Scene 3: The Unholy Vows
Jeevan: "So get ready Sukhmani, we all 3 are getting married, come sit with me, along with your sister, pandit ji please continue." Toh taiyaar ho jao Sukhmani, hum teeno shaadi kar rahe hain, aao mere paas baitho, apni behen ke saath, pandit ji kripya jaari rakhein.
Pandit Ji: "But... but Jeevan Sahab! This is adharma! It is a great sin! I cannot marry two sisters! And... and she is already married! This is madness!" Lekin... lekin Jeevan Sahab! Yeh [i]adharma hai! Yeh maha-paap hai! Main do beheno se shaadi nahi karwa sakta! Aur... aur yeh pehle se shaadi-shuda hain! Yeh pagalpan hai!

Jeevan: "Pandit ji. Your job is to chant the mantras. My job is to decide who sits in the mandap. The debt is paid, the wedding happens. It is that simple. Or perhaps your temple trust needs a... review... of its funding?" Pandit ji. Aapka kaam mantra padhna hai. Mera kaam hai yeh tay karna ki mandap mein kaun baithega. Karz chuka diya gaya hai, shaadi ho rahi hai. Yeh itna hi saral hai. Ya shaayad aapke mandir ke trust ko... uske funding ka... review karwana hai?
The Pandit turned pale and swallowed hard. He looked at Sardar Bhupinder Singh, who just stared at the floor in shame.
Manjeet Kaur: "Sukhmani! Beta, no! Don't do this! Think of Rohan! We will find another way! We will beg! We will sell everything!" Sukhmani! Beta, nahi! Aisa mat karo! Rohan ke baare mein socho! Hum koi aur raasta nikaal lenge! Hum bheekh maang lenge! Hum sab kuch bech denge!
Sukhmani: "Maa, stop. What did Rohan ever give me? A cold bed? A life without passion? At least this... this has a purpose. I am saving our family. I am saving Preet." Maa, bas karo. Rohan ne mujhe kya diya? Ek thanda bistar? Ek bina junoon ki zindagi? Kam se kam iska... iska ek maksad toh hai. Main hamara parivar bacha rahi hoon. Main Preet ko bacha rahi hoon.
Sukhmani walked forward. Her movements were stiff, but deliberate. She didn't look like a victim, she looked like a warrior walking into a battle she knew she had to lose.
Preet: "Didi... Didi, please! No! I don't want this! I don't want to be married! Didi!" Didi... Didi, please! Nahi! Mujhe yeh nahi chahiye! Mujhe shaadi nahi karni! Didi!
Sukhmani: "Quiet, Preet. Be a bride. Your wedding is happening." Chup raho, Preet. Ek dulhan bano. Tumhari shaadi ho rahi hai.
She reached the mandap. Jeevan smiled and patted the silk cushion right next to him, on his other side, opposite the weeping Preet.
Jeevan: "Here, my darling Sukhmani. A wife's rightful place. Preet on the left, you on the right. Perfectly balanced." Yahan, meri pyaari Sukhmani. Ek patni ki sahi jagah. Preet baayi taraf, tum daayi taraf. Bilkul santulit.
Sukhmani sat down. The fire in the center of the mandap crackled, illuminating the scene: one groom, dominant and victorious, seated between two sisters—one terrified and crying, the other stiff, defiant, and beautiful.
Pandit Ji: "As... as you wish, Jeevan ji. Let us... let us resume the rites. Please... uh... please both of you... hold his hands." Jaisi... jaisi aapki ichha, Jeevan ji. Chaliye... chaliye hum rasmein phir se shuru karte hain. Kripya... uh... kripya aap dono... inka haath pakdein.
