Prologue

“Bihar?”

“I think I am thinking most clearly I ever have for the first time in the last 5 years,” Rubika replied calmly. She knew there were going to be some serious repercussions for her decision.

Rubika was a journalist in one of the top Hindi news channels. Just after completing her bachelor's in Mass Communication from Delhi University, she joined the news channel as an intern, and she got the job after the internship.

Rubika always thought she had all she ever wanted: a husband who loved her so much and a job in a respected and top channel. They were very well in the financial aspect, but still there was something bothering her. Though she had a job but she was not satisfied as she always wanted to work as a ground reporter. She wanted to be a journalist who raises the real issues of the common people.

The initial years of her married life were full of a lot of sex and happy moments with her husband. But when her mother-in-law moved in with them after the death of her father-in-law, things started to change. She missed the privacy she used to enjoy with her husband before her mother-in-law moved in. It was still manageable for her, but the situation worsened for her when her mother-in-law started demanding grandchildren, and she was also against her working. Things had escalated to a point where It was unbearable for Rubika. She was tired of listening to her taunts.

She was looking for a break from all this, and the Bihar election could not have come at a better time. Her channel was sending a team of journalists to cover the Bihar election from the ground. She was more than happy to join the team as it serves two purposes for her: she can get time away from her toxic mother-in-law, and she can also complete the long-lost dream of working as a ground reporter.

“I don’t think Mom will like the idea of you going to Bihar. Besides, I also don't think it will be safe for you to go there, as a lot of terrifying news comes from there,” Rehan tried to convince her.

“I have made up my mind, and now I am not going to listen to any bullshit of your mom not liking it or not.” Rubika replied firmly as she packed her bag, “ You can use this time to tell her that it was our mutual decision not to have children and enjoy our life. Why should I take all the blame?”
