“How are you?” he asked, his voice softer than usual.
Too careful.
She tilted her head. “You’re asking like it’s been weeks.”
“Feels like it,” he said, eyes searching hers.
A silence passed between them.
“I was... giving space,” she said, turning toward the kitchen, “in case what happened on Sunday felt... too much.”
Abhi followed her with his eyes, not his feet. “It did feel too much. But not in the wrong way.”
She paused at the counter. Her hand stilled over a ladle.
“I know,” she whispered.
For a long minute, neither moved.
Only the sound of the ceiling fan overhead filled the stillness.
Then she turned, leaning gently against the counter. “Sandeep’s working late.”
“Some urgent delivery tomorrow.”
“He’ll eat at the site.”
Abhi stepped closer.
Not much.
Just enough.
“Good to have someone to eat with,” she said, eyes on him now. “Even if it’s just Routi and curry tonight.”
He smiled, that same lopsided one he always had when her softness caught him off guard. “I’ll take it.”
