I wiped my hands lightly against my pant,
adjusted my dupatta once,
and turned around.
My body moved lazily,
still half floating in the slow afternoon heat.
I started walking back toward the lift.
The sandals slapped softly against the cement as I moved.
Reached lift, entered, pressed 7, it started moving.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The lift stopped with a soft sound.
I came out slowly.
The air outside was hot.
My skin was sticky.
My chudi was sticking to my back and legs.
I walked slowly to my house.
Every step I took, there was a small pain inside my lower stomach.
I took out the key.
Opened the door.
The smell of home came to me —
soap smell, cooking smell, and the smell of old cotton curtains.
I went inside.
Closed the door.
Put the latch.
I kept my sandals near the door.
Walked slowly to the kitchen side.
My hand was pressing my stomach softly.
I went near the calendar.
I turned the page.
I saw the small red circle on today’s date.
I smiled slowly.
I understood.
It was my period time.
That is why there was pain.
I turned and went to the bedroom.
The pain was pulling inside my thighs and back also.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Inside the bedroom, I removed my chudi slowly.
The pant was stuck to my legs because of the sweat.
The top was also sticking.
I removed my bra also.
I dropped all clothes in the laundry basket.
I went to the bathroom.
Took a quick bath.
The cool water made me feel better.
After coming out, I wiped my body.
I wore a fresh panty with a napkin inside.
Then I wore my soft blue cotton nighty.
It was floating around my body.
Soft.
Loose.
I tied my hair in a bun.
I came to the bed.
I laid down under the fan.
The fan was spinning slowly.
The air was moving on my skin.
My lower stomach was still paining.
But the bed was cool.
I closed my eyes.
Rested.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Around 6 PM, the door opened.
I heard footsteps.
Bag kept on the sofa.
I opened my eyes slowly.
Arjun was there.
He had come from office.
He looked at me and came closer.
"Anni... are you okay?" he asked softly.
I smiled a little.
"I got my periods, da. Little pain is there," I said.
He looked worried.
"Should I get medicine, anni?" he asked.
I shook my head.
"No need da. I just need to rest."
He stood for one second.
Then he said nicely:
"I will order dinner today, anni. You take rest."
I smiled softly.
Said, "Okay da."
He pulled his mobile.
Started ordering food.
I closed my eyes again.
The pain was still there, but I felt peaceful.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The nighty was brushing lightly on my body.
I heard Arjun moving around quietly in the hall.
---------------------------------------------------------------
At 8 PM, he called softly:
"Anni... come da, food has come."
I got up slowly.
There was a small pull in my stomach when I moved.
I came to the table.
The nighty was floating around my legs.
The smell of food was nice.
Fried rice, parotta, gravy were kept neatly.
I sat opposite to Arjun.
We both ate slowly.
No big talking.
Just small smiles.
Arjun was looking at me now and then.
Worried, but not speaking anything.
After eating, Arjun picked up the plates.
Went and washed them.
I felt soft inside.
He was behaving very good.
Caring.
I smiled slowly.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I came back to the bedroom.
Laid down again.
The fan was making slow noise.
The house was silent.
The pain was pulling inside my lower back.
I hugged the pillow to my stomach.
Closed my eyes.
Inside my panty, the napkin was sitting quietly.
The blood was flowing little by little.
The nighty was touching my body softly.
Slowly, the sleep came.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Morning.
Sunlight was coming through the window.
I opened my eyes slowly.
The pain had come down now.
Only a little tiredness was there.
I stretched my hands.
Sat up on the bed.
The nighty was floating around my legs.
I went to bathroom.
Freshened up.
Changed into a fresh napkin and clean panty.
Wore a soft green chudi.
The house smelled clean.
Morning soap smell, floor cleaner smell, little tea smell.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The next four days went like a slow river.
Morning time —
talked to kids on phone.
They were shouting, fighting, laughing.
Evening time —
small talks with Arjun.
He brought fruits once.
Sometimes we had tea together, sitting near the balcony.
No big talking.
No teasing.
Arjun never spoke about the card game or the dare.
He was behaving nicely.
Softly.
With respect.
And I also behaved normal.
I smiled softly.
I moved around slowly.
I did small small house work.
Inside my body, the blood became less every day.
By fourth day night, it stopped fully.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Friday evening.
I stood under the shower.
The water was cool.
My body felt fresh.
My periods were over.
I came out.
Dried myself.
I wore fresh cotton panty, and petticoat and tied it snugly.
