Chapter 39 – The Gift and the Pull
Prem didn’t question it. Not really.
When Nivi said Rohan had helped get the Kia Seltos delivered so fast — he just smiled.
Grateful. Trusted. No flicker of suspicion. Just pure joy, Nivi telling him all truths.
He took her on a ride immediately — out of the office parking, onto the open roads, windows down, evening breeze rushing in.
The new car — sleek, powerful, air-conditioned cool against the Chennai heat.
Nivi beside him, watching his face light up.
They discussed how different it was from the old Swift. Smooth acceleration — no jerk. Quiet engine — no rattle.
Space — comfortable seats. Features — touchscreen glowing.
Prem admitted, voice soft, eyes on the road but glancing at her often.
“I was torn. Felt you didn’t return love… maybe irritated with me. Because of all these years..”
He paused, hand tightening on wheel.
“Let me tell you honestly — I’m paranoid that you may get hurt by leechers, predators. So I wanted to protect you. But never knew it could feel like a cage for you.”
Nivi looked at him — surprised he admitted it.
“How did you find out then?”
Prem smiled small. “Realised somehow.. Better never than late, right…”
“But this present — assures me you value me so much. Our love is still there.”
Nivi's heart twisted — guilt and warmth.
“I never stopped loving you.”
“I had disappointments… but never wanted to make an issue.”
“I just chose now what I wanted — a bit of freedom for my goal. Hope you understand.”
Prem nodded — hand reaching for hers, squeezing gently.
"You go out, do what you want.. Chase your dreams..."
They had lunch out — small seaside restaurant, family favorite.
Picked Aara from college — surprise new car.
Kid squealed — "Appa's big car! Shiny!" Climbed in back, touching everything.
Family moment — light, happy.
Night at Rohan’s luxury apartment.
They showed him the car — parked gleaming in garage.
Rohan, Nivi, Prem, Aara — went for a night trip.
City lights twinkling. Ice cream stops.
Aara asleep in back with Nivi.
Rohan driving the new Kia — Prem passenger, grinning.
Laughter easy.
Next day — routine.
Rohan took Nivi in his Mercedes to office.
Prem in the new Kia — still grinning ear to ear.
On the way — traffic slow, giving space.
Rohan started conversation, casual.
See, it's that simple. look how happy prem was yesterday and today with his grin... Returning love is an Art
Nivi giggled
Rohan said.. :It's like how girls expect love via little things.. Men expect too.
But never know what they expect.. Instead they seek in verbal."
Nivi realised what he said.
The car she gifted had been the love symbol now.
She knows after her one night with Rohan it's not easy to get back to Prem.
She is confused, not able to process her surrender.
Prem turning good to her at this point had really been hard on her.
It pushed her further into guilt.
If this continued she feared she might slip out truth which she wanted to forget or at least hide from him.
Even until this point she was not sure of what she want..
To continue affair or consider that as one time or break her friendship with Rohan..
But before she herself decide Prem’s sudden change caused her panic.
Rohan saw the silence in Nivi.
He slowly asked her.
Rohan: "Nivi, what happened to you?"
Nivi: "Nothing, I was thinking.. I want to be just his wife and be loyal to him…
I don't think we should continue.."
Rohan: "Continue what?"
Nivi: "Continue whatever."
Rohan: "You mean friendship, business, and new found friendship with secrets?"
Nivi said she could not process things.. "I'm glad that you gave me time to heal, process, and get an answer to Prem through some idea like buying car, but I really don't know how to take this forward.. I feel myself some low…"
Rohan: "Okay, let's quit.. Quit all — friendship, business, and lust/sex. But can you answer me following things?"
Nivi: She looked at his face and asked, "What?"
Rohan: "Say you are quitting business — what will you tell your husband?"
"The truth?"
Nivi: "No."
Rohan: "Then a lie? like business not suited for you or not able to manage? Will he get convinced when our business is going very good?"
Nivi looked puzzled.
Rohan: "He will just get more doubt and push you for truth.."
Second question —
let's assume you quit my friendship and not business. This work is not possible without communication and understanding… won't Prem find suspicious with my uninvolvement or we not speaking to each other?"
Nivi: "He will, given his nature.."
Rohan: "He would find the truth or pin a suspect of even greater side."
Nivi now realised she cannot quit the business or friendship.
Third question
let's assume you quit business and friendship because you are done with it and going to look after Aara or Prem.. A solid reason which Prem will buy instantly… Are you okay with shutting your long pending dream to run a business?"
Nivi: "No."
Fourth question — let's assume you still quit and convince Prem you will start after a year or so? Will you be able to pull these many clients because it all came through me? You need to earn your name for some more time. Practically, is that not right?
Nivi realised it's not easy to break everything with him except sex with Rohan..
Rohan continued.. "Now you may know the answer for it. It's easy to quit but the aftermath you have to face is large. My suggestion would be — just focus on your growth.. Friendship, love, lust can be part of you if you want it for you.. That's all I can say."
Nivi wanted to thank him but she didn't open her mouth — but she got clarity.
No need to worry about the past — just go ahead and seal her future for better.
And Rohan is never pushy.. He respects me, adores me and waits for my words, he will understand....
Maybe other thoughts — it can wait.
Once her mind realized the burden had gone — a deep breath and wide smile came through her.
She was ready to continue everything except sex — she was also happy that even after all happenings Rohan never seemed to demand bodily pleasure again from her..
Rohan didn't miss to see her widened smile…
Rohan: "Your face glows so much these days.. I have never seen this side of yours. It actually gives me an impression that you are a fun and jovial person and very talkative."
Nivi: "Is it? My friends back in college used to say I was that bright, glowy, jovial.. I'm hearing those words again now."
Rohan: "Then it means you are finding yourself back.. You got yourself back.. The glow I have not seen ever since I met you can be seen in these two weeks especially after our last Bangalore visit."
Nivi looked at him — silent for a moment, smile fading slightly.
The truth unspoken.
But Rohan knew the value of silence and the weight of her inner thoughts.
He clearly knew she wanted to break up with him.. It should be just a one night stand.. For her…
He knew how to twist it..
His mind pinned a calculation on a new game.. Evolved..
He continued.
Rohan: "In 3 days we have to go to Bangalore again…"
Nivi was lost in thought — she wanted to say no.. she feared if things reappeared again? The night repeats again..
Before she could process, Rohan opened his mouth again.
Rohan: "Call Prem this time.. Let him come with us, know how we work.. This time I will make it a point to discuss it there in the client's place instead of by phone so that he will know we are really working .. and you are pulling him into your world.. He may consider that as a continuous way of yours attempting to prove his love.. This can push his bed needs for a few more days.. He will wait until you recover completely."
Nivi looked at his face — she could not read his thoughts but felt very warm of his support.
She reached out her hand and caught his left hand and said thanks..
Nivi bought it.. Unknowing what new chapters he had for her in Bangalore..
Prem didn’t question it. Not really.
