Me – No sir, I…I’m sorry…. It was a mistake! My voice came out as a strangled squeak.
Lady – Wait a minute, Amar. What did you say? who is your wife, you idiot. I’m just your friend.
Man – Really darling! After all we have done last night, four times, remember four times, that’s how you treat me? Last night you were calling me hubby, darling, baby, daddy…you called me daddy, fuck me hard…. harder….
Lady – Control your mouth Amar…there is a kid here, you idiot.
Man – Kid? This is not a kid. I know boys at this age like mature and older woman more. I’m pretty sure he must be fond of aunties that’s why he knowingly bumped onto you, so that he could feel your body. I mean…I did it during my teenage days.
Lady – Auntie? You idiot, Do I look like an auntie to you? If I’m old, then go to your wife then, why bother me?
Man – No darling, I’m talking about this young fellow. What he would be thinking, not me.
Me – No…No sir, I…. I…...It happened by mistake; I didn’t mean it. I’m sorry mam, I promise, I was rushing towards the counter. My mom is there. If you want…...
I trailed off, lost for words, my voice cracking with desperation. Just then, a new voice cut through the increasingly tense atmosphere. This one was calmer, deeper, laced with an easy authority that instantly drew my attention.
Another man - Woah! What’s going on Amar? Why are you troubling this boy? What happened Pallavi?
Lady – It nothing dear, this boy just bumped onto me by mistake. He was looking for his mother. Amar is unnecessarily troubling him. He is innocent.
Man – Nope I don’t believe it. Aditya, I’m pretty sure, this is a playboy and he knowingly jumped upon Pallavi, so that he could touch her and feel her. I mean look at her, she is so sexy, who wouldn’t jump upon her. I understand your feeling boy, that’s why I have been bumping all over her last night.
And then, he winked at me.
Now another lady joined them and they all started laughing for some reason, which I didn’t understand. So much things have happened in these few minutes that my head felt like it would explode in fear and tension.
Lady – Hehheehe! Chee Yadava! (slang in Telugu) You’re such a character, Amar. How could you be so vulgar in front of a kid?
Man – He is not a kid. Stop calling him a kid. He is a teenager. He probably has crush on you. Most probably on your peach shaped ass.
Another lady – What? Why is everyone so fond of Pallavi? I do have nice ass too. I’m I not attractive boy? She pivoted, striking a pose that was probably meant to be alluring, I guess. She was definitely, the prettiest woman I came across in my entire life.

Me – Y…yes Mam you are. I choked out, my voice barely above a whisper, my eyes darting frantically between her and the floor.
Another lady – Awwww… thank youuuu…. hhehhe! your good looking too. But that clothes you are wearing sucks, wear those you’re holding on your arm. Wear colour of love! Wear something vibrant my love.
Another man – Oh honey! You’re so out of your mind. You’re so drunk haahah!
Another lady – No I’m fine! I want to buy few clothes for this boy. Will you help me, Pallavi?
Lady – yeah, why not? That would be fun.
Me – No mam, I have selected already, please let me go.
Another lady – What? You choose already?
Man – Yeah, I know he choose my wife’s ass.
Lady – Stop calling me your wife, you idiot!
Another lady – What? You choose Pallavi over me? Now I will not let you go, unless you tell me, what you found in Pallavi more appealing than me?
Man – Yeah!
Me – Nothing…. I didn’t do any such things. please let me go mam. I…It was a mistake sir. I’m sorry! Please I’m sorry. Let me go!
Another man – Hey calm down boy! don’t be so tensed. What’s your name? We are just playing around. That guy is Amar; he is very funny man. Don’t take his words seriously.
Man – Yeah! This is my sexy wife, Pallavi. Say sorry sincerely to my wife, for kneading her peach shaped ass like this.
Lady – Ouch! Ah! Amar, you naughty bastard. (She shrieked, batting his hand away, a genuine laugh escaping her now.)
