Chapter 8: Prabas (Act 1)
Lina, felt the urgent need to relieve herself. The bus she was on wouldn't be stopping for another three hours, so she turned to Prabas, the kind-eyed bus driver. "Prabas," she began, her voice barely above a whisper, "I need to use the restroom. Could we possibly make an unscheduled stop?" Prabas, his eyes filled with concern, nodded in understanding.
They found themselves at a deserted rest area, the only sounds coming from the rustling leaves and the distant hum of the bus engine. Lina felt a shiver of nervousness run down her spine. She turned to Prabas, her voice barely audible, "Would you mind accompanying me? Just in case..." Her eyes darted towards Sonnu, the lecherous bus conductor who had been eyeing her since the journey began. Prabas, understanding her unspoken fear, nodded and followed her towards the restroom.
As Prabas sat on a nearby bench, Lina stepped into the dimly lit restroom. The air was thick with tension, and she could feel her heart pounding in her chest. She quickly did her business and stepped out, her heart still racing. She let out a soft gasp as she heard a sudden noise, her eyes widening in fear. Prabas, hearing her gasp, called out from outside, "Lina, is everything alright?" She replied with a shy, "Yes, just a stray cat."
Lina walked over to Prabas, who was enjoying a quiet smoke. They sat in silence for a moment before Prabas broke the silence. "I've seen the way Sonnu looks at you," he began, his voice filled with concern. "I feel powerless sometimes. My conscience doesn't allow me to stand by and let him do the same to you." Lina looked at him, her eyes filled with gratitude.
Prabas continued, "He bragged about almost... taking advantage of you on the last trip. You were wearing a sleeping mask, and the bus braked suddenly. I... I braked on purpose. I couldn't let him ruin your honor."
Prabas then shared a secret with Lina. He had spiked Sonnu's drink with sleeping pills today to ensure that he would pose no harm to Lina.
Lina felt tears prick her eyes. She reached out and hugged Prabas, her heart filled with gratitude.
Prabas pulled away from the hug, his eyes meeting Lina's. "Your perfume," he began, his voice filled with longing, "it reminds me of my wife. Lina chuckled, "Is that a good thing?" Prabas smiled, "Very much so. I rarely get to spend time with her, you know. I'm always on the road, earning money for our kids' education. I miss her."
Lina could see the longing in his eyes, the pain of being away from his loved ones. She realized that beneath his tough exterior, he was just a man trying to do right by his family.
"You're a lucky man, Prabas," Lina said, her voice soft. "Your wife is fortunate to have you."
Prabas chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that made Lina smile. "I was a looker in my younger days, you know," he said, pulling out a worn photograph from his wallet. Lina took it, her eyes widening as she saw a young, handsome Prabas, his hair full and dark, his body lean and muscular.
"Oh, my," Lina said, laughing. "If I were single, I'd have certainly given you a chase."
Prabas joined her laughter, his eyes sparkling with mirth. "But alas, you're not." he said, taking the photograph back. His smile faded as he noticed the sadness in Lina's eyes. "What's troubling you, Lina?"
Lina looked away, her eyes welling up with tears. "It's Rahim and me," she said, her voice trembling. "We've been trying for a child, but it's just not happening."
Prabas nodded, his face filled with sympathy. "I know how much that hurts," he said. "Every wife aspires to be a mother. I've seen it in my own wife's eyes."
Lina nodded, wiping away her tears. "We've tried everything, Prabas. Doctors, treatments, everything. But nothing seems to work."
Prabas placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "I understand, Lina. It's a tough journey, but don't lose hope. Miracles happen every day."
Lina looked at him, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Prabas. You're a good man."
