In that moment, it felt like the whole world held its breath.
“I think I… sprained my ankle,” she whispered, her voice soft but taut with pain, each word a quiet plea that seemed to hang in the air between them.
Her words hit him like a sudden shock, a jolt of panic that made his chest tighten. A sprain? That could be so much worse, she could be hurting, and the thought twisted something inside him.
“Didi, should I call an ambulance?” Ravi asked, his voice tight with concern. He could feel his thoughts racing.
She was so fragile in this moment, he couldn’t afford to take chances. His heart pounded in his ears as worry flashed through him. What if it was worse than a sprain? What if she was hiding how much pain she was in?
She shook her head, the delicate motion betraying her own uncertainty.
She cradled her ankle with both hands, fingers trembling, as though trying to hold herself together. “No… I don’t think it’s that bad,” she murmured, but the fragility in her voice made him feel like she was slipping through his fingers. “It doesn’t feel broken, just… maybe a sprain. I’ll be okay. But... please, don’t leave me here alone.”
The soft, trembling plea in her voice went straight to his chest, unraveling something inside him. Her vulnerability, the quiet trust in her eyes, hit him in a way he hadn’t expected. It made the weight of his own guilt feel even heavier, pressing against him like a storm he couldn’t outrun.
He wasn’t sure if it was the way she was looking at him, or the delicate way she leaned into him, but something in him broke free from the walls he’d built up. She needed him. He couldn’t be the one to walk away now.
He swallowed hard, trying to stay calm, to push down the tumult of emotions roiling inside him.
“She’s telling you she’ll be okay. Trust her. She knows her body better than you do.”
His hands hovered in the air for a moment, uncertain, as though he wasn’t sure if he had the right to touch her. His hesitation was palpable, this was the first time he was so close to her since everything had changed between them.
His fingers trembled slightly, caught between the urge to help and the weight of his guilt.
