Mansi: "It’s about honesty, Rina. About saying what you actually feel, even if it’s something you’d normally keep to yourself."

My mother smiled politely, not sure where to look.

Rina: "Honesty is... hard. I just pretend I am fine."

Mansi: "Exactly," Mansi Aunty said, leaning slightly forward, her elbows on her knees. "And pretending keeps us lonely. Silence hurts more than truth."

My mother looked down at her teacup, tracing the rim with her finger.

Rina: "Sometimes I feel invisible. I take care of Sunny, I work, and still, it’s like there’s no one left to talk to."

Mansi: "You’re talking now," Mansi Aunty said softly. "That’s where it begins."

My mother looked up, their eyes meeting. Something passed between them.

Jayashree: "See? I told you two would get along." Her smile was knowing.

Mansi: "Rina, let's go for a walk in the hills later. You and me. Jayashree will watch over Sunny."

Rina: "A walk sounds… nice."
Her voice was quiet, but her expression had softened, the way people look when they allow a bit of warmth back in. The suggestion of private time with Mansi Aunty was a clear, unspoken invitation into the world of shared comfort.
Outside, Dehradun’s evening light was fading through the curtains, pale gold turning blue.

Mansi: "Rina. Always giving, rarely asking. Maybe that’s why Jayashree wanted us to meet. We both need to remember we’re still allowed to feel… alive."

My mother didn’t answer right away. But she didn’t look away either.

Rina: "Maybe you’re right."
Then Jayashree laughed gently, diffusing the stillness.

Jayashree: "All right, you two philosophers. Sunny will think we’ve turned into poets."

I could tell something had changed, not in words, but in the air. Mansi’s voice had a quiet magnetism to it, and my mother, seemed curious about something, or someone, again.
