2017

DV University

Dressed in a light blue chudidhar with a white chunni and white leggin, Rashmi stood in front of the college. It took her a lot of effort to get into this college for a computer science seat. She had also given the exam for a free seat which is only applicable for top 5 people in the exam above the 90% cut off. She finally made it.

She was 250 kms away from home but she remembers how happy her dad was that she could get a seat in such a prestigious institute and no tuition fee for all the 4years.
She knew how much it meant to him as he was struggling to keep up with his job and the financial condition they were in. His memory has been fading and she knew given all these conditions, if she wanted to pursue engineering, she had to score a seat here.
The University was the most diverse with people from all over India studying there, some foreigners too and the exposure would be something that she felt would help her achieve her dream.

Living a minimal life throughout her 18 years life she never complained but always felt a pang of jealousy whenever her classmates casually poked at her second hand textbooks in college.
The classmates that barely scored pass marks but still got phones to show off whilst she scored the top ranks and still never got any materialistic appreciation. Yet, she never complained.

But she decided this is not how she will live her life. Materialistic comfort should be earned and she decided she will. “ This is the place I spend the next 4 years. I never complained about my family but I wish they saw the sacrifices I made quietly. Here on, I will write my own destiny and get the life I want” She thought to herself and felt proud.

A hand tapped her. It was Anusha, her sister.
“ Excited rashu?”
“ yeah akka. I was just looking at the board.”
The luggage was put out of the car by shiva. He came next to Anusha and stood.
“ Thanks akka and thank you shiva gaaru”
Shiva laughed. “ C’mon, I’m going to marry Anusha in 2 months and you still haven’t called me through relation!”
Rashmi smiled. “ She will call you after the marriage maybe” said Anusha.
Rashmi felt embarrassed and closed her face with her palm. “ chalo, my sister is shy now…I told you she is introverted!”
Rashmi was embarrassed again. “ Ayyo, stop it akka”
Shiva laughed and then said,” chalo okay. I’ll make her suffer after the wedding. Unless she calls me by relation, I will not enter the house.”
Rashmi understood which custom he was referring to.
“ Why will I do that ?”
Anusha interrupted,” Of course you have to do it ra. I have a brother and don’t have any sisters. We grew up like sisters and I feel you should be the one”
Rashmi knew she was right.

Ever since young, she always went to family gatherings and her first question would be,” where is Anusha akka?” and they would talk hours and hours about movies, serials and pop singers.
She was her open space and thought of her as a sibling than a cousin.
It was only in the last two years since she started working that she moved to a different city and had a busy life. Rashmi herself was in +2 and couldn’t complain. But she felt very happy when Anusha told her mom and dad that she would take her to the college. The luggage and all the 250 km travel accompanied by her.

She was later told by Anusha that shiva, her fiancée would also accompany them. Although she was disappointed with the latest news, the drive was all smiles and jokes. Shiva was a constant chatter and always mocked one or the other thing. The jokes were hilarious at times that even Rashmi sitting in the back seat who was quiet at times, although tried to supress her laughter ended up cracking.

She indeed enjoyed the ride and recounted how she always saw Anusha as her inspiration.
She never once pressured her too much about education and assured her she was talented and amazing. Even when she left to Bangalore for her job in a UK based product company, she noticed the respect her relatives circle had for what she achieved.

It was only 4 months ago that she broke the news to her that her marriage is fixed. She was shocked to hear it was going to be a love marriage. Rashmi’s atha and mama were always strict about things like love and marriages specifically concerned about caste. They had a history of boycotting few people just for marrying into a different caste or just love marriage.

She never thought Anusha would take such a step. Shiva came from a lower caste, a caste that anusha’s grandparents wouldn’t want to shake hands.

But at the engagement last month, she saw how they greeted each other so welcoming. Perhaps, it was because shiva’s father was a government doctor  and shiva himself worked in anusha’s company as a team lead. The impact money had on things which people clung to for decades had just made the invisible line evaporate.

They were getting married in 2 months and she felt happy for her sister. Her fiancée cared so much for even her sister and felt her sister was so lucky.

“ Okay akka. I’ll do it.” Rashmi said.
“ It’s not like you were given an option!” Anusha said.
They laughed.

Shiva took the sweater in the car and handed Rashmi.
“ I’m not feeling cold now”
“ It’s not some item to disappear all of a sudden rashu. You recovered but you still have to be careful.
The temperature here is too cold in the evenings and too hot in the mornings and afternoons I heard. No balance.”
“ Haa akka I too read that”
Shiva then said,” Well it’s 5.30 already. Let’s get you checked into the hostel. We can make it back home before 12”
Rashu put on the sweater tying her long hairs into a pony and carried the trolly and a bag.
Anusha took another trolly and shiva carried a huge bag.
Rashu whispered to Anusha,” It’s a huge bag. I feel sorry for him”
Anusha smiled and told her,” He is used to it rashu. He missed his gym anyways today where he lifts bigger weights. Let him carry this as an alternative”
The sisters laughed.
“ I can hear you both!!” Shiva said.

