Nalini felt the weight of their gaze on her, but she met it without flinching. "No, I haven't," she said with conviction. "My husband is in Bangalore, and my children are with their grandparents in the village. I've had no other visitors."


Anbu nodded, scribbling on his clipboard. "And no one from outside your family has entered this house since the lockdown?"

Nalini's gaze remained steady. "No, no one," she reiterated, her voice clear. She had been vigilant, turning away even the most persistent of her friends who had offered help or companionship. Her home had become a fortress, and she had become its solitary sentinel.

Teja nodded, his eyes finally leaving her to scan the room once more. "Ma'am, it's very important that you maintain this isolation. The virus spreads quickly, and we're seeing cases rise every day." His voice was a sober reminder of the invisible enemy that lurked outside her walls.

Anbu cleared his throat, his gaze following the curve of her neck as it disappeared into the dupatta. "Ma'am, could you tell us where you purchase your vegetables from?" His question was innocent enough, but Nalini felt the tension in the room shift.

Nalini's eyes narrowed slightly as she replied, "From the local vendor, Uday. He's been coming around for years."

Teja's expression grew solemn. "Ma'am, we've noticed that many local vegetable vendors are getting infected. They travel to different areas and come in contact with many people. It's a high-risk job."

Nalini's eyes widened. "I see," she said, her voice tight. Uday was like family, a friendly face in a sea of masked strangers. "But he takes all precautions, I've seen him."


"Ma'am, it's not just about precautions," Teja said, his voice gentle but firm. "The virus is unpredictable. We've had cases where people who thought they were safe ended up being carriers."

Nalini's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?" she asked, her grip on the dupatta tightening.

Anbu's eyes remained on the clipboard, his pen poised in the air. "Ma'am, based on the information you've given us, and as a precaution, we need to conduct a basic health check and a temperature screening."

Nalini's grip on the dupatta tightened even further, her heart racing. The thought of being tested, of confirming the fears that had been lurking in the shadows of her mind, was almost too much to bear. But she knew it was necessary.

"Ma'am," Anbu said, his voice firm but not unkind, "We understand this might be uncomfortable, but it's for your safety and the safety of those around you."

Nalini felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. "But I'm not sick," she protested, her voice shaking. The thought of being taken away, of leaving her house, her sanctuary, filled her with a primal fear she hadn't felt since her children were born.
