Priya Didi felt a warmth spreading in her chest, one she couldn’t name. The faint brush of his arm against hers, the soft proximity, the way his presence seemed to vibrate quietly beside her, everything was both infuriating and achingly familiar.
Her eyes dropped to her hands, folded neatly in her lap, then flicked sideways to glance at him. “He’s right there… so close… and yet, I want him. I shouldn’t. I shouldn’t want this. I can’t forgive him yet. And yet… there’s something in his eyes. Something that makes me want to reach out, to… trust him.”
For a few moments, there was nothing but the noise of the auto, the road stretching out before them, the bustling city surrounding them. Neither spoke, but the quiet spoke louder than words ever could.
There was a subtle, undeniable warmth growing between them, despite the tension that had existed just hours ago. Ravi couldn’t decide if it was real or just a fleeting illusion, a momentary crack in the wall Priya Didi had so carefully built around herself.
“This is not what I expected. After everything, after all the hurt, the distance, how is this possible? How is she this close to me? How is it that I still want to reach for her, even when she’s made it clear she’s angry, hurt, and confused? Is this what hope feels like?” Ravi thought. He felt her presence so acutely now, the warmth of her shoulder against his, the soft rise and fall of her chest as she breathed, as though the air itself between them was changing.
For the briefest of moments, his hand, resting lightly on his lap, moved just slightly. He wasn’t sure if he was doing it consciously or not, but before he could pull back, he felt her fingers brush against his. It was small, just a fleeting moment, but it was enough.
Priya Didi’s breath caught in her throat, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, her fingers lingered, just enough to let them touch, just enough for Ravi to feel the warmth of her hand on his. Neither of them moved. Neither of them spoke.
The touch was so simple, so subtle, yet it felt like the world had paused for just a second. Ravi’s pulse quickened, and the weight of the moment pressed in on him.
