Thursday Morning – Between Distance and Dignity
Abhi stood downstairs beside the scooter
Freshly changed and still carrying the aftertaste of something unspoken from upstairs.
The streets were just waking up.
A soft morning haze hung over the gated lane, light pooling over damp leaves and glinting gently off his helmet mirror.
He looked up, expecting to see her walking down with her usual lightness.
But when Varnika appeared near the building entrance, something had changed.
She wore a sharp-cut kurti over jeans, her hair tied high in a ponytail.
Her expression was calm.
Composed.
But there was a certain stillness in her movements, like someone walking on quiet glass, not quite letting the world hear her footfall.
Abhi gave a faint smile. “Ready?”
She looked at the scooter. Then at him.
Her lips parted like she might say something playful, but she didn’t.
Instead, she lifted her phone and gave a soft nod. “I booked a cab,” she said simply.
A pause.
