Part 51 – New Year Party In Our Apartment

Bijan's POV - Every festival of the year is celebrated with great pomp in our apartment. We have spent about two and a half years in this apartment. And during this time, we have celebrated many festivals together with all the people of the apartment. People of almost all religions live together in our apartment, so we also get a chance to celebrate festivals related to all religions. And both of us like to participate in these festivals, especially my lovely wife Pihu. I remain busy with my office work most of the day. But she always stays at home. That is why she is acquainted with many neighbors of our apartment. And when the time for a festival comes, Pihu also helps in its arrangements. Our apartment has a big banquet hall, where all the people of the apartment gather and celebrate every festival and celebration together. So one such occasion was the New Year party. New Year parties are also celebrated in a very grand manner in our apartment. Since this area is an upper-middle class area and a lot of rich people live in this apartment, the parties here are also quite big and grand in size. After coming to this city, we had the opportunity to participate in a big and grand New Year party in this apartment twice more. But unfortunately, we did not get this opportunity in the last two years. Once we both went to the village to celebrate New Year with our families. And once we both went to Puri (a famous tourist place in Odisha), about which I have already told you in detail. Anyway, this year we were going to stay in this city during New Year. It was winter season. There was cold wind and thick fog all around. And New Year was also near. This was about 10 to 12 days before New Year. At night while sleeping, I asked Pihu, “Darling, have you thought of anything for this year's New Year?” She asked me back, “What is there to think about in this?” I said, “Do we have to go anywhere in the New Year, or we will stay here.” Pihu said, “No Bijan, I don’t feel like going out this year. We will stay here.” I said, “That’s fine, but what will we do that day? We can’t sit alone at home, and we don’t have many friends in this city where we can go and party. So what will we do on New Year’s night?” Hearing my words, Pihu became a little thoughtful. Perhaps she had not thought about this before. After thinking a bit, Pihu said to me, “Bijan, we can do one thing.” I asked her, “What?” She told me, “I have heard that the New Year party in our apartment is also very amazing. We have missed this party for the last two years. Why not attend our own apartment party this year? And I have also heard that this year’s New Year party is going to be special.” I asked Pihu, “Why? What is special in this year’s party?” Pihu said, "I don't know exactly. But I have heard that the son of our apartment secretary is coming home this year after completing his studies. That is why our secretary has organized a party on the night of 31st December. He will bear all the expenses. And I have also heard that he is going to invite everyone living in the apartment to come to the party that day." After listening to her, I said, "This is a good thing. So the decision is final that this year we will go to the party in our apartment only."


What Pihu had heard turned out to be true. Two days later, one morning, our apartment secretary Mr. Sameer came to our house. He said, “Bijan, my son Neeladri is coming back home after completing his studies this year. He was living abroad for the last five years to complete his studies. He will come here on 30th December. I was thinking of throwing a party on the night of 31st to celebrate his return home. In a way, it will be a New Year party as well, and in a way, it will also be to celebrate the return of Neel, that is my son. In the last two years, you both have not been to the New Year party. But this year, you must come to the party.” I told Sameer, “Don’t worry. This year we are not going anywhere. We will stay here. And Pihu and I will definitely come to your party.” Sameer told Pihu, “Definitely come. And also introduce yourself to Neel. He is a very nice boy.” Pihu said, "We will definitely come to your party." Sameer went away happily. Days passed by and 31st December arrived. That morning when I was leaving the office, Pihu said to me, "Bijan, you should come early from office today. Do you remember, we have to go to Mr. Sameer’s New Year party this evening?" I said, "Yes, I remember. Don't worry, I will come on time." Pihu said, "You have a leave from office tomorrow, right? We will party all night today. We will have fun." I said, "Okay. As you wish. We will definitely party all night." When I returned from office in the evening, I saw that Pihu was already ready. She was wearing an expensive black chiffon saree with a matching sleeveless blouse, the string of which was tied behind her back. I had gifted this saree to her on our last wedding anniversary. She wore the saree well below her navel and as the blouse was sleeveless, her arms were visible. She had not done much makeup. She had just done some touch up etc. She had applied a maroon color lipstick on her lips. She had a necklace around her neck and earrings in her ears. Some bangles and bracelets in her hands. Pihu always applies sindoor (vermilion) in her sinthi (parting of the hair). She has applied it today also. All in all, she was looking quite sexy. But I did not like one thing. By the time I reached home, Pihu was ready and was waiting for me to come home from office. When I came home, the first thing she asked me was, “Bijan, tell me honestly, how am I looking?” I praised her and said, “Very beautiful!!! But darling, today even the word ‘beautiful’ will fall short in front of you, my love!!” Pihu was happy to hear my praise, but also a little shy. She said, “So, what word do you want to say for me instead of ‘beautiful’?” I took my mouth near her ear and said, “‘Sexy’!!! I think you are going to wreak havoc in the party today.” She blushed even more on hearing this. She said smilingly, “So what do you think, will two or three people in the party fall for me?” I pretended to think for a while and then said, “I have no doubt about that. But I am worried about one thing.” She asked, “And what is that?” I winked at her and said, “Will two or three people be enough for you?” Pihu immediately understood my hint. Pretending to be angry, she said, “If you say this, I will never go to today's party, Bijan.” I