Scene 28

Jayashree Auntie and I emerged from my mom's room and walked back toward the main living area. The whole house seemed to be buzzing with activity, a mix of chatter, laughter, and the clatter of lunch preparations.

My mother immediately spotted us and walked over, her expression warm and grateful.

Mom: "Thank you, Jayashree! I told you he was a lot of work when it comes to hair oil."

Jayashree: "Nonsense, Rina,"
Jayashree replied with a light wave of her hand. "He's a sweet boy. Now, I see you have a few new faces here today. I must introduce myself properly."
My mom looked around at the crowd. Today being Sunday, more relatives had arrived. My Dadi's house was always a revolving door of family.

Mom: "Yes, you must. Come, let me introduce you to the whole crew."
My mother led Jayashree Auntie through the living room. I trailed slightly behind them, feeling scrubbed clean and quiet, watching Jayashree command the attention of the room.

Mom: "Everyone, this is Jayashree,"
My mom announced cheerfully. "She is our lovely neighbour, and truly, she is like family to us."
She started with her siblings.

Mom: "This is my older sister, Sushma Didi, and her husband, Gopal Jiju. And this is my younger brother, Mahesh Mama, and his wife, Priya Mami."
Jayashree greeted each one with a graceful Namaste, her demeanor perfectly poised. She exchanged pleasantries, her smile natural and engaging.

Then came the crowd of cousins. They were sprawled on the floor, playing a board game.

Mom: "And these are the noisy ones! You know Deepa and Ravi, but this is Vikram, Deepa's older son, and this is Sonia, Mahesh's daughter."

I stood there, clean and newly dressed, beside Jayashree. The cousins, busy with their game, gave her a quick, polite glance. I caught Vikram's eye; he was a few years older than me and always seemed to think he was very important.
Vikram: "Hello, Auntie."

Jayashree turned her full attention to them, bending slightly at the waist.

Jayashree: "Hello, children. It's lovely to meet you all. I hope you are enjoying your time here."
As she straightened up, she looked over at me, standing a little apart from the group. Her eyes held mine for a fraction of a second, an expression so quick and private that only I could read it, a look that said, They have no idea what we were just doing. It was our silent moment of triumph, quickly masked by the perfect, polite smile she offered my mother. Our secret world was safe, and the real world had no clue.
