Chapter 40: Janina (Act 8)
The week that followed was a blur of preparations and difficult decisions. Rahim couldn’t shake the feeling that Lina would be better off giving birth in her hometown, closer to her parents. The last few weeks had been emotionally taxing, and with Lina due in just three weeks, he knew she needed all the support she could get.
One evening, as they sat together in their small living room, Rahim broached the subject gently. “Lina,” he began, his voice soft but firm, “I think it would be best for you to stay with your parents until the baby comes. They can take care of you, and you’ll be closer to proper medical facilities.”
Lina’s eyes widened, and she shook her head immediately. “No, Rahim. I want to be here with you. I don’t want to be away from you during this time.”
He reached for her hand, squeezing it reassuringly. “I know, love. But I’ve been thinking about it a lot. The shop needs me, and I can’t always be here to take care of you the way you deserve. Your parents can give you the attention and care you need right now.”
Her lips trembled as tears welled up in her eyes. “But what if something happens? What if I need you?”
Rahim leaned in, brushing a tear from her cheek. “I’ll be just a phone call away. And I promise I’ll come back two days before the baby is due. You’ll be in good hands, Lina. Your parents love you, and they’ll take care of you better than I ever could.”
For a long moment, Lina was silent, her fingers tightening around his. Finally, she nodded reluctantly. “Okay,” she whispered.
“But only because you’re making sense.”
Rahim smiled, relief washing over him. “Thank you,” he said softly. “Now, let’s start packing. We’ll leave tomorrow morning.”
The next day, Rahim helped Lina into the cab, carefully loading her bags and all the baby essentials they’d prepared. The three-hour journey was quiet, with Lina resting her head on his shoulder most of the way.
When they arrived at her parents’ home, they were greeted warmly. Her mother enveloped Lina in a tight hug, her eyes misty with emotion. “Oh, my dear girl! We’re so happy to have you here. And we can’t wait to meet our grandchild!”
Her father shook Rahim’s hand firmly. “You made the right decision, son. We’ll take good care of her,” he assured him.
Rahim spent the next two nights helping Lina settle into her old bedroom. He added a baby cot and made sure all the necessary items were in place. Lina’s younger brother, Arif, was also there, eager to help wherever he could.
On the second evening, as Rahim prepared to leave, Lina clung to him. “Can’t you stay a little longer?” she pleaded, her voice tinged with sadness.
He cupped her face in his hands, his gaze steady. “I wish I could, Lina. But the shop needs me. It’s the only way we can provide for our baby.”
She nodded, though her eyes were still full of worry. “Promise me you’ll take care of yourself. Eat well and get enough rest.”
“I promise,” he said, pulling her into a tender embrace. “And I’ll call you every day. I’ll be back two days before the baby is due. I won’t miss it for the world.”
Her parents stood nearby, her mother wiping away a tear. “Don’t worry, Lina,” she said. “We’ll keep you busy and distracted until then.”
With one last kiss goodbye, Rahim climbed into the cab and headed home. As the car pulled away, he felt a mix of emotions relief that Lina was safe and cared for, but also a pang of loneliness knowing she wouldn’t be by his side for the next few weeks.
When he returned to their empty apartment, he was struck by how quiet it felt without her. But he reminded himself that this was for the best. He poured himself into work at the shop, determined to keep it running smoothly while counting down the days until he could be with Lina again.
