Messages from Sisters
Varnika and Meghana sat in the living room, the late afternoon light filtering in through the window, casting a warm glow over the space.
Each was holding her phone, the stillness between them holding a tension that neither dared to break.
Meghana typed first, her fingers moving with quiet certainty.
“Hey Abhi, would you like to join us for dinner tonight? We’re making something special.” She hit send,
Then set the phone down beside her, feeling the faintest ripple of anticipation in the air.
Varnika followed suit, her message more direct.
“Abhi, would you mind giving me a ride to the university this afternoon?
I’ll be done in a couple of hours, and it would be great to catch up on the way.”
She quickly added a smiley face at the end, a small attempt to keep it casual,
Though she knew it wasn’t just about the ride anymore.
There was something heavier beneath her words, something she couldn’t yet name.
For a moment, the two sisters sat in silence, each waiting.
Varnika shifted her gaze toward Meghana, who was absently swirling her tea.
Both women knew what was coming, though neither of them fully understood what it would mean.
Abhi’s reply came almost immediately, but he responded to them separately, as expected.
Abhi’s Message to Meghana:
“I’d love to join you both for dinner. What time should I come over?”
Meghana’s lips curved into a soft smile as she read the message.
She didn’t respond right away, instead glancing at Varnika.
“Looks like he’s in,” she said, her tone light, though there was a deeper understanding behind the words.
Varnika, her attention on her phone, waited for the reply from Abhi.
She had to remind herself to breathe as she stared at the screen.
When it came, it was exactly as she had hoped.
Abhi’s Message to Varnika:
“I’m free around 2 PM, I can give you a ride then.”
Varnika’s heart skipped a beat.
She quickly tapped out a response, trying to keep her voice light.
“Great, I’ll be ready. See you then.”
She tucked her phone into her pocket, trying to ignore the flutter in her chest.
The ride to the university would only take a few minutes, but for some reason, it felt like the longest trip of her life.
Meghana looked over at her sister, sensing the mix of emotions just beneath her calm exterior.
“You okay?” she asked softly, though she already knew the answer.
Varnika smiled, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Yeah, just... ready.”
They both knew this was more than just a ride to the university.
It was the start of something neither of them could predict.
