Vanitha woke early, finding Vinith asleep beside her—a fleeting comfort. She shifted closer, resting her head on his chest, feeling his heartbeat—its warmth briefly soothed her. Vinith mumbled in his sleep.
Vinith: "Why’re you up so early?"
Vanitha asked softly.
Vanitha: "When did you get back?"
Vinith, eyes closed, replied.
Vinith: "Just now. Need to rest till noon. Work pressure."
Vanitha, voice weary, said.
Vanitha: "Same here."
Vinith hugged her gently, reassuring.
Vinith: "I get it, Vanitha. We both have to grind now. Don’t worry, Amma will help. She said Monday’s a holiday, and tomorrow, Saturday evening, she’s taking the kids to Dad’s. I’m off on a business trip this weekend, back Monday noon. Rest all Sunday, no disturbances."
Vanitha murmured.
Vanitha: "Okay."
She lay on his chest for an hour—his heartbeat offered temporary calm, but dread of her deal with Mani loomed. Rising, she chose a black saree and blouse from the wardrobe, dressed for the office, and left with a heavy smile while Vinith slept.
At the quarters, Mani and Sumithra greeted her at the entrance. Vanitha ignored Mani, trying to seem normal, and asked Sumithra.
Vanitha: "Sumithra, how’s your son now?"
Sumithra smiled faintly.
Sumithra: "He’s better, madam, but doctors say to stay cautious."
Vanitha nodded, entered, sat at her desk, and began routine work—organizing files, preparing reports, desperate to lose herself in tasks. But her deal with Mani consumed her—her eyes on the screen, her thoughts circled the terrifying tomorrow.
At lunch, Vanitha, Sumithra, and Mani sat at the dining table—Mani set out hotel-bought biryani. Sumithra shared worries about her son’s health.
Sumithra: "Madam, medicine costs are the issue now. But the doctor’s hopeful."
Vanitha nodded absently, her mind elsewhere—Sumithra’s words barely registered. The deal, the video’s threat, and the risk to her reputation tormented her. Sumithra, lost in her own concerns, missed Vanitha’s silence. Mani sat quietly, glancing at Vanitha—she completely avoided him.
By 4 PM, Sumithra stood, apologizing.

Vanitha forced a smile.