Rashu made the gate entry and they walked into the college. It was a huge campus. She could see people sitting on the benches and talking to each other. They reached the girl’s hostel and went to the reception. After the formalities, the lady at the reception asked,” May I know the reason for delay?”
Anusha replied,” She was unwell and couldn’t travel because of viral fever.”
The lady said,” Oh, you must have missed the first week of college then. If you don’t feel well, do let us know we will take care of you….”
Rashu smiled and took the key to the first floor. Shiva waited at the lobby and a woman carried the luggage to first floor.

Anusha and Rashmi went to the room and opened it.
It was a three sharing room but there were only 2 private rooms in it. “ You said it’s a three sharing room?”
Rashmi asked the lady and she said,” The common hall has a bed and there are two bedrooms with attached bathrooms and a common bathroom”
Anusha asked,” In such a university, you publicize it as a three sharing room and do this??”
“ Madam, first floor rooms are like that. These were built long time ago and that’s how students adjusted.”
Rashmi felt sad that her comfort was compromised again.

But Anusha was angry. Rashmi said,” akka, I’ll speak to the warden and get this sorted. Don’t worry.”
Anusha said,” Don’t be too liberal, ask her and don’t compromise for less. We are paying the hostel fees.”
She knew Rashmi was never the conflict person and doubted if she would ask the warden for real.

“ Madam, If you came on first day, maybe you could have taken the private bedroom”

Anusha walked to the lobby and called for the warden. Warden was explaining herself and Rashmi then said,” Akka, you have to reach home before it’s late. I will definitely ask…”
Anusha knew she had a point and warning the warden went towards the lobby again.

Before she took the turn towards the lobby, Anusha turned to Rashmi. She let out a breath and said,” sorry that I screamed so much on your first day at a new place. But I wanted to happily send you to college”
Rashmi smiled.
Anusha opened her handbag and pulled out a box. It was wrapped as a gift.
“ We wanted to give you this as a gift last week on your birthday. But shiva couldn’t find me to give this to me and you got sick in the evening, so we had to take you to the hospital.”
Rashmi recollected how Anusha and shiva and anusha’s parents came to their house and spent all day watching tv and talking. Too much soft drinks spoilt her health and she started feeling cold by evening. She feared her 18th birthday would go without the cake cutting and she was right.

Rashmi accepted the gift and hugged Anusha. “ Study well and have a bright future ra”
“Thank you akka”. She hugged her tight.
They went to the lobby and shiva waited.

“ Okay madam, have a wonderful college life and haa….Don’t bunk too many classes”
They laughed.
“ You have to maintain proper attendance na again. When you come for the marriage, you will miss 3 days classes again and you already missed one week. So plan accordingly, okay?”
“ Yeah sure shiva gaaru”
He was again tired of it. “ Nothing can be done of you…..chalo then, anu let’s go”
Anusha and shiva left the campus as she waved bye to them and Rashmi took the stairs to the first floor.

Her roomates were not there , so just sat on the bed and looked at the gift. Her curiosity was always impossible to tame and she started unpacking it.

Xiaomi redmi 4

She couldn’t believe it. A smartphone.
Her friends always carried one to college in tenth grade and she only had a qwerty keypad phone in her +2. She couldn’t believe Anusha and shiva cared so much for her.

She switched it on. Started exploring the phone and installing apps. She connected to the hostel wifi.
She finally installed whatsapp. It felt different, she no longer had to ask her dad for phone to message her friends to send important study notes.

She searched anusha’s number and gave a video call.

Anusha picked the phone and the image was grainy.
“ Hi akka”
“ Hi ra….Did you like the gift?”
“ Thank you so much akka. You gave me the best gift”
“ Thank Shiva for that. He is the one who suggested it and bought it. I just did the packing haha”
“ Thank you shiva gaaru…”
The voice cracked and they couldn’t hear Rashmi.

“ Hello??”
“ Yes akka, am I audible?”
“ Hello???”

The travelling was causing the trouble and suddenly the call got cut.
Rashu thought it’s best not to disturb while they are on road. She thought she would record and send a voice note.

Shiva parked the car alongside the highway in front of a family restaurant.
Anusha had to use the washroom and she rushed towards the washrooms. He smiled as she almost ran.
He thought about making a call and pulled out his phone and it was switched off.
“ Shouldn’t have played music on the phone”
He took anusha’s phone and opened it and dialled home.

“ Hey dad, we will be home in 3 hours. Just stopped alongside a restaurant for some refreshing”
He spoke for a while and then cut the call. The notification had a message from rashu.
He opened the chat and saw that it was a voice recording. He played the recording.

“Thank you so much shiva bavagaaru. Na life lo best gift ichinanduku, nijamga chala ante chala nachindi. And it’s really special coming from you. Thank you akka and….akka just wrapping e chesindhi kadha, so akka ki thanks cancel….haha…..thank you bava!”

( Translation: Thank you so much shiva bavagaaru. This is the best gift of my life, I totally loved it and it’s really special coming from you. Thank you akka and…..wait….akka just wrapped the gift right?
so no thanks to akka….haha….thank you bava!)
