Abhi was still at Meghana’s apartment.

The sky had turned a rich indigo outside the living room window,

And the soft yellow light of the lamps inside created a cocoon of intimacy.

They were quiet, both dressed now,

Lounging on the couch with two cups of herbal tea

Fingers occasionally brushing.

The sound of Meghana’s phone vibrating broke the stillness.

She picked it up from the coffee table.

It was a message. From Varnika.


Varnika:
Hi akka. I hope you’re doing okay. I wanted to let you know… I’ll be coming back tomorrow morning.
I feel better now. Clearer.
And I think I’m ready to talk.


Meghana’s breath caught slightly. She stared at the screen for a moment before gently passing it to Abhi.

He read it slowly. Then looked at Meghana. There was no smile

Just a quiet tightening in his chest.

“She’s coming back,” Meghana said softly.

“She said she’s feeling better,” Abhi murmured. “That’s… a good thing.”

Meghana set the phone down and leaned forward, her elbows on her knees, her fingers laced.

“She’s brave,” she whispered. “To come back like this.”

Abhi nodded. “She didn’t have to. But she chose to.”

There was a long pause.

Then Meghana glanced at him, her voice lower now. “What are you feeling, Abhi?”

He met her gaze. Honest. Open. 

“A little afraid. A little relieved. But mostly… I’m hoping we haven’t lost her.”


Meghana looked down at her hands. 

“We won’t. But we might not get her back in the same way.”


Abhi sat closer and placed a hand over hers. 

“Maybe this is where the real honesty begins.”
