Scene 30
Mansi smiled warmly and stood up from the sofa. She held out her hand to me. I took it, feeling the contrast of her smooth, cool palm against mine.
Mansi: "Come with me, Sunny,"
She said softly. "Let's go somewhere we can talk privately for a moment."
She led me out of the living room and toward a small, unused study at the end of the hallway. Jayashree Auntie remained seated on the sofa, watching us go with a small, knowing nod.
Mansi pushed the study door almost shut, leaving it slightly ajar. The room was dim and quiet, and the narrow sliver of light from the hallway provided just enough visibility. We stood there, still holding hands.
Mansi: "I know Jayashree has been teaching you about bodies and how they work,"
She began, her voice gentle and calm. "That's wonderful. I teach at a college sometimes, so I know how important it is for smart boys like you to learn new things."
She squeezed my hand reassuringly.
Mansi: "I live in Delhi, so I don't get to visit Jayashree often. But when I do, we talk for hours. I like reading books, especially about history, and I love spending time in my garden. I have big, bright hibiscus flowers."
I listened carefully, nodding. I liked the sound of her voice and the easy way she spoke to me, like I was a real person, not just a little boy.
Sunny: "Hibiscus flowers are red, right? We have them at my Dadi's house too."
Mansi: "That's right! You pay attention. That's a good quality."
She looked down at our clasped hands, then back up at me.
Mansi: "I've heard you have a very special bond with Jayashree now, full of secrets and trust. That kind of trust is very important between people who care about each other."
She leaned in just a little, her voice dropping to a confidential whisper.
Mansi: "I trust Jayashree too. And today, she trusts me to show you a few things she couldn't."
Her eyes, big and dark, searched mine.
Mansi: "Do you trust me too, Sunny?"
Sunny: "Yes,"
I replied, my voice a little breathless, my heart beginning to thump quickly against my ribs. I knew this was the real reason she had brought me into the small, dim room, and the realization sent a fresh wave of excitement through me.
