too much and decides your character, blah blah blah.”
Rashmi forced a smile. “ I’m not telling you do something but talking with boys is something that you need not think too much. They are human and we are human. Don’t live in a closed circle with limited opinions and restrictions. It kills you dear.”
Rashmi listened attentively. “ I’m glad you are not like my sister who was even shy to reciprocate a hi, that’s how unsocial she has become over the years that it scares me sometimes. But, I can sense the upbringing you might have had because of your financial conditions or maybe your family, but don’t limit yourself to confined opinions. That would be my only advice rashu”
Rashmi thought about what she said and asked, “ But it can be dangerous too right didi?”
Sreya smiled. “ You hit 18 right? This is when you own for the consequences of your actions. You learn. If you don’t learn at this age, life will teach you in a later stage when it’s definitely not the time to explore. It’s just the raw truth. This applies to career and personal choices as well.”
“ you should think about your actions but never regret decisions taken after thought. We learn at this age rashu. And also stop feeling guilty about every girly thought you have. It’s beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of, okay?”

Rashmi understood she meant about the sleeveless tank. “ So when you said it opens perspectives, what does it mean didi?”
“ Well, I’ve had friends that are girls. All they talked about was about other girls and gossip etc. It was fun but at the same time, I never found the comfort I needed with them. It’s different with guys. They understand things differently and are more mature. It’s a balance that is needed so you don’t loose the feminine side and at the same time not be too naïve in this world.”

They stayed quiet for a while. “ Too much life lessons, eh?” said sreya.
They burst into laughter and as they reached the hostel, Rashmi said,” Didi, I’ll think about what you said. It makes sense to me, and thank you for thinking about me so much”
Sreya hugged her, “ The guys at the ground thought a lot more …. “
Rashmi blushed again. “ Damn, your cheeks work so fast … “ said sreya.
They went into the hostel.
Rashmi still seemed to be in thought as they climbed the stairs. Sreya said before they entered their room,” Be honest about one thing.”
“ What is it didi?”
“ Did you enjoy them staring at you?”
She didn’t respond and looked down.
“ See, you need not tell me….just be honest to yourself and one thing. Be cautious and be careful, its really important. But never be guilty for feeling things we are supposed to. Don’t stress too much.”
She tapped her cheek and went inside. Rashmi smiled knowing someone talked to her about it without making it awkward.

She had a braid and wore a red kurta and blue jeans to college that day. She was involved in all the classes and barely made time for her friends and towards the end of the last class, she noticed sanju, Vaishnavi missing in the class. She asked ananya and she said they bunked the class with sunny and jatin. Ananya didn’t want to miss the coding class and so she stayed.

They walked towards the canteen later and saw them near the indoor sports plaza.
Sunny and sanju were talking to a girl and jatin and Vaishnavi were walking towards them.
“ What happened again?” asked ananya.
“ That girl texted sanju it seems that sunny was not responding to her.” Said jatin.
Rashmi was shocked again. “ Who is she?”
“ she is Aishwarya from section 8. Sunny texted her for some notes last week and she texted him repeatedly after that showing interest. When sunny didn’t respond over the weekend, she texted sanju asking about him. “ said jatin.
Rashmi was surprised seeing how casually the girls openly admit their crush and even admit it in front of other girls.
“ Let’s go. They will handle it and come back.”

As they waited for the order, jatin asked Rashmi,” Rashmi, we planned on staying for 3 hours and then leave. Do you want to join us?”
Vaishnavi interrupted, “ Why won’t she. She is part of our group.”
Rashmi had a half hearted smile but she said okay. Sunny and sanju returned but no one spoke anything about the Aishwarya issue as if everyone knew what went.
Rashmi was curious but she didn’t feel like she still had the freedom to do that around them.

They finished their lunch and then went to the open auditorium and got seated on the benches.
“ So how is your second day Rashmi?” asked sunny.
She looked at him. He had a happy face as if there was nothing bothering him at all and he waited for an answer curiously.
“ Yeah it was good. The subjects are slightly difficult though:
“ That’s why I don’t take that much stress.”
Sanju hit his hand again. “ Just pass marks works for you. Not for everyone. Plus rashu is a topper.”
Rashmi always hated people using that word but she just gave a guilty smile.
“ Ha, you people study and tell us the important topics and we will study those for exams.” Said jatin.
“ How convenient guys!! You should be locked inside your car without AC in the summer heat” said ananya.
“ Ananya’s 5th different way to kill!” said sunny. They all laughed.
Vaishnavi turned to Rashmi and said,” Ananya says random things and sometimes she tells different ideas as to how to kill people. “
“ Stop it guys!!” said ananya.
“ Even RGV can use some of her ideas” said jatin and ananya went behind him and hit him on the head.
Rashmi smiled for real enjoying the joke.
“ Wow your smile is beautiful” said sunny. Almost out of nowhere, he realised it slipped.
Everyone at the table heard it. Rashmi’s cheeks blushed again. Vaishnavi and jatin supressed their smile and sanju said, “ yeah, ananya herself can become a director!”
She tried to divert the topic and everyone realised it. Rashmi’s heart beat faster but she remained calm, eyes down. They talked a lot and finally Vaishnavi asked, “ Rashmi, you say some topic. You have been silent”
“ I’m a boring person. Sorry.”
Jatin asked,” Do you know how to drive a car?”
“ No. I do know scooty a bit.”
“ Oh. We definitely need someone to drive when drunk in our batch.” Jatin said to the group.
Rashu was surprised to hear that. She again kept her questions to herself.
‘ Do you own a car?” she asked jatin.
“ Not me. Sunny has his own.”
She nodded. Vaishnavi said,” Sunny is a rich kid. His grandfather gifted him a car on his 18th birthday”
“ C’mon guys!” said sunny.
Vaishnavi continued,” His grandfather owns Bhavishya group of colleges and his father currently manages it. His uncle is the MLA of the nearest constituency too. Don’t ever lend him money.”
Everyone laughed and Rashmi did too. She realised everyone else at the table were well financially yet grounded. She found it amazing how sunny despite being so rich lives a normal life at college and felt happy they accepted her into this group.
