## Update 40: The Scrutiny and the Papers (Avi and Chachis/Mala/Komal)

As soon as I got home, the moment I dreaded arrived. The two Chachis were waiting for me in the living area.

Suman Chachi demanded, her face stern, her arms crossed. “Where were you until now? It’s past 8:30 p.m.!”

Meena Chachi crossed her arms tighter, leaning in slightly toward Suman Chachi. “Didi, tell his Chacha what he’s doing, before it’s too late,” she said, clearly using the threat of my Chacha to pressure me.

“I was out for some work,” I said vaguely, hoping to defuse the situation with minimal detail.

Suman Chachi pressed, her voice sharp. “What work, Avi? You haven’t been gone this late for 'work' before.”

“My own,” I insisted, trying to hold her gaze.

“What kind of work took you so long that you missed dinner?” Suman Chachi asked, her voice growing sterner, demanding a specific answer.

Meena Chachi stepped closer, her voice a dangerous whisper that only I could hear clearly, confirming she was using the earlier event for leverage. “Tell the truth, or else I will personally tell your Chacha about your little bathroom incident this morning.”

I conceded, reverting to my alibi, dropping my eyes. “I went to my friend’s house.”

“For what purpose?” Suman Chachi asked, sensing the evasion.

“To get old exam papers for my studies,” I said, sticking to my established, safe story.

Suman Chachi demanded, testing my truthfulness, extending her hand. “Show me the papers right now.”

I improvised quickly, shaking my head apologetically. “He said he'll give them to me at schoool tomorrow.”

Meena Chachi stated flatly, glaring at me, her suspicion firm. “You are lying.” She tapped her foot once on the floor. “Show them to me as soon as you come back from college tomorrow, or I'll have to tell your Chacha everything.”

I allowed my voice to crack a little, playing the part of the wounded innocent, my chest tight. “Don't you both trust me, Chachi?”

Suman Chachi’s expression softened a little in response to my performance. “I trust you more than my own life, Avi. But I'm scared that you'll get into some kind of bad habit and ruin your focus.”

I said, my voice full of forced sincerity, meeting her gaze briefly. “Chachi, I'll never let your trust break. I promise.”

Meena Chachi cut in, her tone impatient. “I don't care about the trust right now; I want to see those papers. Show them to me as soon as you come back from college tomorrow, without fail.”

I lowered my head in feigned defeat and murmured, "Yes, Chachi, I'll show them to you."

Suman Chachi sighed, dismissing me with a slight wave of her hand. “Go and eat dinner now.”

“Yes, Chachi,” I said and quickly went inside, relieved that the immediate danger was averted, but now entirely under Meena Chachi's strict observation. My muscles finally relaxed from their rigid tension. The anxiety in my stomach slowly began to subside. I took a long, deep breath to steady my racing heart.

The next day at schoool, as promised, Mala came to me during the break and gave me a stack of old exam papers.

“Thank you, Mala. These will be a great help,” I said, taking the papers.

She hesitated, fiddling with the edge of her skirt. “Can I ask you something, Avi?”

“Yes, ask,” I said.

She asked, her face confused and slightly hurt. “Yesterday, you clearly refused to take the old papers when I offered them at college. You said you needed them for Komal, but what was the desperate need to come all the way to my house in the evening? Why couldn't you wait until today?”

If I tell Mala about Komal, she'll get upset, thinking I prefer Komal's company to hers, especially since I came to her house to ask. I decided I had to lie about the urgency. I lied smoothly, shrugging slightly. “It's just that after I went home, I felt it would be really good to look at the old exam papers and practice with Komal right away before the term is over.”

She looked down the hallway nervously, worried about who might be watching. “You could have just asked for them at college today, though. What was the need to come home? And please, don't come to my house again. If someone finds out that I meet you outside of schoool, they'll misunderstand and start gossiping.”

“Sorry, Mala. It won't happen again,” I said, and a wave of regret washed over me for needlessly using her vulnerability.

After saying sorry, I went to class. When I got home from college, the first thing I did was immediately show the stack of papers to Meena Chachi. She took them, flipped through them quickly, and a small, satisfied smile appeared on her face. She didn't say a single word, simply handing them back. The visual evidence was enough to satisfy her that I hadn't been wasting time or indulging in "bad habits."

At 4 p.m., I went to Komal's house. Komal was happy and grateful to see the papers, and we immediately started studying, going over the patterns and question types. After studying, I went home.

I didn't feel like going to the ground today, despite my urge to play. I also desperately wanted to have sex with Mona again after the intensity of yesterday, the memory of her body a powerful draw, but I decided against it. I didn't want to take any risks. First, that man who caught us yesterday could come back, or perhaps Mona's Boyfriend or Brother would be lurking, anticipating my return. Second, and more importantly, if I got late again today, Meena Chachi would become instantly suspicious, and the entire week of freedom my Chachas had planned would be ruined.

I resolved that as long as my Chachis are preparing to leave and until they come back from the village, I have to stay strictly away from Mona and the storehouse. I would use my time off to study, help Komal, and explore other, safer opportunities without the risk of being caught. Control, I reminded myself. Control is everything.