For record, I’m not your wife and (Her eyes, still sparkling with amusement, met mine) this boy never touched anywhere near like you. He just hit my arm, so he is definitely innocent. Aditya, perfectly understood the situation and handled well, unlike you creating unnecessary situations.
The tipsy lady, whose name I still didn't know, laughed again, a bright, clear sound now that the tension had broken. "See, I told you he was innocent! And he's cute too! Let's get him some new clothes, Pallavi!"
Just then, mom and Venkat arrived. I guess, they heard my voice.
Mom – What happened Sunil?
Me – Mom I just…...
Another lady – Hello madam, myself Priya. Are you, his mother?
Mom – Yes! Did he do something?
Another lady – No, your child is so sweet. Actually, I and my friend Pallavi were helping him get some nice dress and have fun.
Lady – Yeah, he is being very nice.
Mom – Oh thank you for helping my son but I can handle it. That’s my son, I will choose, what he will wear not some strange woman.
Another lady – Seriously, he is grown up and you should let him wear my choice. Don’t be so possessive lady. I want to make him more handsome like Aditya.
Mom – What? Who are you again?
Another man – Sorry mam, my wife is not well, she is bit drunk. I’m sorry for my wife, please don’t mind her word.
Lady – What? Aditya! What are you saying? I’m your wife, not her.
Venkat – Okay! Who is whose wife here? What is your issue with my brother?
Another lady – Hehheh! Heeehhe! No Issue, I’m in love with your brother. I’m in love with your son. I’m in love with everyone.
Mom – What?! (With surprised and anger fuming on her face)
Another man – Stop Priya. She is just drunk madam. I’m sorry! we will be leaving. Amar, hold Pallavi and let’s go to room. Come on let’s go.
I don’t know what just happened. I even don’t know what they all told about me. But I could definitely tell that mom wasn’t happy about it.
Mom – Who is she Sunil? Who is she? (Mom looked very angry. I have never seen her look so agitated and anger before. Her lips were trembling as she was biting her teeth’s)
Me – Mom, I promise I don’t her. I don’t know any of them. (Honestly, I got very scared seeing mom in such anger state)
Mom – Then what all was she saying about you. Huh?! Why will she love my son?
Me – Believe me mom, I just bumped onto her as I was rushing towards the counter. Then I said sorry to them but….
Venkat – That a lie. What story are you cooking Sunil? She said you handsome and love. Who would say that to a stranger?
Me – She is drunk. That big man just now said.
Venkat - Okay she is drunk, but you must know her or else why would she mention you as love. Why would she choose clothes for you?
Me – No, I promise, I don’t know her or anyone of them. She lied! She didn’t choose these T-shirts for me. Mom, please believe in me, I don’t know why that lady said all that.
Mom – Where were you, Sunil? All this time, where were you?
Me – I was here, I was selecting these t-shirts.
Venkat – I didn’t see you here. You were here earlier, but then you disappeared.
Me – I was trying out these T-shirts in the trail room.
Venkat – Is this another part of your stupid story?
Me - No
Venkat – So these T-shirts were selected by those married women’s, right? Don’t lie to me Sunil, I have been at your place. I know how good it feels to see married women’s around you, but trust me you’re not the guy to be hanging out with married women’s. You’re just not that guy.
Just then like an angle, she arrived to save me. Actually I was taken back to hear her sweet voice from behind me.
Mariyam – Sir, Sunil was here, he was just choosing the t-shirt by himself. I saw it, he just bumped mistakenly onto them and they started troubling him. If you want, I can show you security camera footage.
Mom – Wait, who are you now? How do you know my son?
Mariyam – I work here mam. I showed Sunil, all our T-shirt collections. That’s it. But I know he is innocent. He hit that lady by mistake, trying to find you. He wanted to show his t-shirts to you. So, please don’t scold him.
Venkat – For a sales woman, don’t you think you’re talking too much? Don’t tell Geetha, what to do. That’s her son, it’s her wish to scold him or slap him. This is family matter, dumb bitch. Get lost and do your sales.
