Chapter 10: The Risk

Two months into their affair, the inevitable almost happened. Riya's mother decided to visit a neighbor in Rohan's building, choosing the exact moment Riya was sneaking back to her own apartment at 2 AM.

Riya, her clothes disheveled, her lips swollen from kissing, froze at the sight of her mother in the hallway.

"Riya?" her mother said, her eyes taking in her daughter's appearance. "Where have you been?"
"Couldn't sleep," Riya managed. "Went for a walk."
"At 2 AM? In this neighborhood?"

Before Riya could answer, Rohan's door opened. He was shirtless, his hair tousled. "Riya, you forgot your..."

He stopped at the sight of her mother. For a terrible moment, no one spoke.

Then Rohan recovered. "Ah, Auntie. Riya was helping me with a work problem. We lost track of time."

The explanation was thin, but her mother, perhaps unwilling to face the alternative, accepted it with a tight nod. "Come, Riya. It's late."

Back in their apartment, her mother didn't ask questions. But her silence was more accusing than any interrogation.
The close call forced a conversation Riya and Rohan had been avoiding.

"This can't continue like this," Riya said the next evening in his apartment. "We almost got caught."
"What do you want to do?" Rohan asked, his expression unreadable.
"I don't know. But we need to decide. Are we just... this?" She gestured between them. "Or something real?"
Rohan took her hands. "It's real for me. But you know my... history. My nature."
"The hunger," she said softly.
He nodded. "I can't promise it won't return. That I won't... need more."
It was the honesty she both appreciated and feared. "What if I'm enough?"
He kissed her gently. "You're more than enough. But this isn't about you. It's about me. The broken parts."

They decided to continue, but more carefully. Riya began looking for her own apartment—a declaration of independence that would also provide privacy. Rohan supported her, both emotionally and financially, though she refused his money.

Then came the day Riya found the perfect flat—a small but charming one-bedroom in a nearby building. As she signed the lease, she felt a mix of excitement and fear. This was a step toward a life of her own making, but also a step that made her relationship with Rohan more real, more exposed.

The night she got the keys, they celebrated in the empty apartment with takeout food and a bottle of wine. After eating, Rohan made love to her on the bare floor, their bodies moving together in the moonlight streaming through the un-curtained windows.

Afterward, as they lay together, Rohan said something that surprised her.
"I want you to meet Arif."
Riya propped herself up on one elbow. "Are you sure?"
"He's coming for Eid. I want you to be there." He traced her cheek. "I want you in my life, Riya. All of it."
Tears filled her eyes. "I want that too."