immediately said, “Oh, hey, don't be angry, darling. I was just joking. You look really beautiful and sexy. But I didn't like one thing. Should I tell you?” She said, “Tell me.” I told Pihu, “You are wearing a black colored saree with a matching blouse. This is fine, but you are wearing a red colored bra under the black colored blouse, which is well visible from above the blouse you are wearing. And it is not matching either. Why didn't you wear a bra that matches your blouse?” Pihu started laughing after listening to me. I said, “What did I say to laugh about, why are you laughing so much?” Pihu replied laughing, “Bijan, I am not laughing at what you said, I am laughing because your eyes have become so sharp these days that you have started noticing the color of the bra hidden inside my blouse as well. And as far as wearing a red bra under a black blouse is concerned, let me tell you that I have worn it intentionally. This will make my red bra look good under the black blouse. And this will make me look even more ‘sexy’ in your words. Isn’t it? I am looking sexy, right?” I said, “Indeed you are looking sexy, darling.” Pihu said, “Then don’t waste any more time. We are getting late for the party. I have already taken out your clothes. Quickly go to the bedroom and change. Then both of us husband and wife will go out together to have fun in the party.” I kissed Pihu on her cheek and said “Jo Hukum Meri Rani! (Whatever you say my queen)” and went to the bedroom to change my clothes. I was thinking right. Pihu will not only add glamour to tonight's party, she will literally set it on fire. And that is why I am proud of my wife and also love her. I love her very very much!!!


Around 8 o'clock in the night, Pihu and I got ready and reached the party. The banquet hall was on the ground floor of our apartment. When we both reached the party, many people had already came before us. A young waitress was standing at the door of the hall and giving a rose to each person who was going inside the party. When Pihu and I reached the door, that waitress gave us a rose each. We took it and entered the party. It was only 8 o'clock in the night, but by then the party was in full swing. Many people had already arrived before us. They were busy enjoying the party according to their own wishes. Since our apartment was in a rich area and many rich people lived in our apartment, it was obvious that people from outside would also have been invited to this party. Because in this party, I got to see many people whose faces I was seeing for the first time today. There was unlimited arrangement of food and drinks in the party. And there was also arrangement for alcohol. A lot of people were talking to each other while happily sipping wine glasses in their hands. Loud music was playing inside, where some Bollywood songs were playing. And along with that music, some young boys and girls were dancing in pairs. The atmosphere of the party seemed quite great already. Our apartment secretary Sameer was standing in a corner of the hall and talking to some people. Seeing us coming, he came towards us laughing. And after shaking hands with me, he said, “Hey Bijan, when you, being a family member, are coming so late to the party, what will I say to others?” I replied smilingly, “I apologize for your complaint, Sameer. But I was a little late in coming from the office.” Before I could say anything more, Pihu said to Sameer, “Sameer, you cannot blame me. Often we hear that husbands get late for going somewhere because their wives are getting ready. But our story is a little different. I have already got ready for the party before Bijan returns from office. So please don’t say anything to me. Bijan is the only one responsible for today’s delay. And tell him.” I said laughingly, “When my own wife is refusing to take my side, then what else can I say. I myself apologize to you for the delay.” Sameer also laughed now, “Okay, better late than never, Bijan. I will forgive you this time. Anyway, you enjoy the party according to your wish. You all must know that I am throwing this party tonight. I have invited a lot of people as well. That’s why I will be a little busy. But you both are from my family. You enjoy according to your wish.” Pihu said to them, "Don't worry. I already asked Bijan to take leave from his office tomorrow for your party only. We will have fun in the party all night." Sameer said happily, "This is what I wanted. Let's enjoy." I said, "But where is your son? We haven't seen him even once till now. Call him, let's introduce him with us." After listening to me, Sameer looked around and said, “Where did Neel go? He was just here.” Then looking at us he said, “Neel must be somewhere around here. He is hot-blooded, not old like us who will stand at one place and chat with friends?” Pihu said, “Let him also enjoy as per his wish. We are here the whole night. We will get to know him later.” Sameer said, “Yes, this is also right. So you guys don’t waste your fun and time by talking with me. Enjoy. There is a liquor stall there. Bijan, you are okay with all this, right?” Sameer asked me laughing. I also replied to him laughing, “Absolutely. But Pihu doesn’t like all this.” Sameer was a little surprised and looking at Pihu asked, “Pihu, you really don’t drink?” Pihu replied laughingly, “No. I don’t drink. Actually I don’t like the smell of alcohol. I feel like vomiting with the smell of alcohol.” Sameer said, “It’s okay. There is also a counter for soft drinks and mocktails. You can get something from there for yourself.” Pihu said, “Don’t worry. You go and take care of the other guests. We both will enjoy.” Sameer left. I asked Pihu, “So darling, how do we start?” Pihu looked at me and said, “My wish is something else. But will you listen to me? You must be craving for alcohol just by hearing about it.” I said laughingly, “No one can understand me better than you. I don’t know how you guess my thoughts correctly every time.” Pihu said, “Now stop flattery and go and get something for yourself. And yes, remember we are going to party here all night. Don't spoil the fun for yourself and me by drinking too much right from the beginning." I said, "No. Don't worry darling. I will stay within limits. But what will you have?" Pihu said, "Don't worry about me. I will get some good mocktails for me. You go, I am here. I will go to get my mocktail after you come back." I told her, "Okay, as you wish." I went to the liquor counter. Pihu remained standing there.