Me - Venkat! Don’t talk to her like that. Mariyam is working hard for herself. She lives on her own money not on her rich parent’s money like some others. Show some respect towards a working girl!
Venkat – What did you say Sunil? Was that on me, Huh?
Me – You would know it better than me.
Venkat – Huh! Come again, why are you hanging your face down scared wit. Come on, say it on my face.
Me – I…I said it on your face.
Venkat - Did you forget about my punches cuck? Do you want to go home with bloody nose Sunil? Look at me, you weak-ass.
Me – I’m not afraid of you Venkat. Not anymore!
Venkat – Really, are you seeing this Geetha. This pussy got confidence just by taking to some whores. But you forgot you’re a pussy like your dumb father. I’m going to beat your weak ass like a Cherokee drum.
(Although I said something in emotions trying to act strong in front of Mariyam, but by looking at fuming Venkat, I was getting scared. I know, now I will be getting beating like hell. He is really mad. Maybe I spoke too much in emotions.)
Mariyam – If you touch him, I will call security. This is H&M store. No one harms anyone here.
Venkat – Really?! Do it then bitch! Let’s go, do it!
Mom – Stop it, Venkat. This is no place for fight. People are watching us. Please try to calm yourself.
Venkat kept staring angrily at Mariyam then at me while ignoring my mom. Then mom held Venkat’s hand and like a teenage girlfriend brought his hand close to her chest requesting him to calm down.
Mom - For me at least, please Nah. (Honestly, I was feeling so ashamed to see my mother behave such a way in front of Mariyam. I mean how could I ever describe it to her.)
Venkat rushed out of the store in anger.
Then mom asked Mariyam to leave. She gave a look at me and went inside towards her female section.
Mom – Sunil, come let’s go.
Me – Mom, I want to buy these t-shirts. ( I was bit pissed off by now and held my ground)
Mom – I don’t like those colours. It won’t suit on you. We will see in some other store. I will choose for you.
Me – No, I want these only. It looks good on me. I checked it already.
Mom – Sunil, are you serious? You never could choose anything for you. You literally don’t know how to select a piece of cloth or handkerchief. Now you’re saying, you choose t-shirts?!
Me – yes! Does Venkat know how to choose? Why were you helping him, ignoring me?
Mom – Mind your word, Sunil. Don’t talk to me like that.
Me – What wrong did I say? Didn’t you ignore me and went after Venkat? Doesn’t Venkat know about his clothes?
Mom - why are you calling Venkat by his name? He is elder to you, call him Anna like you always do. Show respect to your elders.
Me – Does he show respect to you mom? He calls you Geetha, by your name, not aunty.
Mom – That’s because Venkat grew up in America where they call each other by name. But you were born in India, grew up learning our traditions and culture. Venkat didn’t get much exposure to it, so it’s not his mistake.
Me – Americans call their aunt, with name and adding aunt. I know enough about American’s society and traditions.
Mom – If you know it, why ask me? You should understand Venkat’s position. Think he has to cope with American society as well as Indian traditions. Poor guy has to deal so much.
Me – Venkat is not a poor guy or some kid. He is being in USA since birth. If he can’t cope then I don’t know who can?
Mom – Then forget it. Why are you asking all this in middle of a store? Let’s go.
Me – No, I’m not done mom. I want to know, why Venkat stopped calling you auntie since last year. Because I know very well, he used to call you aunty. What changed last year?
Mom – That’s between him and me; you don’t need to interfere into elder’s matter. Concentrate on your studies and future. Come let’s go, it getting late. We are still in this first store. Let’s check other stores.
As I stood there thinking, she looked back with annoyance and asked ‘Why are you standing still, didn’t I ask you come?
Me - (raising my voice in frustration): "Just buy me these T-shirts! Why won’t you listen?"
Mom - Sunil, I already told you, we will check in another store. I’m not buying you these. You’re my son, I perfectly know those aren’t your choices. You would have chosen either white or black. Not this new fashion with such vivid colours. That’s not yours. Either you tell me the truth or forget it.
