Friday Night – Return of the Husband
The sharp trill of the doorbell echoed through the hallway of Flat 205.
Priya looked up from the stove, heart skipping, just slightly.
Not from excitement, not from fear,
But the kind of pause the body takes when life resumes its usual rhythm.
She washed her hands, composed her face, and opened the door.
Amit stood there with his usual crooked smile,
Duffel bag in one hand and a bottle of mango juice in the other.
“Thought this might earn me some brownie points,” he said, holding up the bottle.
Priya let out a small laugh and moved aside. “You’ll need more than juice for that.”
The home was warm, quiet, still wrapped in the softness of evening.
“Where’s Ravi?” Amit asked, setting his bag down.
“In his room,” she said simply. “He came home a bit early today. Work from home.”
Inside, the house smelled of curry leaves and onions. “Smells like heaven in here.”
“You’ll get to eat it too,” Priya said with a smile.
“But only if you freshen up first.”
“Bossy wife,” he teased.
“And still you came back.”
They all chuckled.
Amit nodded. “I’ll go freshen up.”
