Title: Auntie's Touch
Scene 9
The next two days were a blur. I was physically present in my Dadi's loud, bustling joint-family home, surrounded by the chatter of cousins and the comings and goings of my aunts and uncles, but my mind was somewhere else entirely. It was trapped in that quiet back room, replaying every single moment with Jayashree Auntie. I could still feel the warmth of her skin, the sweet taste of her milk, and the incredible, explosive feeling of release.
Jayashree Auntie, who was our next-door neighbour, usually came over every day. But for two whole days, she didn't visit. Every time the doorbell rang, my heart would leap, only to fall when it was someone else. The wait was agonizing. I needed to see her.
On the third morning, I couldn't bear it anymore. I found my mom in the courtyard, sorting through laundry.
"Mom," I started, trying to sound casual. "Jayashree Auntie hasn't come over. Is she okay?"
"I'm sure she's fine, beta. Probably just busy."
"Can I go to her house and see?" I asked, my heart hammering. "Just to say hello?"
My mom smiled, pleased by my concern. "Of course, Sunny. That's very sweet of you. Go ahead."
With permission granted, I practically ran out the front gate and to the house next door. My hand was trembling slightly as I reached up and pressed the doorbell. I heard the chime from inside, followed by the sound of footsteps.
The door opened, and there she was. Jayashree Auntie. She was wearing a simple house gown, her hair was tied up loosely, and she looked surprised to see me.
Jayashree: "Sunny? What are you doing here, beta?"
Sunny: "You didn't come," I said, my voice small. "I… I was worried."
A slow smile spread across her face, a familiar, knowing smile that made my stomach flutter. She looked past me, towards my house, then back at me.
Jayashree: "That's very sweet. I've just been busy with some things at home." She leaned against the doorframe, her eyes searching mine. "Come in for a minute."
I quickly stepped inside as she held the door open for me. It was quiet and cool inside her house, a stark contrast to the noise of my own. She closed the door behind us, and the soft click of the lock echoed in the silence. We were alone.