Me (exasperated) - "Ugh! I’ve said it a hundred times—I chose these! Why won’t you believe me?"
Mom (stern, eyes narrowing) - And I will deny it hundred times because I gave birth to you. I know my child. Your eyes are telling me, that you’re lying.
Me - "Mom, I’m not lying!"
Mom - Then tell me—who was that married woman? Why was she talking about you like that? Because I heard clearly her saying she loves you. Hun?! Why would any woman love my son?
Me - I don’t know mom! Seriously I don’t know her.
Mom - Sunil, please tell me you are not indulging in any kind of relationship with that married woman?!
Me - What?! God, Mom—you think I’d do something like that? I’m not Venkat.
Mom - What? What was that?
Me - All I’m saying is, I’m just a scared wimp like Venkat said. I tremble with just sight of a girl, let alone indulging with a married woman. Whatever you are thinking, is Venkat’s area of expertise. He indulges with married women and video tapes it to torment other. I don’t fall in that category, mom. I thought you knew me as you always taught me to follow your rules, Indian traditions, most importantly not hurt others.
Mom - What all rubbish are you saying about Venkat, Sunil? When did he say such things?
Me - Just now, in front of you and her.
Mom - Who is her? Sunil?
Me - Mar…ii…. that store girl, who saved me. Venkat called me sacred wimp in front of that girl. He calls me whatever he wants in front of everyone.
Mom - You were the one who commented on him first. He came here to have some fun with us. Why would you say such things? He is your elder brother.
Me - Brother? Venkat? Can you tell me, when did you see him treat me like a brother?
Mom - You were never like this Sunil. What's this really about? What happened to you?
Me - What happened to you mom? Why aren’t you treating me like before? Why aren’t you giving me time? Why are you always taking his side? You’re always busy, always with Venkat.
Mom -I’m not giving you enough time, Sunil? Is that what you saying just because I spent some time with my nephew.
Me - Yes, isn’t it obvious?! Earlier, you’re the one that denied me to help saying busy and all but I saw you selecting clothes for Venkat. Now a days, you don’t have time for me. All you care is only about you. Your private space, your private time.
Mom - How can you say something like that Sunil? I just asked you to select T-shirts. Just this made you think that I don’t care about you?
Me - Of course, mom, what more do I need to think. I can see your priorities changing.
Mom - Sunil, for God’s sake don’t open my mouth. I have been hiding and dealing with my problems already. Please don’t open my mouth.
Me - Why? What’s wrong in it? Did I ask something wrong? You don’t have time for me. Nowadays you don’t have time for dad too. Earlier, we used to video call dad but now you just don’t call him anymore. But now, you don’t even bother about me. Why mom? Why don’t you ask about my college? Why don’t you ask about my daily activities?
Mom’s Voice cracked with her face contorted in pain, and she whispered “Because I’m tired Sunil! I’m tired of serving you and your father. I'm tired of putting everyone else's needs before my own.”
Me - What?!
Mom - You heard me Sunil, I’m tired of serving you and your father my whole life. From the day I married your father, my job was to serve him. Then you were born, and my job was to serve you both. My dreams, my career, my friends… everything was sacrificed on the altar of this family. Your father asked me to work overtime for your future. Half my life is gone, spent making sure you two were comfortable. But what about my comfort? What about my happiness? Am I not a person, Sunil? Am I not allowed to want things? Can’t I have desires? I’m I just some machine?
Me - What are you saying mom? I’m your son? Don’t you love me?
Mom - Do you love me as your mother Sunil? Did you ever think about my wishes, my desire? What I want in my life? How was my office? I’m I okay or tensed or not feeling well? No, because for you, my problems, my wishes don’t exist just like it doesn’t exist for your father. Can’t I do anything except serving you and your father?
HUH! All my life, I kept you dearer, cared for you more than anyone, thinking you will be close to me. Anticipating, you will understand me, when you grow up. Believing that, you will be different than your father. At last, you grew up just like him.
