He couldn’t have gone further. Not after everything they had been through. Not after he had already betrayed her. And yet, as he lay in his bed, his chest tightening, he realized that he had been on the edge of something dangerous.
“If she hadn’t stopped him, he might have kept going. And what if he had crossed the line forever?”
“What would she think of me then? Would she ever forgive me?”
His fingers curled into the bedsheets, his body tense with the weight of the question. He couldn’t afford to make that mistake again. He couldn’t afford to lose her.
But then, as he reflected on the moment, something began to shift in his mind. She hadn’t gotten angry. She hadn’t screamed, hadn’t pushed him away. She had said, “Thank you, Ravi,” but her voice hadn’t been harsh. It hadn’t been filled with anger.
There had been no fury in her gaze. She had simply... stopped. Gently, calmly, without making a scene.
“She’s been so patient with me, he realized. So patient, even after everything. Even after all I’ve done... she’s still letting me in. She’s still giving me a chance to prove myself.”
The way she had let him sit so close, the way her eyes had softened when he helped her, she had been vulnerable in that moment, and she had trusted him. Even now, Ravi couldn’t quite understand how she could still trust him after what he had done. But she had. She had let him care for her, even in the smallest of ways.
“I’m not perfect, he thought, his heart swelling with a mix of guilt and gratitude. But I want to be. I will be. For her. I’ll prove myself to her, no matter how long it takes.”
He thought back to when he had served her lunch, to the way she had smiled at him, that soft, fleeting smile that had made his heart flutter. Even now, he could feel the warmth of her smile in his chest.
“I love her so much. More than I’ve ever loved anyone. She’s everything to me, and I want to make things right.”
It wasn’t going to be easy. She wasn’t going to forgive him overnight. But there was a hope, a fragile but undeniable hope, that maybe, just maybe, things could get better between them.
“And maybe,” Ravi thought, his heart heavy with love for her, “maybe one day she’ll understand that what I did... wasn’t me. It wasn’t who I am. I love her. I love her with all my heart. But I was weak. I was tempted, but I’ll never make that mistake again.”
As he lay there, staring up at the ceiling, Ravi thought about how much she meant to him. How everything in his life felt insignificant compared to her. She was more than just the woman he loved.
She was the person who made him feel alive. She was the one who made him a better man, whether he deserved it or not.
“I’ll keep trying,” he thought. “I’ll keep showing her how much I love her. I’ll keep proving to her that I’m worthy of her love.”
He exhaled deeply, his body finally relaxing as the weight of the day eased away, replaced by a quiet sense of hope. “I will make this right. I will. And I’ll do whatever it takes.”
