Following two weeks of orientation, Komal joined a team of four other inspectors and set out in earnest in her new position. She was one of three women. Gita and Laxmi, who both looked to be middle aged and married, specialized in questions dealing with nutrition. Komal quickly assessed the women and Punit, noting that the women were married, had older kids, and were hoping for the next few years to go by fast so they could retire.

Punit was a slight man of average looks around 50, and he was comfortable with his status as a gay man. He had a live-in partner, and was all around a pretty pleasant guy with a great sense of humor. Komal figured that Mahesh probably got the job at such a young age because of affirmative action. But that didn't matter to her as he was at once bright, pleasant, sensitive, and down to earth. And, what really made Mahesh a pleasure to know was the fact that like Komal, he was an zealous follower of baseball and sports in general. What's more, Mahesh had a mildly sarcastic sense of humor, which gradually revealed itself as Komal got to know him better.