Me - Why are you talking so much against Dad? I know he is little busy and you were the one that used to explain me that he is working hard for the family.
Mom - And I was lying! Lying to you, lying to myself. I am done with the lies. Your father doesn’t care about me or you.
Me - No Mom, Dad cares about us. He is my father. He took care of me; he took care of you….
Mom - (Cutting me off sharply) "He cares? Tell me, who dropped you at college every single morning? Who nursed you through fevers all night? Who went to every parent-teacher meeting? Who is standing here arguing with you right now, Sunil? Me! It’s always been me!"
Me - Dad is always busy with work mom. Why are you complaining to me now?
Mom - Because earlier you were kid, now you are going to college. Now you’re buying stuffs chosen by your married girlfriend, ignoring me just like your father did. There your father is always in Bangalore. I don’t know, with whom he is? I don’t even have rights to question him. Now, you, whom I loved more than anything is going on same path. A married woman for God shakes! Now I’m all alone.
Me - Stop it mom, I said it already, I don’t know that woman. It’s because of your strictness that, I never went near any girl. My leg wobble like chickens seeing a girl. Let alone talking one and even talking to a married woman.
Mom (Her voice drops, dangerously quiet) "So this is my fault. I raised you wrong. Is that what you’re saying?"
Me - Yes, I’m going to be twenty years old and I can’t even talk to a girl. Makes sense why Venkat calls me a scared wimp. Now that I choose a T-shirt, you won’t even buy it for me. I don’t know what I’m going to do and it’s all because of you.
Mom - Don’t you feel ashamed to even think about it. What happened to you? How could you say such shameful words to your mother?!
Me - A mother, that praises Venkat’s strength and manliness, but all while kept her own son like a rat in a hole. I don’t know life outside this city. It’s all thanks to you. Now, that finally I choose a T-shirt for myself. That too, you can’t allow it because you want me to live like a dormant forever.
Mom - I heard enough Sunil! Fine, you want to buy those T-shirts, right?
Mom stood still and stared at me for a long, silent moment. The anger in her eyes is replaced by a cold, clear resolution. She walks to her purse, takes out a roll of cash and the house keys, and harshly puts them in my pocket.
Mom - Here take this money and house keys and don’t be dormant anymore, live your life as you wish. Buy those T-shirt or anything for that woman, do anything you want.
I’m fed up serving you and your father while getting nothing in return. I can’t believe you choose that strange woman over your own mother.
Me (Stunned) - "Choose? I'm not choosing anyone over you! I just wanted these T-shirts for myself!"
Mom Shakes her head, a single tear finally tracing a path down her cheek. “It was never about the T-shirt, Sunil. Do, whatever you want. I don’t care anymore. This is the end, okay. You said, what you want. Now I’m saying what I want for myself. I want to be left alone. I don’t want you or your father in my life anymore. Now I will live my life without any string.
Me - Mom, please... don't talk like that," I begged, my voice cracking. "I won't buy the shirt, I promise. Just... please don't leave me here alone. Where would I even go?
Mom - Go and buy whatever you want or go home. I already gave you house keys. But please, from now on, don’t bother me.
But mom……
Mom - Please Sunil, if you love me as your mother. Then leave me alone. I want some private space. You are the….
Just then, Venkat entered the store and came near us. The smug look on his face told me he'd heard everything.
"Leave it Geetha, don't let him ruin the night," Venkat said, dbanging a possessive arm around my mother's shoulders. "He's not worth it. Let's not waste another minute on this. Come on, let’s have our fun."
"You're right," she said, leaning into him and turning her back on me completely. "I'm done with all this... this nuisance. I had enough!"
Together, they turned and glided onto the escalator, ascending to the first floor without a backward glance. I was rooted to the spot, a column of ice in the middle of the bustling store.
I was dumbstruck and stood like a mannequin. I didn’t know what to say. I don’t know, what happened so suddenly? What did I say to mom? Why did she react to ferally?!