Wore a soft golden blouse with bra.
I took the orange saree.
Dbangd it neatly.
Made clean pleats.
Pinned the pallu nicely over my chest.
I applied small round red bindi.
Wore simple gold jhumkas.
Tied my hair into a soft braid.
Ready for temple.
I looked at the mirror once.
The woman inside the mirror smiled back.
Simple.
Clean.
Calm.
But deep inside, a small slow naughty song was still singing.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I checked my bag once more.
I adjusted my orange saree again.
Tucked the pleats properly.
Made sure the pallu was sitting nicely across my chest.
I picked up my small handbag.
Kept the keys inside.
Wore my simple slippers.
I was ready to go to the temple.
I walked slowly toward the door.
The evening light was falling inside the house softly.
The fan above was moving lazily.
Just as I touched the latch,
I remembered Anusha.
Maybe she would also like to come to temple.
I smiled.
Picked up my mobile and called her.
The phone rang only once.
"Hello Pavi!" she answered cheerfully.
I smiled hearing her voice.
"Anusha, I'm going to temple. Want to join?" I asked simply.
"Yes! I was just getting ready. Give me five minutes," she said quickly.
"Okay," I said.
I kept the phone back inside my bag.
Smiled softly.
It would be nice to have her company.
The clock showed 5:55 PM.
---------------------------------------------------------------
After few minutes, the door opened.
Footsteps came inside.
It was Arjun.
He looked tired but fresh —
bag on one shoulder, hair messy, shirt creased.
"Hi anni," he said with a smile.
I smiled back.
"Hi," I said softly.
His eyes moved over me once.
I was standing there —
orange saree dbangd neatly,
small red bindi,
fresh jasmine flowers tucked behind my ear.
I saw the change in his face.
A small extra happiness lit up his eyes.
His smile became warmer.
I adjusted my pallu lightly.
"I'm going to temple," I said.
He nodded quickly.
"Carry on anni. I'll freshen up," he said nicely.
He dropped his bag on the sofa and went to his room.
I smiled to myself.
Picked up my bag properly.
I opened the door.
Stepped outside.
Locked the door properly.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I waited near the lift.
The corridor was silent.
Evening air was soft and warm.
Within two-three minutes, Anusha came.
She was wearing a tight-fitting light green chudi.
Her pant matched perfectly.
A thin dupatta was hanging from her neck.
Her face was fresh.
Her cheeks slightly pink.
Hair tied into a small neat ponytail.
She smiled brightly at me.
"Hi Pavi!" she said.
I smiled wide.
"Hi. You are looking very cute today," I said warmly.
The moment I said it,
Anusha's cheeks became red.
She dropped her eyes shyly to the floor.
A soft shy smile played on her lips.
She was blushing nicely.
Looking even cuter now.
Then after one second, she looked up again.
Her eyes moved slowly over me.
"You are even cuter, Pavi," she said softly.
Her voice was full of honest admiration.
"No one can beat you today. You are looking beautiful."
I smiled, feeling a small warmth in my cheeks too.
She stepped closer, looking at my saree.
"And the way you have worn the saree... so perfect. It is sitting so nicely on you," she said happily.
Her eyes were shining with true appreciation.
I laughed softly.
"Thank you," I said.
Inside, I felt a small proud feeling.
It felt nice.
It felt sweet.
Not like romance.
Not like attraction.
Just pure innocent girl-to-girl happiness.
Simple admiration.
---------------------------------------------------------------
"Come," I said softly.
We both walked to the lift.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The lift came within few seconds.
We both stepped inside.
I pressed the 'G' button.
The lift doors closed slowly with a soft sound.
Inside the lift, it was quiet.
Only soft soap smell from Anusha’s chudi and cotton smell from my saree floated in the air.
She stood beside me.
Her dupatta touched my arm lightly when the lift moved slightly.
---------------------------------------------------------------
My bag hung from my shoulder.
My mind was floating slowly —
temple thoughts, soft saree brushing my waist, evening breeze feeling cool against my arms.
Without thinking much,
my eyes moved casually.
Just a small glance.
A soft habit.
Searching for someone.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The lift reached ground floor.
Doors opened with a soft ding.
We both stepped out.
While walking normally beside Anusha,
without showing anything,
my eyes casually searched once.
For security.
For Prakash.
Just a soft look.
Just a silent search.
But I didn’t slow my steps.
I didn’t turn my head openly.
I kept walking beside Anusha —
smiling lightly at her simple small talks.
---------------------------------------------------------------
