She added, gaze steady now. “I just needed a few days. To breathe. To feel it without rushing into guilt.”
He reached for the wall, leaning gently. “And now?”
Madhavi looked at him. A faint smile played on her lips, playful, just full of quiet surrender. “Now I miss talking to you.”
He smiled faintly, eyes softening.
He nodded gently. “It meant something to me too, Madhavi.”
She exhaled slowly.
Then her expression softened, just slightly. “Sandeep’s working late tonight. Some call with his overseas client.” Her fingers toyed with the hem of her bag as she added, “I made too much curry … and rotis. Amma’s recipe.”
Abhi’s brows lifted slightly. He didn’t smile, but his eyes did.
“You hungry?” she asked, looking at his door, then back at him.
“I could eat,” he said quietly.
She turned toward her door, her voice low. “Give me ten minutes. I’ll knock.”
Abhi nodded. “Okay.”
Their eyes held for a second longer. Unspoken emotions suspended gently between them.
And then she slipped into her flat, door closing softly behind her.
Abhi stood alone, pulse calm but stirring.
The cool air of the corridor didn’t help.
Because the warmth that stirred inside him now had little to do with dinner.
