A Promise Renewed

Vanitha stood naked in the bathroom, hot water cascading over her—its warmth offered fleeting relief, but guilt surged back, gripping her mind. I broke my resolve again, her thoughts accused, the weight of betraying her husband heavy on her heart. Tears welled, mingling with the water, vanishing. Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself, This can’t happen again, and wrapped the half-towel over her chest, stepping out.
In the bedroom, Angith sat at the bed’s edge, eyes fixed on the floor, clearly wrestling with guilt. Vanitha glanced at him, found her black panties on the bed’s other side, and slipped them on, covering her chest with one hand. She handed the towel to Angith, speaking softly.
Vanitha: "No other towel, Angith. It’s time to leave."
Angith understood, took the towel, and went to the bathroom without a word. He returned naked, drying his hair with the small towel—his clothes neatly laid on the bed. Vanitha was in the next room, by the office desk’s mirror, applying light makeup—her maroon saree re-dbangd neatly, tucked above her navel, waist covered. Angith dressed and emerged; Vanitha checked the clock, urgency in her voice.
Vanitha: "Shall we go, Angith? It’s 6 PM, we’re late."
Angith nodded.
Angith: "Yeah, let’s go," he said quietly.
They hurried out, climbing into Vanitha’s car. She gripped the steering wheel, driving toward the airport. The first half of the journey passed in silence—breeze through the window offered slight comfort, but guilt lingered. Halfway, Angith broke the quiet.
Angith: "Sorry, Vanitha. Seeing you in that maroon saree, I couldn’t control myself. It felt like the first time I saw you—your smile, your beauty, your stunning body… it all came rushing back. I’m sorry for troubling you, for worrying you."
Vanitha felt the emotion in his voice. She drove silently for a moment, then replied with a deep breath.
Vanitha: "I slipped too, Angith. It’s my fault. I should’ve controlled myself, but somehow I couldn’t. Thinking of betraying my husband hurts so much. But what’s done is done. We’re not kids, we’re adults. Worrying won’t help. Let’s forget this and move forward. Let’s be loyal to our partners."
Their talk ended, a heavy silence returning. The car reached the airport. Angith stepped out, heart heavy.
Angith: "Let this be our last meeting, Vanitha. It’s best for both of us. Thanks for everything, and sorry. Bye."
Vanitha managed a dry smile.
Vanitha: "Bye, Angith."
They parted, hearts burdened. Vanitha turned the car, driving home. Reaching by 8 PM, she faced her mother-in-law, exhaustion in her voice.
Vanitha: "Amma, work was heavy, I’m so tired."
She slipped into a soft green nightie suit and collapsed onto the bed—tears rolled from her eyes, guilt overwhelming her. Closing them, she drifted into sleep, her mind restless.
At 10:30 PM, Vinith gently woke her, a plate of food in hand, sitting beside her.
Vinith: "Vanitha, eat something. Don’t sleep on an empty stomach."
Vanitha sat up, hugging him tightly—her eyes welled again. Vinith patted her back, soothing her.
Vinith: "I understand your work pressure, Vanitha. It’s just part of life. Let it go. I helped the kids with their lessons, and Amma fed them."
Vanitha looked at him, gratitude in her voice.
Vanitha: "Thank you so much, Vinith, for understanding."
Vinith smiled, standing.
Vinith: "Alright, I’ve got some work. Eat and sleep, I’ll be in the hall. Rest, get ready for your run tomorrow."
He left with a chuckle. Vanitha looked at the food, eating slowly—each bite deepened her guilt. In her mind, she vowed, I’ll never betray Vinith again, no matter the situation. Finishing, she set the plate on the table and sank back into bed—this time, her resolve firm, she slipped into sleep; the room’s soft light gently enveloped her.
