## Update 63: The Shocking Proposal (Avi and Meena Chachi)

We all ate dinner early today. After dinner, Chacha and Meena Chachi went to their room. Suman Chachi and Seema Chachi lingered in the hall, talking in low whispers. I went to my room, trying to appear busy, but really just waiting for Meena Chachi. A little later, the other two Chachis finally went to their rooms as well.

At 11:00 PM, a soft, almost inaudible tap came at my door. Meena Chachi slipped inside.

"You're not asleep yet?" she asked, pulling the door closed behind her.

"I was waiting for you," I admitted.

She walked closer, her voice dropping to a serious, low register. "Look, Avi, I want to talk to you directly. I need you to listen without interrupting," she stated.

"What do you mean?" I asked, confused by her immediate intensity.

"I don't have a second condition," she said, sitting down on the bed beside me.

I frowned, bewildered. "Then what did you want to say to me tonight?"

"I first thought of blackmailing you with Madam's letter," she confessed openly.

My confusion deepened. "Why would you blackmail me? I don't understand what you're talking about, Chachi."

"Look, Avi, listen to me carefully. You know I haven't been able to become a mother yet. We went to the village to meet the Maharaj for this," she explained, her gaze steady.

"That's a good thing. By the grace of the Maharaj, you will become a mother," I said sincerely, still believing the cover story.

"You're so grown up, yet you talk like an idiot sometimes," she smiled faintly, but it was tinged with impatience.

"I'm telling the truth. People say he's very effective," I insisted.

"Does something like that ever happen? Have you ever actually seen a man of God make a woman pregnant?" she challenged, her eyebrow raising.

"No," I replied, forced to admit the truth.

"Then how can you say that? You're educated."

"But it happens to some people! They get results," I persisted, clinging to the widely held belief.

"Avi, you go to college, yet you believe in the Maharaj. What you said is true—people's wishes get fulfilled—but that's just a coincidence, not magic," she explained patiently.

"I still don't understand the lie," I admitted.

"I'll tell you something important. You know Mangala Kaki, right?"

"Yes."

"Mangala Kaki thinks she had her daughter because of the Maharaj. But that's not true," she revealed, shaking her head slowly.

"Why not? How do you know?" I asked, leaning in.

"Just as your Chacha is infertile, Mangala Kaki's husband was also a little weak. He just needed some time, not a miracle," she explained.

"I still don't understand the difference," I said.

"My friend is a nurse, and she explained it. Some men are weak; it takes time for them to have a child. The same thing happened with Mangala Kaki. Her going to the Maharaj and then finally becoming a mother happened at the exact same time. So Mangala Kaki genuinely believes she became a mother because of the Maharaj's blessing," she finished.

"So, people don't become mothers because of the Maharaj?" I asked, feeling a shift in my understanding of the world.

"No one becomes a mother because of any Maharaj or saint. You become a mother after having sex with a fertile husband," she stated plainly.

"Then why did you go to the Maharaj, Chachi?" I asked, needing to know the reason for the deception.

"If I become a mother now, after years of not conceiving, people in the village and neighborhood will start talking," she sighed, touching her throat. "We went to the Maharaj to silence them. It's an alibi."

"Why are you telling me all this, Chachi?" I looked at her, sensing the immense importance of this confession, the air heavy between us.

"Look, Avi, your Chacha doesn't know he's infertile. He can never become a father. But I can become a mother if I have sex with another man," she took a deep breath. "So the three of us—Suman Chachi, Seema Chachi, and I—decided we would have sex with another man to become mothers."

"What? You will have sex with another man?" I asked, truly shocked by the revelation of their secret pact.

"I have to, Avi, to become a mother. But what would that man be like? Could we trust him with our lives? Would he take advantage of this vulnerability? These were all the questions we faced when planning in the village," she admitted, her voice tight with worry.

"That's a definite possibility," I agreed, realizing the danger they faced.

"That's why we need someone we can trust completely, someone who is already close to us," she said, leaning closer, her eyes burning with intensity.

"It's hard to find such a man," I murmured, my thoughts racing, trying to guess who she could mean.

"I thought, don't get angry at this suggestion, but instead of finding some dangerous stranger, you could have sex with us and make us mothers," she reached out and placed her hand firmly on mine.

"What? Me? With you? Chachi, I consider you my mother!" I exclaimed, jumping up from the bed, the shock hitting me fully. The world spun; the simple words felt like a thunderclap in the quiet room. My mind refused to process the image of her, or any of the Chachis, needing *my* lunď for a child. I backed away until my shoulders hit the wall, my chest heaving.
