She sat cross-legged on her bed, staring at the city lights through the window.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Abhi.

[Abhi – 11:40 PM]
“You were impossible at dinner. That papad theft was a criminal offense.”

She stared at it, then smiled — just a little.

[Varnika – 11:41 PM]
“You’re lucky I didn’t rob your brownie.”

A pause.

Her fingers hovered. 

She typed… deleted. Then slowly wrote again.

[Varnika – 11:43 PM]
“I don’t know if I was trying too hard tonight. But it felt nice to feel normal again.”

Abhi read the message twice.

[Abhi – 11:44 PM]
“You weren’t trying. You were normal. Just… you.”

There was silence. And then...

[Varnika – 11:46 PM]
“You know that time I said I was fine with everything?”
“I still am.”
“But now I know what I said.”


He read it slowly. Carefully.

[Abhi – 11:48 PM]
“That’s the difference between saying it, and living it.”


[Varnika – 11:49 PM]
“Exactly.”


Another pause.

[Varnika – 11:50 PM]
“Sleep well, Mr. Brownie Victim.”


[Abhi – 11:50 PM]
“Only if the brownie thief lets me.”


She smiled into the dark.

[Varnika – typing…]

Then stopped.

Instead, she turned off the light, pulling the blanket up, heartbeat steady now. 

The warmth between the three of them, fragile, but real,

Was beginning to thread itself into something lasting.