Time passed by as per its own pace. Slowly everyone came to the party and started having fun. Me and Pihu also started enjoying the party along with the rest of the people. Dancing, eating, drinking, fun, everything started. The night also started getting longer. Suddenly Sameer came to us. I saw that he had a 24 year old young boy with him. Both of them came to us and Sameer said, “Finally this boy came in my hands and I have brought him immediately to introduce you. Bijan, Pihu this is my son Neel. And Neel, this is Bijan and his wife Pihu. Both of them live in our apartment. You might not have met these people before, because when you went abroad to study, they did not come to live here. These people came here two and a half years ago. You talk to them a little. They are very nice people. I will take care of the other guests.” Saying this Sameer left from there. Neel sat there and started talking to us. Sameer had told us that his son Neel was a very nice boy. That was absolutely true. As long as we talked to each other, I liked him a lot. His nature was also good. He was young. Around 24. He looked very handsome too. He did not have a muscular body, but he was not too thin either. He was in between the two. But he definitely had a charm, which attracted other people towards him. Pihu must have liked Neel too. Because she started talking more with him. Actually Pihu has been fond of travelling abroad since childhood, and since Neel has been abroad for a long time, it is obvious that she would be curious to know about foreign countries from him. And something similar happened. Pihu started asking Neel a lot of questions about foreign countries. Neel kept answering her every question comfortably. At one point, I myself stopped Pihu and said, “What are you doing darling? If you keep Neel sitting with you like this, then when will the poor guy have fun? Leave him, let him enjoy himself.” But Neel said to me, “No, I have no problem talking to you. In fact, I am enjoying talking to her in real. Actually, I am a reserved type of guy. I cannot mingle with anyone easily. I like talking to whomever I like to talk to from my heart. I am enjoying talking to your wife. And as far as the party is concerned, the night is still left. I can party whenever I want.” Hearing this, Pihu became even more happy with Neel. She said, “Thank you, Neel. Actually, I like to travel abroad. That is why I am asking you all these questions.” Neel replied, "It's okay. Whenever you go abroad, give me a call. I will take you both to my home. But there is a problem." Pihu asked, "What problem?" Neel smiled a little and said, "I have been talking to you for a long time, but I am not able to understand what I should call you." Pihu laughed and said, "What is the problem in this? I am a little older than you, you can call me didi (elder sister), or boudi (sister-in-law) or even aunty if you want. I will not have any problem." In response, Neel looked at Pihu carefully and then said, "You are not so old that people of my age call you aunty. And didi and boudi are also a bit outdated. But yes, I do have a suggestion, if you want, I can say it." Pihu laughed again and said, "Tell me." Neel said, “You know, in foreign countries, they don’t say uncle-aunty, brother-sister-in-law. On the contrary, everyone calls each other by name. Whether they are older or younger than you. They don’t mind. And to tell you the truth, after living there for so many years, I have also got into this habit. I also call even the people older than me by their names. If you don’t mind, I can call you by your name too.”


