When they finished securing the window screen, the hut suddenly felt more private, more like a home. The air between them felt different now, less about survival, more about something soft, something they hadn’t expected.
 
As the orange of the sunset deepened into pink, they sat near the firepit. The warmth from the embers cut through the cool evening air, and for a long moment, they just sat in silence, the crackling fire filling the space between them. Naveen nodded, his eyes not leaving her face. He admired her, how she was always thinking, always planning, always pushing forward, even in the hardest moments. It stirred something deep in him. “We have. Tomorrow, we should start storing things, fruits, roots, anything that lasts a few days.”
 
Kavya’s gaze shifted to him, and she met his eyes with an almost tender look. “Like sweet potatoes. We saw plenty near the forest edge. If we roast them, they’ll last longer.”
 
He nodded, his voice quieter now. “I’m sure you’ll make them taste amazing, just like everything else you’ve done.” His gaze lingered on her a moment longer, warmth flooding through him.
 
She smiled at him, the kind of smile that made his chest tighten, and for a moment, he forgot everything else, just the way she looked at him, the trust and warmth in her eyes. “Maybe... but you’ll have to help with the roasting, too. You know, since you’re the expert,” she teased gently, her voice a little lower, more playful.
 
He leaned in slightly, his voice hushed, as if sharing a secret. “I’d be happy to help… in whatever way you need.”
 
The air between them was thick now, the tension palpable. There was no denying it any longer, whatever this was, it was growing, pulling them closer with each passing day.
 
The silence that fell between them now was no longer just comfortable, it was charged, full of words that hadn’t been spoken but were understood.
 
They simply sat, the fire between them crackling, the stars starting to twinkle above, and for the first time in days, Kavya felt something she hadn’t dared to admit: that they were beginning to build something real together, not just a shelter, but something more.
