No warning.
His mouth found hers.
Deep. Urgent. Quietly desperate.
The kiss was full of all the things he hadn’t been able to say the whole evening.
Of the way her glances steadied him.
Of the way her calm had made space for everything that unfolded tonight.
Her hands came up slowly, fingertips grazing his jaw,
Holding him with the same softness and certainty that had always lived between them.
She kissed him back, not as a question, but as a fact.
Like something known.
Something theirs.
When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers.
Their breaths mingled in the warm kitchen air.
“I missed you,” he whispered. “All evening.”
Madhavi’s eyes flickered open, soft and amused. “I was in the same room.”
“I know,” he murmured. “That’s what made it harder.”
She smiled faintly, brushing her thumb against his lips.
“You were… incredible tonight,” he said, voice low.
“The way you made space for Shruti. The way you didn’t flinch. The way you knew exactly what I needed before I did.”
She looked at him, expression calm. “You needed lightness. Curiosity. Distraction.”
“And you.” he added softly. “I still need you. No matter who else is around.”
Her smile deepened, but it didn’t reach her eyes this time.
“I know,” she whispered.
He kissed her again, softer this time, slow. With reverence.
His hand resting on the side of her neck, thumb grazing behind her ear.
When they parted again, he asked, “Are you okay?”
Madhavi looked at him fully now. “Yes. I’m exactly where I want to be.”
She touched his chest lightly, right over his heartbeat.
“And so are you.”