Pihu said, "I won't feel bad at all. You can call me by my name. Bijan too. Why, isn't it Bijan?" Pihu said the last thing while looking at me. I nodded my head in agree with her. After this Pihu asked Neel, "So tell me Neel, do you have any girlfriends there or not? Tell me the truth. And don't worry, we won't tell your father anything about this." Neel said calmly, "Even if you tell me, it won't make any difference to me. Because I want to talk to him about this myself. I know, he won't listen to me, but I want to make him listen to me, at...at any cost." I found his words a bit strange. Before I could say anything, Pihu asked him, "Why, why do you think that your father won't listen to you? Yes, I agree he is old, and he believes in his culture with all his heart, but still I think he won't make you sad. He will listen to you. And today there is no such thing as Indian, or foreigner." In the era of globalization, everyone is the same. You are afraid that your father may not accept your foreign girlfriend as his daughter-in-law. But I am sure he will accept. Don't worry." After Pihu finished speaking, Neel probably went to say something, but stopped himself at the right time. I thought Neel must be hiding something from us. This is also justified, not everyone likes to talk about their personal life with outsiders like us. Neel also probably doesn't like it. Seeing Neel's expressions, I also gestured to Pihu not to say anything more about this. Pihu understood what I was saying. She did not say anything more. Suddenly Neel said to us, "Since when have you guys been talking to me, I will bring drinks for both of you. You tell me what should I bring for you?" Pihu replied laughing once again, "Thank you Neel, but I don't drink. Yes, Bijan drinks, you can ask him what he would like to have." Neel did not look at me even once. He asked Pihu in surprise, “You don’t drink?!” Pihu laughed again and said, “No. I don’t like the smell of alcohol. I feel like vomiting.” Neel said, “Oh! Okay, I will get you some mocktail.” Saying this, he immediately got up and left. As soon as he left, I said to Pihu, “See, what I said. This secretary’s son himself has fallen in love with you. Didn’t you see how he ran to get mocktail for you. He did not even ask me once what I would like to have.” Pihu started laughing again at my statement. She said, “Stop it Bijan. He is mere a nice-natured small enthusiast boy.” I said, “A small boy!!! Are you crazy!! He is a 24-year-old young man. He has returned after staying abroad for 5 years. His behavior will be different. Believe me, he has started liking you.” Before Pihu could reply to my question, Neel returned. He had a small tray in his hand. In which there were three glasses. One of Mocktail and two of wine. This means that he also drinks alcohol. Maybe he does not drink in front of his father, but he drinks behind his back. Like now. He first handed Pihu her glass. Pihu said smilingly, “Thank you, Neel. So kind of you.” Neel looked at her eyes and replied, “Not mention, please.”


But the real incident happened just after that. I was sitting next to Pihu. After giving Pihu her glass, when he turned towards me and went to give me my glass, unfortunately he lost his balance somehow and the tray slipped from his hands and fell down. And the glass of wine fell on Pihu. All the wine from the glass fell on Pihu's saree. A lot of wine also fell on her body. Pihu got nervous and stood up. And Neel was also surprised, what had happened. He immediately started wiping the remaining wine from Pihu's saree with his own hands and started apologizing to Pihu continuously, “Sorry, sorry, Pihu. I am extremely sorry. I did not do all this intentionally. The tray slipped from my hand.” Hearing his words, the people around us also stopped and started looking at us. Just then Sameer and his wife came running towards us. Sameer's wife asked her son, "What happened Neel?" Neel said, "Nothing mom, I had brought drinks for her, it accidentally spilled on her." Sameer said, "But why should you bring the drinks yourself, there were so many waiters, you could have told one of them and he would have brought it." Neel looked at his father and said, "I wanted to give her the drinks with my own hands, Papa." Sameer said, "That's fine. But look, what happened due to your one mistake. Poor Pihu, what will she do now? Son, you spoiled her fun." Pihu stopped Sameer and said, "Sameer, please don't scold Neel. He is not at fault in this. Whatever happened, happened suddenly and by mistake. He has not done this intentionally. And don't worry about me. I will clean it and come back." Before anyone could say anything, Neel's mother said, "Pihu is absolutely right. Pihu, you come with me, go to our house and clean it." Pihu said, "You don't need to take the trouble. Don't worry, I will go to my house and clean it and come back soon." Neel's mother said, "Where, you will go to your house right now. It is better that you come to our house and clean it. I will also come with you." Pihu said, "Okay. Then let's go to your house." Now Neel said to his mother, "Mom, you wait. You don't need to go. You give me the keys to our house. I will go with Pihu. Since I have made a mistake, I will correct it myself." Pihu said to Neel, "You don't need to come, Neel, I will take care of it myself." Neel looked at Pihu and said, "This doesn't happen in foreign countries, Pihu. There, if someone makes a mistake, then he himself corrects that mistake himself." Saying this, he took the house keys from his mother and took Pihu with him to his house. Before leaving, Pihu said to me, "Bijan, you wait. I will clean the place and come back." I looked at Neel once and then at Pihu and whispered to her, "There is no need to hurry, darling. You take your time and clean yourself." Pihu looked at me once but did not say anything. She quietly went out of the party with Neel. The rest of the people again started enjoying the party. I took a glass of wine and started drinking it quite comfortably.
