The slight shift in her body language, her refusal to fully acknowledge him, it was all so clear.
Finally, she gave a short nod, her voice distant. “Fine.”
Ravi exhaled, a small relief washing over him. He moved a little closer, careful not to crowd her, but he couldn’t help noticing how every movement she made seemed like a thing of quiet grace. The way her saree fluttered behind her as she walked, the gentle arch of her back, the subtle rhythm of her steps, it was all so familiar, yet so foreign, as though he no longer had the right to witness it.
They walked in silence for a few moments, the sounds of the city bustling around them, but the space between them felt filled with something heavier. The air was thick with tension, yet there was an undeniable current pulling them closer with each step.
Ravi's eyes never left her. He admired the elegance in her every movement, the way her saree clung to her form with effortless beauty. He watched as she glanced around, her eyes sharp, taking in every detail, always scanning, always aware.
Her footsteps echoed softly against the sidewalk, and he found himself walking a little faster just to match her pace. Her presence was magnetic, a pull he couldn’t deny, even if he tried. He couldn’t help but observe how the sun seemed to wrap around her like a halo, catching the highlights in her hair, the soft sheen of her skin. Even the way she walked, so composed, yet with a quiet fragility in the way she held herself, was something he couldn’t ignore.
“Didi,” he said again, his voice barely above a whisper, though he knew she could hear him. “You look beautiful today.”
The compliment hung in the air between them, like a delicate thread. Priya Didi didn’t acknowledge it, but Ravi saw the briefest flicker of something in her eyes, a mix of surprise and restraint. She didn’t turn to look at him, but there was a subtle tightening in her jaw that made him wonder if she was fighting the urge to respond, to soften, or perhaps to shut him out completely.
He couldn’t help himself. “I… I don’t know if I’ll ever make up for what I did, but I want you to know I regret it every day. Every moment.”
