She always left just enough unsaid.
Ravi:
“That depends. How do you usually make up to people at midnight?”
Neetu:
“Wouldn’t you love to know.”
A beat.
Neetu:
“Okay, tell me something... What would you want from me right now? If you could ask for anything, without thinking of rules.”
It was bold. More direct than their earlier games.
But Ravi didn’t flinch.
Ravi:
“A little honesty, maybe. Not the Bhabhi mask. Just you. What you’re really thinking.”
There was a delay before the next message.
Neetu:
“I was thinking… today you didn’t look like someone who needed company. But somehow, you made all of us want to be around you.”
He let that settle in.
There was something disarming about her tone tonight.
A little less teasing.
A little more real.
Ravi:
“That’s probably the nicest thing anyone’s said to me all week.”
Neetu:
“Don’t get used to it. Compliments are rare. Just like sleep these days.”
Ravi:
“Is that why you’re texting me instead?”
Neetu:
“Maybe. Or maybe because you were looking too good at dinner and I wanted to undo your calm smile a bit.”
Ravi:
“Mission accomplished. I haven’t smiled this much all day.”
There was a long pause. Then:
Neetu:
“Goodnight, Mr. Calm Smile. Don’t dream too sweet... unless I’m in it.”
He stared at the screen even after the message faded into stillness.
